My heart was in distresse but God delivered me
My heart was in distresse but God delivered me
Psalm 51:12–16 “Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; And uphold me with thy free spirit. Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; And sinners shall be converted unto thee. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: And my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness. O Lord, open thou my lips; And my mouth shall shew forth thy praise. For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: Thou delightest not in burnt offering.”
the psalmist moves a step beyond the immediate sinful situation and introduces restoration into the plea to God. In a beautifully alliterative cola in v. 8a, the psalmist seeks the sounds of joy and gladness (tašmîʿēnî śāśôn weśimḥâ). The psalmist continues, asking for rejoicing, a pure heart, a spirit of steadfastness, a spirit of holiness, the joy of deliverance, and a spirit of willingness in order to move past the present painful situation.

How many vows have we made
He brought me out of the miry clay
he set my feet on a rock to stay
he put a song in my heart
he rescued me
i was in a pit with my sins dragging me down
now i am free
