I want us to ask ourselves this questions: “Am I the same man at home as I am at church? Am I the same man at work as I am when I come to church? Am I the same man when I am hanging out with my buddies fishing, hunting, riding motorcycles - as I am at church?”
Introduction:
All of us as men have different. Some are strong, have a lion take charge attitude. Some are adventurous an love a challenge. Some are like myself can’t build nothing. You get the picture.
As we come to Psalm 1 the Psalmist describes two types of men Godly and Wicked. So as we look in the mirror of God’s Word of God asked the Holy Spirit to show us what kind of men we are in life in every relationship and in our daily walk.
Psalm 139:23–24 “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any
grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!”
The writer of Psalm 1 is unknown. Some think it could be David. Usually the writer is identified as David, Sons of Kora. Psalm 91 scholars is a Psalm of Moses. The bottom line it’s the Holy Spirit who is the writer.
The writer gives the characteristics of What a Godly man Looks like and he in contrast shows us what a Ungodly man / Wicked man looks like.
l. The Godly Man Vs 1 - 2
Psalm 1: 1-2 “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.”
The Psalmist starts vs 1 “Blessed is the Man”.
Psalm 1:1–2 (BW): The word “blessed” is asher, the name of one of Jacob’s sons (Gen. 30:12). It’s plural: “O the happinesses! O the blessednesses!” The person described here met the conditions and therefore God blessed him. If we want God’s blessing, we, too, must meet the conditions. “Be Worshipful Warren Wiersbe”
Psalm 1:1 (FSB): The Hebrew term used here, ashre, describes someone who is privileged or happy. Wisdom Literature commonly uses this expression to indicate someone who is fortunate or privileged.
Proverbs 3:13 “Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding,”
Proverbs 28:14 “Blessed is the one who fears the Lord always, but whoever hardens his heart will fall into calamity.”
A. First Characteristic of a Godly Man is He is a Man with Boundaries Base on the Word of God. the Psalmist makes reference to the Torah the Law of God Verse 2.
Psalm 1:1 (CCE Ps 1–50): Wisdom is as much about knowing when to say no as it is when to say yes. It is knowing when to walk away, when to swim against the tide, and when not to follow the crowd even when they laugh at you and call you a fool. This psalm teaches about three areas where we must learn to say no. Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary - Danny Akin
Notice the Pattern of how Compromising with sin
1. Walk - Counsel - Wick: Walk: term that suggest a passing by or casual movement along the way. Counsel in the Hebrew here means a hard firm direction. Men, Who we follow - walk with will slowly but surely shape our Conduct.
Following the advice of the wicked starts with simple association with people for whom the things of God matter little, if at all. Be careful where you go. Be wise about the people you listen to. Not all advice is good advice. Don’t walk in the counsel of the ungodly.
“O you naive or inexperienced [who are easily misled], understand prudence and seek astute common sense; And, O you [closed-minded, self-confident] fools, understand wisdom [seek the insight and self-discipline that leads to godly living].”
Proverbs 8:5 AMP
“You adulteresses [disloyal sinners—flirting with the world and breaking your vow to God]! Do you not know that being the world’s friend [that is, loving the things of the world] is being God’s enemy? So whoever chooses to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.”
James 4:4 AMP
2. Stand - Path - Sinners
Proverbs 4:14–15
14 Do not enter the path of the wicked,
and do not walk in the way of the evil.
15 Avoid it; do not go on it;
turn away from it and pass on
Psalm 1:1 (Be Worshipful) If you follow the wrong counsel, then you will stand with the wrong companions and finally sit with the wrong crowd. Warren Wiresbe
The phrase stand in the pathway conveys the idea of staying a while, stopping to look and listen, and hanging around or hanging out with. The word pathway describes a manner of life, the way one lives. “Sinners” are those who miss God’s mark. They are in the habit of standing on the opposite side from God. Instead of taking a stand for God, they take their stand with those who oppose him. Their way of life is more important than Christ’s way of life. Sin becomes their pattern, and sinners become their partners. Instead of wisely imitating Christ, the ultimate blessed man (1 Cor 11:1), they foolishly imitate sinners.
a. These one who Stands in the Path of Sinners is a person who do more than talk; they throw obstacles in the way of those who would follow God.
b. Here’s what happens when a person listens to the enemies of Faith in Christ. The person is spiritually dull and morally weak, Finding It increasingly difficult to make moral distinctions.
c. One who “Stands in the Path of Sinners” they develop spiritual neuropathy - sensitivity sin.
3. Sit - Seat - Scoffers: Once a Person becomes comfortable sitting with the unrighteousness the cancerous sin has reach Stage 4 Scoffers, Scorners - Mockers.
a. Psalm 1:1 (FSB):
scoffers This common Hebrew Wisdom Literature term, zed, describes an arrogant fool who refuses discipline and correction.
b. Notice the Progression one walks - flirting with sin. Then Stand - hangs out with sinners - keeps company with the wicked - Finally sits - becomes comfortable.
c. This type of person becomes a Cynic who sneer and scoff at truth. They are soured and make other lives miserable.
d. Not only do the things of God not matter, but we mock as fools those who think the things of God do matter. “Mockers” or “scoffers” describes the self-sufficient who pridefully say, “I don’t need God; I will live my life my way.”
Proverbs 3:33–35
33 The Lord’s curse is on the house of the wicked,
but he blesses the dwelling of the righteous.
34 Toward the scorners he is scornful,
but to the humble he gives favor.
35 The wise will inherit honor,
but fools get disgrace
Proverbs 15:12
12 A scoffer does not like to be reproved;
he will not go to the wise.
Proverbs 21:24
24 “Scoffer” is the name of the arrogant, haughty man
who acts with arrogant pride
