Introduction

The word “hypocrite” is an important one to understand. It comes from a Greek word meaning playacting, or a wearing a mask.
It’s basic definition includes the idea of pretending to be someone your’e not.
What are the consequences of being a hypocrite? Well, in most situations you’ll just be embarrassed when people find out the truth about you—that you’ve been trying to get people to think something different about you than what’s true.
but are there worse consequences for hypocrisy? Making people think your’e a police officer when you aren’t could get you a fine or jail time. Pretending you’ve paid your taxes when you haven’t could come with some bad consequences as well. But there are circumstances where hypocrisy leads to even worse consequences . . . even then those I just mentioned.
Namely, if you are found to be a hypocrite in terms of your standing before God, the consequences are everlasting—that is, eternal death. Eternal suffering in Hell.
And even more terrifying than that . . . there are many who don’t even realize that they are hypocrites before God.
There are many who are deceived that they are right before God. Maybe some of you here this morning. Maybe you’ve been told you were a Christian simply because you said a prayer once . . . but nothing ever changed in your life. Maybe you’ve been confused about what a Christian is in the first place, so you’ve always just assumed you were one.
So how do you know? You’ll want to pay close attention this morning as we look at a parable that Jesus taught about two sons—one was saved, one was a hypocrite . . . and you’ll want to be careful which one you condemn, because you might just condemn yourself in the process.
Jesus is going to reveal hypocrisy through a simple story. first, he’ll show you

The First Son

The Second Son

The Condemnation
