Intro

Ache/Tension:
Herod is coming to kill the child.
The Rage of Herod.
Matthew 2:13 NASB 2020
Now when they had gone, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the Child to kill Him.”
Matthew 2:14 CSB
So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night, and escaped to Egypt.
Matthew 2:15 CSB
He stayed there until Herod’s death, so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled: Out of Egypt I called my Son.
Matthew 2:16 (CSB)
Then Herod, when he realized that he had been outwitted by the wise men, flew into a rage. He gave orders to massacre all the boys in and around Bethlehem who were two years old and under, in keeping with the time he had learned from the wise men.
Exalting Jesus in Matthew Christmas Pleasure amidst Worldly Pain (Matthew 2:13–23)

It is estimated that the population of Bethlehem at that time was less than a thousand people, so there were likely somewhere between ten and twenty families that lost a son that day in a tragedy that surely shook the entire town to the core

Matthew 2:17 CSB
Then what was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled:
Matthew 2:18 (CSB)
A voice was heard in Ramah,
weeping, and great mourning,
Rachel weeping for her children;
and she refused to be consoled,
because they are no more.
What comes next is important
Jeremiah 31:16–17 CSB
This is what the Lord says: Keep your voice from weeping and your eyes from tears, for the reward for your work will come— this is the Lord’s declaration— and your children will return from the enemy’s land. There is hope for your future— this is the Lord’s declaration— and your children will return to their own territory.
Exalting Jesus in Matthew Three Reasons for Christmas Rejoicing (Matthew 2:13–23)

Matthew quotes from Jeremiah 31, the same chapter where we are promised that God will enter into a new covenant with us through Christ, so that all God’s people will know and love and worship God. Jesus brings hope in the midst of hurt and life in the midst of death.

Matthew 2:19 CSB
