Introduction

Have you ever been working outside and your clothes get super dirty, you have dirt from head to toe and you just feel disgusting? Thats the picture I think off when I think of Pauls analogy of the old man. I remember a few years ago I was helping out a friend do some plumbing and we were digging up the septic lines because they were full of roots causing problems for the home owner. It wouldn’t have been that bad except for the fact that it had rained a lot before we started but we had to get the job done. By the time we were done I was covered in mud from almost head to toe and my clothes were heavy from the rain and mud. I wanted nothing more than to go home and get those clothes off. This is how we should view the old man, we should want to get rid of it as quickly as possible.
Paul here is moving from the putting off to the putting on. We are to put off the old man and put on the new man.

What is the new man vs. 10

It is created in righteousness and holiness
Eph. 4:24 “And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.”
It changes the way we walk
Rom. 6:4 “Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”
It changes the way we think
Renewed in knowledge
Renewed- made knew again
Romans 12:2 “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
It changes our spirit
Rom. 8:9 “But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.”
When we put on the new man we start becoming more like the one who created us.
Rom. 8:29 “For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.”
Eph. 2:10 “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”
2 Cor. 4:4 “In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.”
We are renewed day by day
2 Cor. 4:16 “For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.”

Who is the new man?

The jews divided the world into two primary groups.
Jew/Gentile
Paul is reminding them that Christ has abolished all prejudices that were brought out in almost every aspect of life.
When we are in Christ we are no longer
Greek/jew
circumcision/Uncircumcision
Barbarian - uncivilized people
Scythian - regarded as the lowest of lows
Bond/free
We are all one with Christ, and God has used men and women of all different backgrounds and cultures to further his kingdom
God isn't always looking for ability, but rather availability
God can use anybody, are you available?

What we should put on

we become the elect of God when we get saved
By that we become holy and beloved
We are to put on Bowels of mercy
Bowels of Mercy means to be deeply merciful
Put on Kindness
Good will; benevolence
As Christians we should be kind people.
Eph. 4:32 “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”
Put on Humbleness of mind
As Christians we should be humble
The Bible tells us not to think of ourselves more highly than we ought
Pride always precedes destruction.
Put on meekness
Meekness doesn't equal weakness
Meekness is power under control
Jesus was known as meek and lowly in heart
Matt. 11:29 “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.”
Moses was known as the meekest man on earth
Numbers 12:3 “(Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.)”
We should be meek
We should put on longsuffering
This one is tough because a lot of us have a short fuse when it comes to people doing the wrong thing.
It becomes easier the more we become like Christ.
When we see how longsuffering God is towards us it should make us more longsuffering we become towards others
The word longsuffering means patient, not easily provoked.
We should forebear each other
Meaning we should be patient with one another
We should forgive one another
Eph. 4:32 “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”
When we think about the forgiveness God showed us through His som Jesus Christ, we should be some of the most forgiving people there is.
If any man has a quarrel or complaint against anyone, forgive them, like Christ has forgiven you
Put on Charity
Charity is the highest form of love because it is love without expectation.
God loves us knowing that we will fail and yet he still loves us \
Eph. 5:2 “And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.”
The Bible tells us that Charity is the bond of perfectness
Bond- Cause of union; cement which unites; link of connection; as the bonds of affection.
Perfectness - The highest degree of goodness or holiness of which man is capable in this life.

What putting on the new man gives

The Peace of God
Phil. 4:7 “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
The peace of God, is perfect peace therefore when we allow it to rule in our hearts we have unity with Christ.
Because of that we should be thankful for the peace that we have in Christ
He gives us hope When hope is gone He gives us strength When we can't go on He gives us shelter In the storms of life When there's no peace on Earth There is peace in Christ
The Word of God
It dwells in you
It gives you wisdom
The Bible gives you wisdom in every aspect of life
we should teach the Bible
We should admonish (To counsel against wrong practices; to caution or advise) with the Bible.
We should admonish through our music vs. 16
It should change the way you live vs. 17
Everything we do should be done in the name of Jesus
Its much harder to sin when you do things in the name of the Lord Jesus

Conclusion

Have you embraced the new man?
Are you living like Jesus more every day?
