Luke 6: 1 And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands. 2 And certain of the Pharisees said unto them, Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days? 3 And Jesus answering them said Have ye not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was an hungred, and they which were with him; 4 How he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the shewbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone? 5 And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

1. God gave Israel the Sabbath law at Sinai ( Neh. 9:13-14).
2. God made it a sign between Him and the Nation ( Ex. 20:8-11;31:12-17). The word Sabbath in the verse 1 in the Greek vernacular is the word Sabbaton Shabbath in the original writing and it means or day of weekly repose from secular avocations (also the observance or institution itself ) In other words that ought to be the day that you set aside from any extensive word and dedicate to worshipping God. Because Sabbath means to Rest Look at Genesis 2:2-3. God doesn’t need to rest but we do> Just remember that Jesus is not operating in New Testament conditions. The New Testament doesn’t really happen until after Jesus die rise from the grave ascends to the right hand of the Father and the disciples spread the Message of the Messiah.

2. The contrast is that the Lord’s Day is a reminder of our Lord’s finished work in “the new Creation” (2 Cor. 5:21; Eph. 2:10; 4:24). The Lord’s Day speaks of rest before work and relates to grace. The Lord’s Day commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead as well as the coming of the Holy Spirit and the “birthday” of the church (Acts 2).

OMIT There’s a big difference and the reason you have to explain and make it clear and expound and exegete the facts are because To call Resurrection Sunday “the Sabbath day” is to confuse the first day and the seventh day and what each signifies. Each day is important. To the Orthodox ed Jews they still believe in the Sabbath day worship. But to the Orthodox ed Christian we believe in Sunday 1st Day of the week worship.

Common sense,The disciples were hungry, so they picked the heads of wheat, rubbed them in their hands, and ate them. But nah in so doing, according to the rabbis, they broke the Sabbath law, because they were harvesting, winnowing, and preparing food! yes indeed. They were supposed to do that but the problem with the Pharisees and the scribes was that they had turned the Sabbath Day into a burden instead of the blessing God as it was originally meant it to be.

And so here they come look at verses 2-6 And certain of the Pharisees said unto them, Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days? 3 And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was an hungred, and they which were with him; 4 How he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the shewbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone? 5 And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

In other words Jesus is saying you pharisees and scribes are stuck in the traditions of men rather than the New Sabbath oracles of God. Jesus was saying ya’ll didn’t say King David was wrong because everybody knew that David was God’s anointed king. David ate the fresh 12 loaves of shew bread and you’ll aren’t condemning what David did. It sounds hypocritical and that it was a lot for them to take. The Pharisees had set up 638 specified extra laws that actually hurt the people rather than helped the people. And Jesus had to tell them wait When David was running from Saul and His 600 mighty men had no food they went to the house of the Lord and ate the shew bread that only the clergy only the priest could eat. And Jesus is saying in essence here you are, ragging on my little disciples about them eating a handful of wheat out of a field because they are hungry.. In modern times we’d say Come on Man. It’s a new day dawning . Jesus is saying A New Sabbath coming.

“ That Sab Ba ton” experience Look at 6 And it came to pass also on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man whose right hand was withered. 7 And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day; that they might find an accusation against him. 8 But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth. 9 Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it? 10 And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other. 11 And they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus.

Brothers and sisters we should never have such a slavish devotion to religious rules that blind us from true ministry and keep us from the very presence of the Lord who gave them the Law in the first place. The last part of verse 11 says that they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus. They didn’t want to celebrate the miracle of the healing. That a true Restoration had occurred.

B). A New Nation and it starts off with Prayer. Look at verses 12 And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. The bible says Men ought to always pray and then sleep on it and Psalms 16:7 says that God will direct you even in your night seasons. Sometimes I am informed about things that I can’t do anything about but that I’m no left in the dark about either. Jesus prayed all the night.Much Prayer much Power Little prayer little Power, no prayer no power. The strength of a Christian warrior is his/her ability to offer up prayer to our God. prayer is the direct communication that a parishioner have with their God. All before you would have to ask the priest to pray for you but when Jesus was dying on the cross and the veil of the temple split from top to bottom NOW we have access to the True and Living God without a man made intercessor. Now we a Mediator between God and man in the Personality of Jesus the Christ. The Only Begotten of the Father.

There have been times in my life that I didn’t know which way to go but I prayed to God and the answer came. let me teach you something when life gives you something that beyond your abilities, expertise, experience comfort zone,or your tolerance turn it over to God.

And so, Jesus prayed for strength as He faced the path ahead. Then also, Jesus wanted the Father’s guidance as He selected His 12 Apostles, Because the future of the church rested with them. And and and Keep in mind that one of the Twelve would betray Him, and Jesus knew who he was from the beginning (John 6:64). Our Lord had real human emotions (Luke 22:41–44; Heb. 5:7–8), and it was through prayer that He made this difficult choice.

So let’s see who Jesus chose . Look at verses 13-16 And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles; 14 Simon, (whom he also named Peter,) and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew, 15 Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zelotes, 16 And Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, which also was the traitor. Jesus had many disciples but only 12 apostles.

And speaking of order the question here is Why did Jesus choose 12 Apostles? The answer is For the 12 tribes of Israel, and and and Jesus was forming the nucleus for a new nation (see *1 Peter 2:9). The first Christians were Jews because the Gospel came “to the Jew first” ( Rom. 1:16). Later, the Gentiles were added to the church through the witness of the scattered Jewish believers. (They are called the diaspora). And brothers and sisters the ministry of Paul, for the record was the ministry to the Gentiles. The Apostle Paul made it abundantly clear that In Jesus’ church, there is no difference between Jew and Gentile; we are “all one in Christ Jesus” (Gal. 3:28).

Look at verse 17 And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases; 18 And they that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed. 19 And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.

It is significant that after Jesus called His 12 Apostles, and before He preached this great sermon, He took time to heal many needy people. This was a demonstration of both Jesus’ power and Jesus’ compassion. It had to be apart of Jesus MO because everywhere He went He did the same thing. It was also a reminder to His newly appointed assistants that their job was to share His love and power with a needy world. That’s why job shadowing is important. You’ve got to learn how to be in the position that God appoints you to. And so after demonstrating the job description Jesus began wit the last part of our lesson

Look at verses 20-39 And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said,Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God. Wait before we go too far on each Beatus or Beatitude let’s see what the word Blessed is in this context . Bless in the Greek vernacular is the Eulogeo meaning like a eulogy to speak well of. it means to pronounce a benediction upon a person for them to prosper. And so when we read it again we know that Jesus is pronouncing blessings upon us even in 2023.

31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.
I want us to notice that in order for Jesus to get the disciples ready for a New Sabbath, a New Nation and a New Blessing He had to teach them a New Spiritual way. We can’t get better going by the old way. If the disciples had followed the old way then the new testament church wouldn’t have been capable of becoming the Bride of Christ.

32 For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them. 33 And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same. 34 And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again.
35 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.
35 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.
36 Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.
36 Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.
37 Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:
37 Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:
38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

39 And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch? 40 The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master. 41 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye? 42 Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother’s eye.

43 For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 44 For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes. 45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? 47 Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: 48 He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. 49 But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.
