According to the Greek Concordance: That word dead, in Greek is Nekrous meaning: dead or no longer living, Figuratively, it can mean "unable, ineffective, dead, powerless"
Meaning that there was nothing you could do about your sin, you were unable, ineffective, and powerless.

Also known as Prince of darkness, the ruler of this earth, the deceiver, the tempter, the evil one, Satan himself.
There are two sides in this world: Good and Evil, you're on one of those sides. If you don’t live for God, then you live for satan!

You're like the rest of mankind/everyone else.
We have broken God’s law/his commandments
Because of that we are headed to a place of punishment called hell.

From Genesis to Ephesians this phrase has been used to exclaim the power of God.
