The Key to Overcoming Shame and Guilt

So the difference between shame and guilt:
Shame: I like value because of who I am or what I did Guilt: I did something bad
You don’t necessarily need to be guilty to feel shame and people don’t need to be ashamed to know they are guilty, but overcoming both guilt and shame has the same formula. Although we are going to focus mostly on shame you can apply everything here to guilt.
The Root of Shame is and entertained internal dialog in your head.
Shame is a powerful emotion that can cause people to feel defective, unacceptable, beyond repair, and unlovable and can translate to a jaded view of how God views us as well.
Main root of shame is Treating feelings like they are facts.
This is going to be our flagship scripture throughout this series. We will repeat it often and I encourage you to memorize it.
Romans 8:1 ESV
1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Then the verses go into how we are condemned in the law. In other words In Adam. In sin. When we stand apart from God and his law. When we aren’t continually obedient to Christ we find condemnation. We, in our flesh wreak of condemnation, shame, and guilt. But God says we are a new Creation. When we accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior we are a new creation in Christ Jesus. The Law cannot condemn you. It cannot claim you. It cannot control you. You are set free because who the Son set free is free indeed.
In order to overcome shame you first must separate yourself from who you were to the new creation you have become.
You are not your actions.
God Names You
There are attributes about yourself that you cannot change because it is the foundation of who God made you. You can’t change the personality, calling, and person God made you, but you can change your actions to better suite the Word of God.
3 things you need to understand:
1. You are loved: John 3:16
John 3:16 ESV
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
2. You are Chosen Eph 1:4
Ephesians 1:4 ESV
4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love
3. You are Set apart for great things Deut 14:2
Deuteronomy 14:2 ESV
2 For you are a people holy to the Lord your God, and the Lord has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.
The bible tells us that the things we hide need to be brought into the light(Luke 8:17). This is scary. Many Pastors use this verse to state that we will be found out. That our sins will be brought out in front of other people. There is some truth to that. There are times the bible tells us to confess our sins to one another so that we may find freedom (James 5:16).
But Luke 8:17
Luke 8:17 ESV
17 For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light.
I asked myself why would Jesus repeat himself. Because the Greek word Phaneros which is the term for light means to be made manifest or visible. Then I remembered that Jesus called himself the Light of the Wold in John 8:12.
The Greek word Jesus uses here is phose
Phos-The source of light Phaneros means manifest/visibility.
Your sin is brought into the visibility of Jesus and Jesus who knows everything calls you loved, chosen, and set apart.
So the first thing you have to do is separate who you convinced yourself that you are from who god called you to be.
2. The Promise
Zephaniah 3:19 (ESV)
19 ...I will change their shame into praise and renown in all the earth.
Here God is talking about restoring Israel. Israel was in rebellion and turned into a shame filled nation through their own actions. Zephaniah told Israel that when they turn back to the law of God and followed Him that God would remove the shame they heaped on themselves and turn it into praise and renown. god used Zephaniah to prophesy not only Israel’s judgement and penalty, but also their restoration and rescue. We see this in several places in the bible
Women at the well (John 4) who later preached to her town and many where saved
David when he fell to lust and murder and then was restored back to king (2 Samuel) who led well and became known as a man after God’s own heart.
Women with the issue of blood (Luke 8) who touched Jesus in secret she was so ashamed, but then sparked revival
Man possessed with legion (Matthew 5) who later took a town who told Jesus to leave and primed them for one of the biggest revivals after the death of Jesus.
3. The Path of Freedom
2 Corinthians 12:9–10 ESV
9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
Realize: The place where Satan wants to shame you is the place where God wants to elevate you
Revelation 12:11 ESV
11 And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death.
You conquer Satan by the blood of Christ, but your Testimony will be your weapon in setting other people free. Take what Satan tried to beat you with and use it to set captives free. I’ve noticed in my life that, if I am open, God will bring people to me that need to hear my story of freedom because they need to be shown that path.
