Teaching on Psalm 62

Father we now call upon you to be with us and be in our presence.
And illuminate our minds by your Spirit and Word.
We thank you Father in all things in Christ name Amen.

Lets rise to Sing Psalm Psalm 62B

62 To the choirmaster: according to Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.

1  For God alone my soul waits in silence;

from him comes my salvation.

2  He alone is my rock and my salvation,

my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.

3  How long will all of you attack a man

to batter him,

like a leaning wall, a tottering fence?

4  They only plan to thrust him down from his high position.

They take pleasure in falsehood.

They bless with their mouths,

but inwardly they curse. Selah

5  For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,

for my hope is from him.

6  He only is my rock and my salvation,

my fortress; I shall not be shaken.

7  On God rests my salvation and my glory;

my mighty rock, my refuge is God.

8  Trust in him at all times, O people;

pour out your heart before him;

God is a refuge for us. Selah

9  Those of low estate are but a breath;

those of high estate are a delusion;

in the balances they go up;

they are together lighter than a breath.

10  Put no trust in extortion;

set no vain hopes on robbery;

if riches increase, set not your heart on them.

11  Once God has spoken;

twice have I heard this:

that power belongs to God,

12  and that to you, O Lord, belongs steadfast love.

For you will render to a man

according to his work.

Verse one in the Hebrew tells us that this is a Psalm of David with possible edits made by Jeduthun who was the leader of a choir of the temple:

62 To the choirmaster: according to Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.

So where does the your source of your well-being lie?
In what or in whom do you place your trust to get you out of hard times?
or keep you safe when all is well?
From where do you derive your own sense of dignity?
What provides you with a sense of security in life?
For many, the answer to these questions lies in money and power.
In which Psalm 62 is instructing us not to put our ultimate trust in these things
Rather we are to put our Hope in God Alone.
For the security of our families
for the work that we do to provide for them.
For the means to pay our bills.
For where we will live our lives on this earth.
And ultimately when we die our Hope can only be in Christ alone and his finished work.
If we are truly his and resting in him.
Psalm 62 points us to this different answer.
The heart of the answer is found at the center of the psalm (62:7): On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God.
This central line is preceded and followed by two eight-line stanzas in the Hebrew (62:1–6, 8–12;
The first stanza expresses quiet confidence in God in the face of adversaries in verses 1-6
And the second encourages confidence in God, not in wealth or power in verses. 8-12
We know that David is the author according to Verse 1

We see David had Quiet Confidence in the Face of Adversity (62:1–6).

“I wait quietly before God,” said David.
To wait quietly is one thing when all is going good in your life.
But David waited quietly though there was a storm all around him.
David was surrounded by enemies bent on his demise.
These enemies were not foreigners only
Some were his own family members because of the sin he had commited.
The adultery with Bathsheba
And the murdering of her husband Uriah the Hittite.
And so David not only is paying for his spiritual adultery but that of his children's as well.
His own son planed a coup
They blessed David with their words,
I think of Saul in this verse possibly in Davids past.
Saul blessed David with his words but tried to Kill him on many occasions.
They took pleasure in lying about him as part of the plan to topple him from his position.
We see the quietness that David is talking about in two different verses that are almost identical
Verses 1&2 through 5&6

1  For God alone my soul waits in silence;

from him comes my salvation.

2  He alone is my rock and my salvation,

my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.

5  For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,

for my hope is from him.

6  He only is my rock and my salvation,

my fortress; I shall not be shaken.

So what are the idols that Psalm 62 speaks of?

IDOLS IN WEALTH

The idol of misplaced trust is often hard to detect.
Sometimes we think we are trusting God to supply our needs until we are faced with the possibility of losing our job.
The anxiety we then experience indicates the presence of a hidden idol,
misplaced trust in our job as the source of our security.
We think we are depending on God’s approval for our sense of personal well-being,
until we come under severe criticism by others.
The pain we then feel indicates the presence of an idol,
misplaced dependence on the opinions of others as the source of our sense of self-worth.
Such painful experiences are in reality a true blessing,
as they give us the opportunity to rid our lives of idols and to grow in dependence on God alone for life.
So we can relate with David in his struggles when he walked this earth today.
So where does David point us to?
He points us too ...

WHERE ARE HOPE SHOULD BE IN GOD

From this psalm we learn the importance of taking the time to be quiet before God when there is turmoil in our lives.
Our temptation is to move into high gear to stay ahead of the storm.
While there is a time and place for action,
our activity is often a form of self-reliance.
So our Lives around us our as hectic as our internal space is
Our internal space being our spiritual self our soul.
Quieting our souls before God and centering on him as the source of our well-being
will produce the state of heart and mind needed to take action when appropriate.
Next lets look at vs 8-12

Trust in God, Not in Wealth or Power (62:8–12).

Wealth and power are two particularly suductive idols that all men and women can struggle with.
Acquiring treasures on this earth.
Homes Clothing, vehicles, large bank acounts.
All these things can be good things used for our good and Gods Glory.
But we can’t let them replace God in our lives.
So David instructed those around him not to trust in extortion or robbery, both of which are an exertion of power over others to increase one’s wealth. (Socialism).
So not only the accumulation of things but the unlawful accumulation of wealth by theft.
Have you heard of reparations that people in our society want others to make for things done to their ancestors.
Punishing people for something they haven’t done is wicked.
And stealing from other is only throwing fuel on the fire.
And it is the sin David is speaking about.
David says to not make wealth the center of their lives
Even if our wealth increase for any reason.
Paul’s teaches this in the New Testament in 1 Tim 6:17–19 “As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.”
Giving of your abundance rather than taking by force.
Instead, people should put their trust in God at all times—
when times are good as well as when times are not.
David taught that when times are tough, one way we put our trust in God is by pouring out our hearts to him.
We can honestly tell God all that we are thinking and feeling.
We can be completely vulnerable in his presence, because he is our refuge, our place of safety, protection, and security.
Faith comes from listening to God’s word according to (Rom 10:17 “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”
So David reminded himself and others that God has spoken.
God has not only the power to protect us
But also he gives his love to all those who rest in his finished work
All those who are his elect before the foundation of the world.
So we should replace our dependence on our own power and our own might
And rather depend on God’s power.
God’s power is exercised in keeping his covenant with us because he has unfailing love.
So when we from time to time get caught up in the turmoil of life,
Becasue we will.
We should rather quiet our souls before God
trusting that his power is at work in us to
accomplish his loving purposes for us.

Lets pray

Father in heaven we thank you for your word
and how it instructs our steps
and how we are to think and act in this world.
Help us to Rest in your promises throughout the rest of the coming week
and our lives on this earth
until we meet you in the new heavens and the new earth.
In Christ Name
Amen.

LET US PRAY

Grant, Almighty God, that since you daily exhort us,
and though you see us often turning aside from the the right path,
You are kind Father because you do not cease to stretch forth your hand to us,
and you also continue to wake us up us by many reproofs,
that we may repent—
Father grant that we may not be permitted
to reject your Word with perverseness;
But rule us by your Spirit,
That we may meekly and obediently submit to you,
Help us to be teachable, so that if we have not been willing to submit to your correction,
That we may not continue in our sins.
Father help us to heed your spirits correction.
Heal our diseases so that we may truly repent,
Help us to be so wholly given to obey you,
as never to attempt anything beyond the rule of your Word,
and help us to heed the wisdom which you have revealed to us,
not only by Moses and your prophets,
but also by your only begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.
Father we ask for all these things in the powerful, glorious, majestic, and wonderful name of Jesus Christ.
Are only hope for Salvation in this lost and dying world.
