1 John 2:1–2 (NIV)
My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
Kid’s section
Jesus does so much for us in our lives. So Jesus comes down from heaven and He has a very important job to do. Does anyone know what His job was?
That’s right He came to take away our sins. But not just our sins but everyone’s sin in the whole world. So anyone that believes in Jesus has their sins washed clean.
Now who knows what sin is? That is when we do something that God doesn’t like. So Jesus is the one that takes all the sin away in our lives.
Now who is Jesus’ Father? That’s right it is God. So Jesus tells the Father that we believe in Him and that we want to be followers of His son. When that happens, when we believe in Jesus and we are baptized in His name, we belong to the family of God. How great is that? We become brothers and sisters with Jesus

Luke 7:36–50 (NIV)
When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume. As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.
When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.”
Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.”
“Tell me, teacher,” he said.
“Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?”
Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.”
“You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.
Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.”
Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”
The other guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”
Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
Introduction:
Who is this who even forgives sins? This question from the guests at this dinner is the question that is continued to be asked to this day. Is Jesus just a good teacher? was he just a prophet? was he crazy? We know the truth, we know Jesus is the Messiah
These verses show us the central paradox of who Jesus is and what it means to have faith. We are going to explore these verses deeper and look at these three lessons
1. A place of humility
2. Dangers of complacency
3. Your faith has saved you
The unnamed women gives us one of the most beautiful acts in the entire Biblical record. It also gives us one that we should look toward as an example for how we need to approach Jesus.
So to set the scene again, we have Jesus who is going to the home of Simon who is a a Pharisee. Now this woman who we know is a sinner learns that Jesus will be at this house. To go a step further Jesus and Simon are not the only ones at this dinner. Now I want you to think about how much courage it takes for this woman to go to Jesus in this manner. This woman wasn’t just not invited to this dinner party. She wasn’t welcomed at this dinner party. This woman and this sinner would never be invited to this house and yet here she is.
Luke 7:38 (NIV)
As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.
With great humility this woman comes to the feet of Jesus. Here is the amazing part of this interaction. She gives everything to Jesus and what she has is not much. She has her tears and some perfume. Yet it is more than enough for Jesus because this woman is excatly who He came for. We learn from her how we need to come to Jesus.
First we need to understand that we are sinners. This is the central position of us as humans, that we have sin inside of us. We are in need of a Savior. We are in need of God in our lives. When we can see that we have this need then we can approach Jesus in a humble way. We must push past all societal pressures, all outside worldly pressures to come to Jesus.
This woman moved past all of that. She did not care what these people thought of her. She didn’t care where she had to go to see Jesus. She knew that she needed Jesus. We need this same attitude. We need to push past everything around us in the world that wants to separte us from Jesus and move towards the feet of Jesus.
It is a total commitment to Jesus that we need to make in our lives.
Now there is also a flip side to religion. Let us look at the Pharisee and what Jesus says:
Luke 7:44–47 (NIV)
Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.”
We have to understand the cultural norms of the day. What Jesus is saying to Simon are normal things that you would do when somone comes to your house in that time period. You would greet them with a kiss. Both Jesus and Simon being Jewish you would put some oil on their someone’s head to annoint them and finally there would be water to clean your feet because of the dust and dirt. These are all cultural norms, like shaking someone’s hand in today’s world. Simon failed to do the basic things for Jesus. Here is the Son of God, the Messiah and Simon takes Him for granted.
This is what we must guard our hearts against. We can look at Simon and think to ourselves we wouldn’t treat Jesus in this manner but the truth is we can easily become Simon when we are not in a humble position before Jesus. When we do not remind ourselves that He is the Messiah. That He has done the work that is needed to repair gap between us and God. Because of Simon’s religious devotion as a Pharisee , he doesn’t believe he needs a savior.
Jesus says “ Whoever has been forgiven little loves little.” The truth of the matter is that we have all been forgiven of a lot. We have sinned, and Jesus went to the cross for every sin, so we have all been forgiven of a lot. Simon’s mistake is that he judges the woman and he compares himself to the woman.
Luke 7:39 (NIV)
When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.”
She is a sinner he says. But not Simon, he doesn’t see that. In his own hubris he misses this amazing moment and he misses that he should be doing the same thing.
The other guests in attendance have the same issue
Luke 7:49 (NIV)
The other guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”
Who is this that forgives sins? They have the same issue as Simon. They do not realize, oh wow I need to be forgiven. They miss the fact that the Son of God is here in their midst. The woman knows who He is, and yet instead of understanding the situation, they question it.
Go to Jesus, He forgives and keep going to Him. Make Jesus a priority in your life and guard your heart against complancey in your relationship with Jesus.
Finally as Jesus says often
Luke 7:50 (NIV)
Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
We must put our faith in Jesus, this is the requirement that He asks of us. Our faith that we know He is the messiah and this faith is what provides our peace in our lives.
Hebrews 11:1–3 (NIV)
Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for.
By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.
We look at these very famous verses on faith. It is by faith that we can look at the world and have a different understanding. It is by faith that we can understand that God is soverign over the world. That in itself gives me great peace.
It is by faith that we can know we are forgiven. It is not the work of anything that we can do but have that faith in Jesus.
Conclusion
Conclusion
The woman in these verses that we went over needs to be admired. We should look to her as an example of the type of faith we need to have. She knew who Jesus was, without any doubt in her mind.
Jesus is our Lord and Savior. Jesus is our Messiah. Jesus is our mediator and our High priest. Simply put Jesus is our everything. Without Jesus we are lost. We look out into the world and see how people are lost. We can have peace and that peace comes from having a humble attitude and turning our attention to the Lord Jesus Christ.
