Opening sermon for first section of 1 Peter
Opening sermon for first section of 1 Peter
In my personal outline, i have split this in to 2 sections. The first one is Gospel Matters and the second is Obedience and Holiness.
ESV lumps it all together in a statement that says called to salvation as exiles. That is a good overarching title because salvation means so much more than just Jesus died on the cross or even that we go to Heaven as the reward for Jesus’ death.
Look at 1 Peter 1:3
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
Peter steps up to bat and hits a home run on the first pitch.
He starts out saying blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
(may not use in sermon)
Why would Peter declare that God is blessed?
Commentary says that Peter used a similar salutation as Paul, but he also uses a similar blessing as Paul uses. (Michaels p1)
These two match it almost word for word.
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort,
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,
Ephesians and 1 Peter’s blessings start with worship of who God is, then go to what he has done for the those worshipping him.
That makes for an interesting conversation about what our worship should look like, i think. I probably wont get in to this in the sermon. BUT MAYBE
Could also show a list of old testament references that use Blessed be God to show just how significant this idea is to adore and worship God.
(May not use above in sermon)
So the discussion of worship continues...
Blessed - Gk 2128 - eulogetos - adorable and blessed - actually comes from 2127
blessed - Gk 2127 - eulogeo - to speak well of, to thank or invoke a benediction upon, to pronounce prosperity on - (ie to brag on someone)
So Peter is saying, hey look at my God. I just want to brag on Him and bring him praise. Worship him!
I also notice that he specifically aims at the Father.
During the introduction, he breaks down the trinity, but here he puts all his worship and adoration at the father!
Then he spends time breaking down what God has done for us.
He makes worship very personal for the believer that is reading this text.
So Then Peter begins with worship
But what does worship have to do with all this stuff we are going to look at?
Let me make a statement - true or false
Everyone worships something.
(listen to answers)
Ok
True or False
Your hope is only as strong as that thing which you worship (the object of our worship)
(listen to answers and dialogue)
We have to be careful what we adore, because we spend time with what we adore (bless) and if its something that cannot produce hope for us, then its not worthy of our worship.
This should change the way we enter into sports, into friendships, into relationships, maybe even into a medical doctor or counselor.
Thats why Peter starts out worshipping God!!!
Because his hope is in that GOD!!!
So lets do some ground work and lay some foundation for the next few weeks.
On your outline, the first section is Called to salvation as exiles
What does CALLED TO SALVATION AS EXILES mean?
(Get a response to what that means)
We see this broken down in two parts:
Gospel Matters (1:3-12)
Obedience/Holiness (1:13-2:12)
Tonight I want to just lay out the first part- Gospel Matters - because it will be later in the fall before we get to the obedience/holiness part.
Some foundation:
-Understand that we have a Living hope that is NOT OF THIS WORLD (1:3-9)
We do not worship a God of this world
We are not saved by a salvation that lives in this world or hangs in the balance of the outcome of this world
Global warming or any other catastrophic event doesnt effect our salvation
Our inheritance isnt here in this world
Because of this, our hope doesnt live and die by the things of this world
-Theres only one story in the bible from beginning to end. In addition, there’s a dependency on all God’s people (1:10-12)
Salvation is found in Christ alone!
The Old Testament writers wrote for their own time, but also for these people in NT times.
The OT prophets wrote so the New Testament writers could understand
The NT writers write so we can understand.
We share the gospel for others to understand.
The work is not complete.
We see this in Hebrews as the saints cheer us on to finish the work!
1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
-Your salvation comes in stages. (1:4-6, 9, 13)
Im calling this past, present, and future grace.
Past Grace-justification
Present Grace-justification and sanctification
Future Grace-glorification
