A common theme that we have been discussing in the past few weeks is the purpose of the Bible. Specifically the purpose of the old testament.
Does anyone remember what the purpose of the old testament is? (To show that we are sinners)
We see countless times people in the old testament running from God and doing terrible things. In just the first few chapters of the Bible God makes this beautiful garden with many plants and animals and God gives Adam and Eve one commandment and they broke it and messed it all up. And after that there’s story after story of these people who God is using to do awesome things, but they always screw it up in the end.
I wanna read for y’all real quick out of Matthew 5.
Matthew 5:14 NLT
14 “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.
That’s a high standard to live up to. I mean just think about it. Jesus said in that verse that this world is a dark place and the only light in this world… is us. And from everything that happened prior to the life of Jesus it’s clear that man is just the worst. So how can we be the light of the world if we are all dark people ourselves. Well that brings us to our scripture tonight.
Turn in your Bibles to 1 John 1 verse 5.
1 John 1:5–7 NLT
5 This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all. 6 So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth. 7 But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.
