Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
What does it mean to work out your own salvation?
For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
Verse 12 is not dealing with us working to earn our salvation… Because if we compare spiritual things with spiritual we know that salvation is not of works.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
What verse 12 telling us is that we are to work “out” what God has worked “in”.
When you got saved how many of you recieved a shiny light on the top of your head letting everyone know that you had recieved Christ as your Saviour?
So in a sense your salvation is a secret… Right?
But is it God’s plan for it to remain in secret?
No...
Now, with that being said, God is not looking for us to put on a front. He wants us to be genuine and real. For those of us that have godly friends, they are not the measure, and in fact that Bible tells us not to look at others. God is the measure, meaning that we measure vertically instead of horizontally. Working out our salvation occurs through us drawing near to God, Him growing us, and working out what He has worked in!
