The Holy Spirit gives me the ability to have Joy in the midst of hardship or unhappiness In the book of John. Chapter 13-16 reveals Jesus preparing his disciples for His departure.
He tells them twice in chapter 14
“Let not your hearts be troubled”
John 14:1 ESV

John 14:30–31 ESV
I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me, but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.
Satan is also called the "prince of the power of the air" in Ephesians 2:2. He is the "ruler of this world" in John 12:31.
In other words he is the ruler of domain of darkness
But… “He has no claim on me”
Throughout these three chapters we see Jesus using a certain phrase…
“I have said these things to you”
John 14:25–26 ESV
“These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
John 15:11 ESV
These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.
John 15:17 ESV
These things I command you, so that you will love one another.
John 16:1 ESV
“I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away.
He spoke to accomplish a certain purpose…
Jesus was teaching His disciples about:
Abiding in Him
Keeping His commandments
Preparing them for persecution
Preparing them for the Helper “The Holy Spirit”
Jesus wanted them to have:
Joy
To love one another
to keep them from falling
Jesus told them…
John 16:20 ESV
Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy.
John 16:21 ESV
When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world.
John 16:22 ESV
So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.
Jesus declared....
John 16:32 ESV
Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me.
He’s prepare them…

Protevangelium -
Genesis 3:15 ESV
I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
