“Discipleship”

welcome
I am pastor Joseph
Finishing up Luke 9 today, talk about taking a break after this to dive into a short series for the month of September, we will jump right back into Luke 10
Recap and Discuss Luke 9 thus far
Today we are in Luke 9:51-62, Lets Jump right in…
Luke 9:51–62 ESV
When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. And he sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village of the Samaritans, to make preparations for him. But the people did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” But he turned and rebuked them. And they went on to another village. As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” And Jesus said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead. But as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” Yet another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”
Lets pray
Todays message is called “walk it out”, because we can not just talk the talk we must also walk the walk as disciples
Putting Jesus First in everything, talk on this...
Now lets look at some context first
Once again when we look at Luke 9 it is a pivotal chapter in the journey of the messiah
The previous section of Luke chapters 4:4-9:50 was Jesus authenticating himself as messiah in his Galilean Ministry
performing messianic miracles
Jesus already revealed himself to the 12
in this next section Luke chapters 9:50-11:54, authentication was no longer the issue, now the issue was acceptance.
in Luke 9:50-11:54 Jesus will teach his disciples about rejection and how to live in the face of opposition
This rejection will come to a climax when in Luke 11:14-54 Jesus is accused of having demonic power
we will go deeper into this in chapter 11
There is a journey we are seeing Jesus go through
and as stated chapter 9 is an important part because its here in Luke 9.51 Jesus begins his journey back to Jerusalem
Luke 9:51 ESV
When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem.
Jesus set his face to Jerusalem
This is important, Jesus had travled to jerusalem many times, however, this time the journey would be to his death and ultimalty to his victory
so Jesus set out, from this point forward we now know he is journeying back, keep that in mind
its also a great example for us believers in christ and how we should live
Although Jesus knew he would face persecution and death in Jerusalem, he was determined to go there.
When God gives you a course of action, move steadily toward your destination, no matter what potential hazards await.
Lets read on
Luke 9:52–56 ESV
And he sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village of the Samaritans, to make preparations for him. But the people did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” But he turned and rebuked them. And they went on to another village.
Verses 52-56 detail for us some fun information to have
first, the village of the samaritans...
Samaria lay between Galilee and Judea, you had to pass through this region to get to Jerusalem
Now the animosity and hate for the samaritans led a lot of jews to travel across the Jordan River and walk on the other side until they could recross outside of samaria
This feud started hundreds of years earlier when Assyria had invaded Israel, the northern kingdom, and had resettled it with its own people.
Purebred jews hated the half-breeds and vice versa
Jesus didn't care about this thus he set out to travel through samaria with intention of teaching and performing miracles but they rejected him...
Because of this James and John wanted to call down fire upon them
This is most likely linked to Elijah in 2 Kings 1.9-12 when He called fire down from heaven to consume the men who had mocked God
2 Kings 1:9–12 ESV
Then the king sent to him a captain of fifty men with his fifty. He went up to Elijah, who was sitting on the top of a hill, and said to him, “O man of God, the king says, ‘Come down.’ ” But Elijah answered the captain of fifty, “If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty.” Then fire came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty. Again the king sent to him another captain of fifty men with his fifty. And he answered and said to him, “O man of God, this is the king’s order, ‘Come down quickly!’ ” But Elijah answered them, “If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty.” Then the fire of God came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty.
Luke 9:55–56 ESV
But he turned and rebuked them. And they went on to another village.
The Disciples had been instructed ealier in the chapter in Luke 9.5 “And wherever they do not receive you, when you leave that town shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.””
to simply dust off your feet and move on dont think twice about it
James and John werent satisfied
Jesus knew the samaritans heart wasnt to mock God but rather about a feud between people
Compare it to todays time and dealing with people who mock God and or reject us for our beliefs, leave judgement to God
Luke 9:57–58 ESV
As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”
Talk about Matthew mentioning this is a scribe
Jesus was telling him to let go of the comforts and securities of this world for following Christ has a cost, yet the reward for following him is far more valuable
Also talk about this applying to the scribe
Luke 9:59–62 ESV
To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” And Jesus said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead. But as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” Yet another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”
Unlike the previous guy Jesus told this man to follow him...
His reply to let him FIRST bury his father showed Jesus his priorities were off
just like the third man
preach on this and conclude
Bring up Elisha and killing the Ox so he was not tempted
Salvation is free, but discipleship costs everything we have.
Billy Graham
Preach
Salvation is God’s gift to us because Jesus died for us on the cross. Discipleship is our gift to Him as we take up our cross, die to self, and follow the Lord in everything.
