2 Corinthians 5:1–21 (NLT)
1 For we know that when this earthly tent we live in is taken down (that is, when we die and leave this earthly body), we will have a house in heaven, an eternal body made for us by God himself and not by human hands.
2 We grow weary in our present bodies, and we long to put on our heavenly bodies like new clothing.
3 For we will put on heavenly bodies; we will not be spirits without bodies.
4 While we live in these earthly bodies, we groan and sigh, but it’s not that we want to die and get rid of these bodies that clothe us. Rather, we want to put on our new bodies so that these dying bodies will be swallowed up by life.
5 God himself has prepared us for this, and as a guarantee he has given us his Holy Spirit.
6 So we are always confident, even though we know that as long as we live in these bodies we are not at home with the Lord.
7 For we live by believing and not by seeing.
8 Yes, we are fully confident, and we would rather be away from these earthly bodies, for then we will be at home with the Lord.
9 So whether we are here in this body or away from this body, our goal is to please him.
10 For we must all stand before Christ to be judged. We will each receive whatever we deserve for the good or evil we have done in this earthly body.
11 Because we understand our fearful responsibility to the Lord, we work hard to persuade others. God knows we are sincere, and I hope you know this, too.
12 Are we commending ourselves to you again? No, we are giving you a reason to be proud of us, so you can answer those who brag about having a spectacular ministry rather than having a sincere heart.
13 If it seems we are crazy, it is to bring glory to God. And if we are in our right minds, it is for your benefit.
14 Either way, Christ’s love controls us. Since we believe that Christ died for all, we also believe that we have all died to our old life.
15 He died for everyone so that those who receive his new life will no longer live for themselves. Instead, they will live for Christ, who died and was raised for them.
16 So we have stopped evaluating others from a human point of view. At one time we thought of Christ merely from a human point of view. How differently we know him now!
17 This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!
18 And all of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to himself through Christ. And God has given us this task of reconciling people to him.
19 For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation.
20 So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, “Come back to God!”
21 For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.
INTRODUCTION:

I- OUR FUTURE HOPE (2 Corinthians 5:1-10)

2 Corinthians 5:1–10 (NLT)

A- We have future hope based upon divine knowledge. (2 Corinthians 5:1-3)

2 Corinthians 5:1–3 (NLT)
1 For we know that when this earthly tent we live in is taken down (that is, when we die and leave this earthly body), we will have a house in heaven, an eternal body made for us by God himself and not by human hands.
2 We grow weary in our present bodies, and we long to put on our heavenly bodies like new clothing.
3 For we will put on heavenly bodies; we will not be spirits without bodies.
1- Paul asserts that our future hope is based upon knowledge, not guesswork.
a- “We know” = Οἴδαμεν
2- Our future hope is divinely established.
a- We will have an eternal (αἰώνιον) body made by God (οἰκοδομὴν ἐκ θεοῦ ) Himself!
b- We will not exist as disembodied spirits (οὐ γυμνοὶ), but will have heavenly bodies (τὸ οἰκητήριον...

B- We have future hope anchored in divine guarantee. (2 Corinthians 5:4-8)

2 Corinthians 5:4–8 (NLT)
1- God guarantees our future hope by giving us His Holy Spirit (2 Cor. 5:4-5)
2 Corinthians 5:4–5 (NLT)
4 While we live in these earthly bodies, we groan and sigh, but it’s not that we want to die and get rid of these bodies that clothe us. Rather, we want to put on our new bodies so that these dying bodies will be swallowed up by life.
5 God himself has prepared us for this, and as a guarantee he has given us his Holy Spirit.
a- He has prepared us (κατεργασάμενος) for this hope.
b- This advanced preparation is the guarantee of the Holy Spirit (τὸν ἀρραβῶνα τοῦ πνεύματος).
2- The moment that we leave these earthly tents, we are at home with the Lord. (2 Corinthians 5:6-8)
2 Corinthians 5:6–8 (NLT)
6 So we are always confident, even though we know that as long as we live in these bodies we are not at home with the Lord.
7 For we live by believing and not by seeing.
8 Yes, we are fully confident, and we would rather be away from these earthly bodies, for then we will be at home with the Lord.
a- Our present bodies cannot inherit our eternal home. (1 Corinthians 15:50)
1 Corinthians 15:50 (NLT)
50 What I am saying, dear brothers and sisters, is that our physical bodies cannot inherit the Kingdom of God. These dying bodies cannot inherit what will last forever.
b- When we vacate this body through death, we will immediately be at home with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:8)
2 Corinthians 5:8 (NLT)
8 Yes, we are fully confident, and we would rather be away from these earthly bodies, for then we will be at home with the Lord.

C- We have future hope that has a goal. (2 Corinthians 5:9-10)

2 Corinthians 5:9–10 (NLT)
9 So whether we are here in this body or away from this body, our goal is to please him.
10 For we must all stand before Christ to be judged. We will each receive whatever we deserve for the good or evil we have done in this earthly body.
1- Our goal is to please God - in this body or in the new body. (vs. 9)
2- We are accountable for what we do in this body. (vs. 10)

II- OUR PRESENT PURPOSE (2 Corinthians 5:11-21)

2 Corinthians 5:11–21 (NLT)

A- Our Present Purpose is to persuade others to believer the gospel. (2 Corinthians 5:11)

2 Corinthians 5:11 (NLT)
11 Because we understand our fearful responsibility to the Lord, we work hard to persuade others. God knows we are sincere, and I hope you know this, too.
1- It is important that you and I understand our fearful responsibility to be witnesses for Christ.
2- We are to work hard to persuade people to trust in Christ!

B- Our present purpose is to bring God glory. (2 Corinthians 5:12-13)

2 Corinthians 5:12–13 (NLT)
12 Are we commending ourselves to you again? No, we are giving you a reason to be proud of us, so you can answer those who brag about having a spectacular ministry rather than having a sincere heart.
13 If it seems we are crazy, it is to bring glory to God. And if we are in our right minds, it is for your benefit.
1- Our twofold purpose is :
a. Bring glory to God
b. To benefit other believers.
2- Our purpose is NEVER to brag about ourselves.

C- Our present purpose is to live under the control of Christ. (2 Corinthians 5:14-17)

2 Corinthians 5:14–17 (NLT)
14 Either way, Christ’s love controls us. Since we believe that Christ died for all, we also believe that we have all died to our old life.
15 He died for everyone so that those who receive his new life will no longer live for themselves. Instead, they will live for Christ, who died and was raised for them.
16 So we have stopped evaluating others from a human point of view. At one time we thought of Christ merely from a human point of view. How differently we know him now!
17 This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!
Christ’s love is to be the motivating factor in our lives. (2 Corinthians 5:14)
2 Corinthians 5:14 (NLT)
14 Either way, Christ’s love controls us. Since we believe that Christ died for all, we also believe that we have all died to our old life.
Our purpose in life is to live for Christ, not self. (2 Corinthians 5:15)
2 Corinthians 5:15 (NLT)
15 He died for everyone so that those who receive his new life will no longer live for themselves. Instead, they will live for Christ, who died and was raised for them.
The result of allowing this godly motivation to fuel our purpose is a transformed life. (2 Corinthians 5:16-17)
2 Corinthians 5:16–17 (NLT)
16 So we have stopped evaluating others from a human point of view. At one time we thought of Christ merely from a human point of view. How differently we know him now!
17 This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

D- Our present purpose is to serve as ambassadors, leading people to Christ. (2 Corinthians 5:18-21)

2 Corinthians 5:18–21 (NLT)
18 And all of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to himself through Christ. And God has given us this task of reconciling people to him.
19 For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation.
20 So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, “Come back to God!”
21 For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.
God has given us the task of seeking to reconcile people to God. (2 Corinthians 5:18)
2 Corinthians 5:18 (NLT)
18 And all of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to himself through Christ. And God has given us this task of reconciling people to him.
God has done everything possible to be reconciled with people. (2 Corinthians 5:19)
2 Corinthians 5:19 (NLT)
19 For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation.
God has called us to be ambassadors for Christ. (2 Corinthians 5:20-21)
2 Corinthians 5:20–21 (NLT)
20 So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, “Come back to God!”
21 For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.
