The Importance of the right friendships

My friendship with Josh Jenkins, David Worcester, Andy Worcester
One of the most defining decisions you will make in college is who you pick to be your friends.

1. Who you run with will impact where you end up.

The friends you pick in college will impact your decisions and lifestyle this year.
This year will impact the rest of college.
The rest of college will set the course for the rest of your life.
Proverbs 13:20 ESV
Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.

2. Who you run with will impact who you become.

Proverbs 27:17 ESV
Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.
You become like those you hang around.
Values and standards: what’s normal
Story:
Guitar player for Ozzy Ozborn “He was such a good boy, he hardly used any drugs… Just a little bit of cocaine here and there.”
What if I said that to my wife?
When you pick your friends, you pick your destiny
Pick your closest friends wisely.
This can be called a “reference group”

What is True Biblical Community Supposed to be like?

Tommy’s Story

1. An encouraging family where you belong.

Acts 2:46–47 (ESV)
And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.
Hebrews 3:13 ESV
But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
Following Jesus is not meant to be done alone.
Hebrews 10:25 ESV
not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

2. A place to learn and grow according to God’s Word.

Acts 2:42 ESV
And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
What were the apostles teaching?
The Scriptures
The gospel
The teachings of Jesus

3. A place to have an impact.

A place to have an impact: Matt. 28:19-20
Matthew 28:19–20 ESV
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Impact on eternity.
