The Helper- The Holy Spirit

I do not really think we will get through this entire section, but not sure where we will get so I put it all here and will see how far the Lord allows us to get.

Comfort #1 - The promised Holy Spirit

John 14:15 NASB95

15 “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.

STOP- We need to stop just at that verse just for a minute.

Do you see (v.14) as something you will do as a response to love or as a command?

Jesus had already demonstrated His love by washing the stinky feet (Jn13:1-5)

He did command them to wash one another’s (13:14-15)

He did command to love one another (13:34)

He did command to put faith in Him like they did in God (14:1)

Now again, look at (14:15) is this a command or is it a result because of love?

Now, let’s look at the next two verses

John 14:16–17 NASB95

16 “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; 17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.

What do you notice in these two verses?

Who is the Him in these verses, and how do you know?

Extra credit question regarding the abiding, do you notice a change (v.17) about the abiding?

The apostles were thinking that their teacher was abandoning them. They did not know what they were going to do. Yet he was telling them they were not going to have less help, be helpless, they were going to have more help if he goes! for He will ask the Father to give another helper to be with them forever.

The oneness movement has a hard-time with the Trinitarian picture painted her of the Son asking the Father to send the Holy Spirit, so here we have all three persons of the Trinity.

Notice it says “He will give” it was not like may give, could give, possibly will give, it is a done deal. For the Father knows the Son and the Son knows the Father for they are One. For the Father is in the Son and the Son is in the Father.

Let’s talk about “another helper” this is the Greek word “parakletos” that means Comforter or some say helper. One who comes along side.

A better word for along side is “Allen” meaning “another of the same kind” meaning that of the same as God, same as Jesus in stature, in nature but in job different.

Trench says it like this: Wouldn’t it be nice to walk your Christian life knowing that Christ is walking right beside you each step of the say? Jesus promised the holy Spirit would fulfill that role, starting with the apostles.” - - - how great is that. That same Spirit abides in you when your sins were washed away.

If it were not for the Holy Spirit the greater works mentioned (14:12) would not have been accomplished and you would not be holding the Bible, you would not be sitting here today having had the Good News preached to you.

Morris says: “The Advocate will be with the disciples ‘for ever’ The new state of affairs will be permanent. The Spirit once given will not be withdrawn.” -

This is how the New Testament was to be written. This is the Spirit of truth, not the spirit of this age that is contrary to the truth and does not know the Spirit

I like what I found from Guzik when contrasted with the world why the world cannot know the Spirit

In contrast to the world, the disciple of Jesus should know the Holy Spirit

In contrast to the world, disciple of Jesus should have the Holy Spirit with them.

“For those 11 disciples, the Holy Spirit was already with them, and would later be in them. this was fulfilled when Jesus breathed on them and they received the Holy Spirit

John 20:22 NASB95

22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.

Then the promise that it was to come in power

Acts 1:8 NASB95

8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”

So they could accomplish the work He set for them to do.

Matthew 28:20 NASB95

20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Will not be orphans

John 14:18–19 NASB95

18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 “After a little while the world will no longer see Me, but you will see Me; because I live, you will live also.

John 14:20–21 NASB95

20 “In that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. 21 “He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him.”

Jesus will not leave them as orphans

Jesus gave them the next assurance. They needed the assurance for it was common when a teacher died or left the disciple was considered an orphan since the teacher was gone since the teacher was considered a father. The student was considered the children. So they would be orphans when the father was gone.

Jesus assures the troubled hearts that He would not leave them as orphans.

In this passage Jesus assured

He would give another Helper

Helper would be with them forever

Let me go back about the orphan for a minute in what I found from Spurgeon

An orphan has parents who are dead: The Spirit shows us Jesus is alive

An orphan is left alone, Jesus promises the Spirit will never leave them alone

An orphan lost their provider; the Spirit provides all things.

An orphan is left without instruction; The Spirit teaches all things.

An orphan has no defender; the Spirit is protector.

Jesus already assured them He could come again

John 14:3 NASB95

3 “If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.

One a physical return of Him; and can this be the sending of the Holy Spirit that comes as “Paraclete” of like kind but different, of same nature of Jesus?

Could this be when He comes to them after the resurrection? For he says the world would not see Him but they would?

We know what Paul wrote in 2Cor

2 Corinthians 5:16 NASB95

16 Therefore from now on we recognize no one according to the flesh; even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him in this way no longer.

For they saw him in the flesh, believed in the flesh, but more so in the Spirit we too believe in the Spirit and are born again through Spirit and are new creations.

2 Corinthians 5:17 NASB95

17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

The old, believing only because we have seen. Jesus later says this

John 20:29 NASB95

29 Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.”

Lightfoot says: “A man is saved because Christ died for Him, He continues to be saved because Christ lives for Him and he walks with Him. The sole reason why the Spiritual life abides is, is because the Spirit abides within him.

John 14:20 ESV

20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.

The union is marked by the knowledge of the Son in the Father, and The Son in You, which means the Father in You.

So:

Knowledge of the Fathers will (commandments)

Knowledge of and willful obedience to the God’s will (keeping the commandments)

Knowledge of God’s love and your love for the Father and the Son in keeping the commandments.

This will be ind the reciprocal of the love by the Father and the Son.

The revelation of Jesus (and manifest myself to Him (you will see ME) v.20!

John 14:21 NLT

21 Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them.”

In closing, I knew we would not finish it all, but hey, we have plenty of weeks left unless the Lord returns.

Love, The Father loves and gave you His commandments, The Son reminds you of the Commandments.

The keeping the commandments before was out of demand, the keeping now is out of love. It is out of demonstrative love for the Father and the Son and the results will be disclosure of the love by the Father and the Son to them. This being spoken to the apostles who had troubled hearts.

So, what can we learn from this passage tonight? What can we take away from this? Keep in mind this was spoken at a particular time to specific people in a specific situation.
