We are continuing our series on Spiritual Disciplines called Level up!
We have currently talked through Bible Reading, Serving, Worship, and Prayer
This week we are talking about evangelism!
Evangelism in it’s most simply form is sharing the Gospel
It’s telling people about who God is
So tonight we are going to look at 3 things
First why should you share the Gospel
Two what is the Gospel
Three how do you share the Gospel
Why share the Gospel?
Why share the Gospel?
So why should you share the Gospel?
Two reasons!
Jesus commands it
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
We are told to share the Gospel
To be witnesses for Christ
To go and tell people about the Gospel
It is a command from Jesus so it is something that we should do!
It’s how we show love
There is no better way to show love to someone than to tell them the Gospel
We are commanded all throughout Scripture to love our neighbor
The best way and only true way to love your neighbor is by making sure they know the Gospel
Making sure that they believe in Jesus as Lord of their life
There may be many more reasons to share the Gospel, but at the bare minimum we should share because Jesus commands it, and because we love others
What is the Gospel?
What is the Gospel?
If that's the why, the next thing is what is the Gospel?
To share the Gospel we must know what it is
Very simply put the Gospel is the good news of Jesus
His life, His death, His burial, and His resurrection
The Gospel is understanding that we are sinners
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
It’s believing that we cannot get to God
6 We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
It’s believing that Jesus is the only way
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
That while we were still sinners Christ died for us
8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
And that we are saved through trusting in Jesus
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
That is the Gospel!
We are dead in our sins
We are far from God
We cannot reach God
But God sent Jesus who lived a perfect life, the life we cannot live
And then He died on the cross, a death we deserved because of our sin
Then is offering us forgiveness and life if we trust in Him
That is the Gospel
How do we share it?
How do we share it?
So how do you share the Gospel?
There is a lot of ways you can share it, I mean literally just going up and telling someone what the Gospel is, is sharing the Gospel
But I want to give you three ways you can share the Gospel in a more organic and natural way
Share your story
Share your story
The number one easiest way to share the Gospel is:
Share your story
Share the story of how you can believe and trust in Jesus
This is your personal testimony
It’s how you met Jesus and what Jesus did in your life
I think of the story of the blind man in John
He was born blind until Jesus came and changed his life
His response:
8 The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar were saying, “Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?” 9 Some said, “It is he.” Others said, “No, but he is like him.” He kept saying, “I am the man.” 10 So they said to him, “Then how were your eyes opened?” 11 He answered, “The man called Jesus made mud and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So I went and washed and received my sight.”
That’s the same thing with your story
Before you met Jesus you were the blind man, lost in your sin and eternal deserving of death
Then you met Jesus he cleaned you up and saved your life
Now you are living according to Christ, things in your life changed
It is simple, it is effective
It is personal
Elevator pitch
Elevator pitch
The next way is another simple one, its an
Elevator pitch
All an elevator pitch is, is sharing something in a short amount of time
I think of an “elevator pitch” on the Gospel as having 2 minutes or less to tell someone about Jesus
Its when you have the ability to share, in not a lot of time
Paul gives us a blueprint for this
22 So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: “Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. 23 For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription: ‘To the unknown god.’ What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. 24 The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, 25 nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. 26 And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, 27 that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, 28 for “ ‘In him we live and move and have our being’; as even some of your own poets have said, “ ‘For we are indeed his offspring.’ 29 Being then God’s offspring, we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of man. 30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, 31 because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”
What is the most important things to mention?
God created the world
The world turned on God and fell into sin
Sin separates us from God
God sent Jesus to live a perfect life, and die in our place
He raised from the dead and is offering us life
All we have to do is repent and trust in Him
The elevator pitch is simply being able to share the Gospel without a Bible
It is sharing the truth quickly
Ask good questions
Ask good questions
The last way I want to mention to you is another simple one
Ask good questions
This may sound simple but you should be asking good questions
What I mean is this
You will constantly have people that are going to tell you about their day, about their life, about things that are going on in their life that they are struggling with
The key to turning any conversation to a Gospel conversation is asking them good questions
When they say something happened that is bad or hard ask them why it’s hard
Ask them what makes it so difficult
Ask who they turned to when they felt hopeless
Ask them if they see God in the situation that they are talking about
The easiest way to share the Gospel is to be intentional with the questions that you ask someone
If you get them to answer spiritual questions that allows you to bring up Christ organically
Conclusion
Conclusion
We need to be sharing the Gospel
Jesus commanded it and it’s how we show love to people
The Gospel is the message of Jesus
What he did, why He did it, and why it’s important
You can share a multitude of ways
But the most important thing to remember is this:
“Friends don’t let friends die and go to Hell without telling them about Jesus”
