Exodus 21-23 Pt. 2
Exodus 21:1 (ESV)
Now these are the rules that you shall set
before them.
Romans 7:12 (ESV)
So the law is holy, and the commandment [a
synonym for “judgement”] is holy and righteous
and good.
Leviticus 19:36 (ESV)
You shall have just balances, just weights, a
just ephah [dry volume of 22 liters or 3/5 bushel],
and a just hin [wet volume of 3.5 litres or 4 quarts]: I
am the LORD your God, who brought you
out of the land of Egypt.
Exodus 21:34 (ESV) the owner of the pit shall make
restoration. He shall give money to its owner, and the
dead beast shall be his.
Exodus 21:36 (ESV) Or if it is known that the ox has
been accustomed to gore in the past, and its owner has
not kept it in, he shall repay ox for ox, and the dead beast
shall be his.
Exodus 22:1 (ESV) “If a man steals an ox or a sheep, and
kills it or sells it, he shall repay five oxen for an ox, and
four sheep for a sheep.
Exodus 22:3–7 (ESV) but if the sun has risen on him, there shall be
bloodguilt for him. He shall surely pay. If he has nothing, then he
4
shall be sold for his theft. If the stolen beast is found alive in his
possession, whether it is an ox or a donkey or a sheep, he shall
5
pay double. “If a man causes a field or vineyard to be grazed
over, or lets his beast loose and it feeds in another man’s field, he
shall make restitution from the best in his own field and in his
6
own vineyard. “If fire breaks out and catches in thorns so that the
stacked grain or the standing grain or the field is consumed, he
7
who started the fire shall make full restitution. “If a man gives
to his neighbor money or goods to keep safe, and it is stolen from
the man’s house, then, if the thief is found, he shall pay double.
Exodus 22:9 (ESV)
For every breach of trust, whether it is for an ox,
for a donkey, for a sheep, for a cloak, or for any
kind of lost thing, of which one says, ‘This is it,’
the case of both parties shall come before God.
The one whom God condemns shall pay double
to his neighbor.
Exodus 22:11–15 (ESV) an oath by the Lord shall be
between them both to see whether or not he has put his
hand to his neighbor’s property. The owner shall accept the
12
oath, and he shall not make restitution. But if it is stolen
13
from him, he shall make restitution to its owner. If it is
torn by beasts, let him bring it as evidence. He shall not
14
make restitution for what has been torn. “If a man
borrows anything of his neighbor, and it is injured or dies,
the owner not being with it, he shall make full restitution.
15If the owner was with it, he shall not make restitution; if
it was hired, it came for its hiring fee.
Deuteronomy 24:13 (ESV)
You shall restore to him the pledge as the sun
sets, that he may sleep in his cloak and bless
you. And it shall be righteousness for you
before the LORD your God.
Isaiah 32:16–18 (ESV)
Then justice will dwell in the wilderness, and
17
righteousness abide in the fruitful field. And
the effect of righteousness will be peace, and
the result of righteousness, quietness and trust
18
forever. My people will abide in a peaceful
habitation, in secure dwellings, and in quiet
resting places.
Psalm 33:5 (ESV)
He loves righteousness and justice
[i.e.,judgements ָט#ְ%ִ מof Exodus 21:1]; the earth is
full of the steadfast love of the LORD.
Jeremiah 9:24 (ESV)
but let him who boasts boast in this, that he
understands and knows me, that I am the
LORD who practices [lit. does] steadfast
love, justice, and righteousness in the earth.
For in these things I delight, declares the
LORD.”
Hebrews 1:8–9 (ESV)
But of the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, is
forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the
9
scepter of your kingdom. You have loved
righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God,
your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness
beyond your companions.”
from Psalm 45:6–7
Psalm 11:7 (ESV)
For the LORD is righteous; he loves
righteous deeds; the upright shall behold
his face.
James 3:5–6 (ESV)
So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts
of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by
6
such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, a world
of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our
members, staining the whole body, setting on fire
the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.
Romans 3:10 (ESV)
as it is written: “None is righteous,
no, not one;
Titus 3:5 (ESV)
he saved us, not because of works done by
us in righteousness, but according to his
own mercy, by the washing of regeneration
and renewal of the Holy Spirit,
1 Peter 3:18 (ESV)
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the
righteous for the unrighteous, that he
might bring us to God, being put to death
in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,
1 Peter 2:24 (ESV)
He himself bore our sins in his body on the
tree, that we might die to sin and live to
righteousness. By his wounds you have been
healed.
Ephesians 4:24 (ESV)
and to put on the new self, created after
the likeness of God in true righteousness
and holiness.
Philippians 1:11 (ESV)
filled with the fruit of righteousness that
comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory
and praise of God.
Romans 6:19 (ESV)
I am speaking in human terms, because of your
natural limitations. For just as you once
presented your members as slaves to impurity
and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness,
so now present your members as slaves to
righteousness leading to sanctification.
Hebrews 1:9 (ESV)
You have loved righteousness and hated
wickedness; therefore God, your God, has
anointed you with the oil of gladness
beyond your companions.”
2 Timothy 2:22 (ESV)
So flee youthful passions and pursue
righteousness, faith, love, and peace,
along with those who call on the Lord
from a pure heart.
1 John 3:10 (ESV)
By this it is evident who are the children of
God, and who are the children of the devil:
whoever does not practice righteousness is
not of God, nor is the one who does not love
his brother.
1 Corinthians 6:9–10 (ESV)
Or do you not know that the unrighteous
will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not
be deceived: neither the sexually immoral,
nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who
10
practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the
greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor
swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
Isaiah 9:6-7 (ESV)
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the
government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall
be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting
Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government
and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David
and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with
justice and with righteousness from this time forth and
forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.
