So we are starting now into the genealogy of Seth. Remember this is the new genealogy to combat the one Cain or rather the enemy started with Cain. There will be a lot of names, so just be aware. But again when we are done, you will see the plan and grace of God and I pray it will be awesome. We will go through kind of fast on this one. I am planning to hit 5 and 6 but we will see how it goes
So here we go
Genesis 5:1–5 NKJV
1 This is the book of the genealogy of Adam. In the day that God created man, He made him in the likeness of God. 2 He created them male and female, and blessed them and called them Mankind in the day they were created. 3 And Adam lived one hundred and thirty years, and begot a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth. 4 After he begot Seth, the days of Adam were eight hundred years; and he had sons and daughters. 5 So all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years; and he died.
First thing is look at all the ages. Who is ready to live that long. I don’t want no part of that down here. Now up there in heaven yeah forever. Not here though.
Now notice there, that Adam had sons and daughters. He lived for 930 years. Keep in mind that he was created and not born. Side note riddle but may have some truth in it. Scientist find two people perfectly preserved and they immediately know it is Adam and Eve. How?
Ok just wanted to keep you on your toes. So they were created not born so that means the entirety of the 930 years were baby making years. If we want to calculate and give him a break at the latter of his life we can take off 100 years. So that means 830 years of children making. If he made 1 a year that is 830 kids. Sign me up Lord. Lol Why am I making a point of that? Because I want you to see that if you read the bible, some of the hard questions about the bible because easy to answer. Can you imagine how quickly the earth became populated. I mean it doesn’t take too many people to create a town and city etc with those numbers. So cain’s wife…you can see where she came from.
I am going to give you some names and meanings. I want you to write them down but do it on a separate sheet or separate side of the paper. In a column.
This is the beginning of the genealogy of Jesus. So this is leading up to the messiah. It is an amazing thing that as soon as we see the enemy seeming to have his way, our Lord comes in and pushes his plan. He will not be deterred.
So let’s look
Adam means Man
Seth means ordained or appointed
When we go through these next few generations, unless noted in scripture we cannot just assume that these are first born children ok. Some people take that route and I believe that you can do a disservice to God’s plan and the way we will see him do things later if you just automatically assume that they are first born sons or daughters.
Genesis 5:6–14 NKJV
6 Seth lived one hundred and five years, and begot Enosh. 7 After he begot Enosh, Seth lived eight hundred and seven years, and had sons and daughters. 8 So all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years; and he died. 9 Enosh lived ninety years, and begot Cainan. 10 After he begot Cainan, Enosh lived eight hundred and fifteen years, and had sons and daughters. 11 So all the days of Enosh were nine hundred and five years; and he died. 12 Cainan lived seventy years, and begot Mahalalel. 13 After he begot Mahalalel, Cainan lived eight hundred and forty years, and had sons and daughters. 14 So all the days of Cainan were nine hundred and ten years; and he died.
Enosh actually has two roots. I told you last week that it means man. Which is one of its roots the other means weak. So for the purpose of tonight, we will deal with the latter since I explained the former one last week. So Enosh means weak.
Cainan means woven together
Mahalalel means blessed of God. Who is the blessed of God?
Hebrews 1:3 ESV
3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
This is why it is so important that we accept him. That we follow him. His blessed removes our sin. His radiance covers our darkness.
Genesis 5:15–24 NKJV
15 Mahalalel lived sixty-five years, and begot Jared. 16 After he begot Jared, Mahalalel lived eight hundred and thirty years, and had sons and daughters. 17 So all the days of Mahalalel were eight hundred and ninety-five years; and he died. 18 Jared lived one hundred and sixty-two years, and begot Enoch. 19 After he begot Enoch, Jared lived eight hundred years, and had sons and daughters. 20 So all the days of Jared were nine hundred and sixty-two years; and he died. 21 Enoch lived sixty-five years, and begot Methuselah. 22 After he begot Methuselah, Enoch walked with God three hundred years, and had sons and daughters. 23 So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. 24 And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.
So Jared means come down
Then we get to Enoch. I’ll give you his name meaning which is to train or to inaugurate. There is so much going on I am trying to contain myself and keep it simple. Some of you that were in our lift group know where I am going with all of this so just stay patient.
So Enoch. Let’s talk about him for a moment. First of all, look at your name list. What number is Enoch? 7. So the 7th generation in the Cain line was evil evil man. The 7th in the chosen line of Seth is so close with God that he was taken by God. I want you to think about that for just a moment. God was so enamored with His relationship Enoch that he doesn’t want to have any moment away from him. Now his walking with God the verb used there in the Hebrew means to walk back and forth with God. Meaning that every where he went he was going with God. There was no wavering. There was no hesitation nor was there any doubt from others who he was with. He was walking with God and then he was not. He was here and then he was not. He is on the earth and then boom no trace. No notice. God just said it is time. Does that sound familiar of maybe an upcoming moment. That God would call His children home and in the twinkling of an eye we will be no more on this earth. WOW WOW WOW. I know it isn’t the same thing but it is very similar. But imagine having that type of a relationship with god. No one else ever had it. Elijah is the closest with him not dying. Moses is the closest in actual relationship but moses died. Noah is considered the most righteous among the earth. Elijah was carried away. Enoch, just was not. Enoch is in full physical body, living in Heaven right now. Or maybe he was translated to a new body. Or maybe he went to heaven and his physical form couldn’t take it and died. We don’t know any of those answers. All we know that God loved him so much that he didn’t wait for him to die on this earth before taking him. Lord let us pursue that type of relationship with you. Let us strive for that tenderness that love of you.
I wonder what his wife thought. I wonder who was with him when he was not any more. Like these are the thoughts I have. Because when you read the bible you can’t just read the bible, you have to read the bible. Can I say this. It is ok to wonder these things. I think its fun. It bring reality to the scripture. What is not ok is to make an idol out of speculation. Or honestly to make an idol even out of this bible and it can happen. Ask the pharisees.
Something else about Enoch. Look at
Jude 14–15 ESV
14 It was also about these that Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his holy ones, 15 to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness that they have committed in such an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.”
Enoch is prophesying about the second coming of Christ. Do you know how far away from the second coming Enoch was but because of his relationship he got to see it. The first coming hasn’t made it yet but he gets to see the second one. How incredible.
That being said I want to make a statement here. Because I want to make sure that my heart is understood. My goal in teaching this way and studying this way is to get closer to my Father. My heart is after him. Pastor made a comment on Sunday about numerology and how he wasn’t really into all of that. I am to a point. But I will not worship it or idolize it. I like the patterns that the bible uses. The number 12, the number 40, the number 7, the number 6 and there are others. When I see those I want to see how they fit. Some folks take this too far and see that all the numbers mean something and they are all from God to point to some thing blah blah blah. Maybe they are right. I doubt it because the numbers of verses and chapters etc were never written in original. Ok. So don’t go searching to find some hidden code in every number. Though I do believe that every word of this bible was written for a reason, it doesn’t mean it is a hidden reason. Which is why for example I am not harping on the numbers of their lives. I just think those were the numbers of their life. If there is something Godly about how long they lived, God will show me that in heaven or really have to grab my attention to even start looking down here. I don’t care that much.
So back to Enoch can we all agree that besides Jesus who is the one we are to mimic, if there was any other life, Enoch might be that one. He walked with God. I pray when my life is gone should the Lord tarry, that be on my tombstone. He walked with God.
We have been studying this on Sundays but look at this
Hebrews 11:5 ESV
5 By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God.
He pleased God. HE PLEASED GOD!!! Oh Lord let me please you like this. Do you understand the level of this. Before you say well this is Enoch. I mean come on. NO!!!! Do not excuse your sin. You realize that in his day God is preparing to destroy the entire earth because of its sin. How little effort it would have taken for Enoch to just reach the bare minimum of a good life with God. I mean he could have looked around the world and said at least I am not like that. That is the bottom rung. That is what we do now. What is the bare minimum Lord. I keep harping on these things week after week because God keeps bringing them up because He wants more out of you. He expects more out of you. More out of me. My comparison isn’t to other people it is to HIM. He is the standard. Perfection. Holiness. Righteousness. That is the bar to hit and if I am not striving for that bar because of the love and forgiveness and freedom given me do I really have any of that or am I just giving lip service. This is what I have to continually ask myself because I don’t want to be that guy who just barely got by or the guy who just halfway served. Job was considered a righteous man. We all like to point this out. God pointed to Job about his righteousness. But do you know what Job did when he met God.
Job 40:4 NKJV
4 “Behold, I am vile; What shall I answer You? I lay my hand over my mouth.
Job who God said was righteous says I am vile compared to you. I am nothing. So much so that I will not even open my mouth to answer you. Job was righteous but his suffering did what it will do for us if we don’t wine and complain about it take us to a new level of understanding about God. God always uses the sufferings. There are things you cannot learn except through suffering. Quit asking for everything to be erased from you life, lean into the suffering and draw closer to God.
We have to quit getting offended at the one we are supposed to serve because we don’t think he is serving us adequately.
It should never be that attitude. that is pride and sinful. Enoch was not that way. Enoch walked back and forth with the Lord and that is standard.
Genesis 5:25–28 NKJV
25 Methuselah lived one hundred and eighty-seven years, and begot Lamech. 26 After he begot Lamech, Methuselah lived seven hundred and eighty-two years, and had sons and daughters. 27 So all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred and sixty-nine years; and he died. 28 Lamech lived one hundred and eighty-two years, and had a son.
Methuselah means his death sends. The oldest man in history. 969. Now yall wanna know what his life numbers mean? I am just kidding. I have no idea and don’t care. Just wanted to see if you were paying attention to my mini-rant. What I do want to take note. The year he dies, the flood comes.
Lamech means powerful
This is the good Lamech by the way. Let me state that for the record. Last week we had the bad one this week the good one. Both powerful one more so than the other.
Next
Genesis 5:28–32 NKJV
28 Lamech lived one hundred and eighty-two years, and had a son. 29 And he called his name Noah, saying, “This one will comfort us concerning our work and the toil of our hands, because of the ground which the Lord has cursed.” 30 After he begot Noah, Lamech lived five hundred and ninety-five years, and had sons and daughters. 31 So all the days of Lamech were seven hundred and seventy-seven years; and he died. 32 And Noah was five hundred years old, and Noah begot Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
The last one we will talk about is Noah. Noah means rest. Now here is what I need. I need 10 of yall to come up front and you will be given a name meaning. When I point to you I will have you say the name and you are going to see something really cool.
