INTRODUCTION: Working in the service industry. Red shirt at Target one likes it. WE try to get out of it as young as possible.
TENSION: What if serving others is the greatest thing you will ever do?
1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
Feast of passover - Last supper, it was very important.
Jesus loved his people to the very end. That love was going to be motivate what was happening next.
Service is motivated by love
Service is motivated by love
All service is, it might be for recognition, or for money. But you are doing it for the love of something. Jesus did it for the love of others.
2 During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him,
Remember this - Judas was there to.
John 13:3–4 (ESV)
3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, 4 rose from supper.
Not only did he do this because of love, but because his relationship with God.
We were made by God, are going to God and have been a task by God.
Genuine service requires a genuine relationship with God
Genuine service requires a genuine relationship with God
At the end of the day, if you are truly going to serve people it is an overflow of your relationship with God. I have never meant a spiritually mature person who refused to serve others.
Jesus did something crazy, absolutely unexpected. This would have never been done. Rabbi said, I will do anything for anyone as long as I keep my superiority.
John 13:4–5 (ESV)
4) He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
VISUAL ILLUSTRATION - Take off Jacket and put on apron and grab bowl.
Could you image the King of England, doing dishes?
But why did Jesus did? Luke 22 says they were arguing about who was the greatest. Why were they arguing about that, because seating order was a big deal.
Not good - like when my wife ask me to take out the garbage and I forget, then walk downstarirs the next day and see her do it. I’m in trouble!!!
But why were they arguing?
VISUAL PICTURES, FIRST TWO
ILLUSTRATION - Big kids table.
taking a towel, tied it around his waist. - position of a servant.
Not even Jewish servent, but Gentile.
disciples feet - feet were gross, like when you take feet off at someone’s house, haha sometimes that it is better to keep them on.
This is one of the problems we face, people come to church and think how can I be served, is the music my preferences, is kids exact what I want, was the preacher funny enough, you should be asking. Is this a place I can obey God by serving His church.
John 13:6–10 (ESV)
6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” 7 Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” 8 Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” 9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean.
Someone should have served but no one did. They were all consumed with being great with having others serve them.
He is going to ask why are you washing my feet? - Good.
Never - haha bad.If you tell God never, you are almost certainly going to do that.
Jesus is going past the physical here to the spiritual.
V11 - Jesus washed Judas feet too.
You should serve because Jesus serves you
You should serve because Jesus serves you
Kara holly stroy f laughs needed.
This is the point of Philippians 2 .
5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
John 13:11 (ESV)
And you are clean, but not every one of you.” 11 For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”
Pictures, discuss Judas was there too!
12 When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? 13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.
When Jesus became a servant he never stopped being the Lord. But rather he covered our put on parenthood.
You are never more like Jesus than when you are serving
You are never more like Jesus than when you are serving
16 Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
v16 - truely - pay attention!
If you are not serving you think you are more important than Jesus!
He had less time and more things to do.
Reread is verse 17: blessed are you if you are do them.
You want to have a blessed life. Serve.
If Jesus served then we must too.
