The two different views that have emerged regarding the date of the Exodus are the Early Date and the Late Date views, each of which have their own proposition of which century the events recorded in the book of Exodus took place. The Early Date view proposes that the Exodus took place during the reign of Amenophis II between 1446 to 1437. On the other hand, the Late Date view proposes that it took place during while Ramesus II was pharaoh
Biblical scholars who are committed to some form of multiple authorship associated with the documentary hypothesis for the composition of the Pentateuch divide Exodus into three major sources: the J (or Yahwist), the E (or Elohist), and the P (or Priestly) documents. Chapters 1–34 are generally regarded a “splicing” of J and E and P, while chapters 35–40 are considered Priestly material (P).
