Links Between Abraham and David

God promises both “a great name” (Gen. 12:2; 2 Sam. 7:9).

In the future both will conquer their enemies (Gen. 22:17; 2 Sam. 7:11; cf. Ps. 89:23);

Both have a special divine-human relationship (Gen. 17:7–8; 2 Sam. 7:24; cf. Ps. 89:26).

A special line of “seed” perpetuates both of their names (Gen. 21:12; 2 Sam. 7:12–16).

The descendants of both must keep God’s laws (Gen. 18:19; 2 Sam. 7:14; cf. Pss. 89:30–32; 132:12).

The offspring of both would mediate international blessing (Gen. 22:18; Ps. 72:17).

2 Samuel 7:16 “And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.’ ”

The King they expected

a. One having power over others

Mark 10:35-45 “And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” And he said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?” And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. b. Someone possessing great wealth

Matthew 8:18-20 “Now when Jesus saw a crowd around him, he gave orders to go over to the other side. And a scribe came up and said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”

c. One who uses force for advancement

Matthew 26:47-56 “While he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man; seize him.” And he came up to Jesus at once and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” And he kissed him. The King we received

a. One who had more attributes of a servant

John 13:5-13 “Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. b. Someone who was far from materialistic

c. One who loved “even His enemies”

Matthew 5:43-44 ““You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,”

The road to the new covenant

2 Samuel 7:9 “And I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth.”

1 Chronicles 22:6-9 “Then he called for Solomon his son and charged him to build a house for the Lord, the God of Israel. David said to Solomon, “My son, I had it in my heart to build a house to the name of the Lord my God. But the word of the Lord came to me, saying, ‘You have shed much blood and have waged great wars. John 19:19-21 “Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross.
