Introduction

Some time ago I had the wonderful opportunity to visit Egypt. Of course a highlight of the tour was a visit to the great pyramids of Giza. Although there are over 100 pyramids in Egypt his set of 3 pyramids are the most iconic.
As you enter the site immediately outside of it is a sign reading welcome to the pyramids of Giza—built for eternity.
That subscript is displayed throughout and speaks to the expert way the pyramids were built to withstand the heat, the winds and the elements for over 4000 years.
These pyramids are the only of the seven ancient wonders of the world that are still intact. There are still debates as to how it was even possible to build these structures so solidly, so carefully, so artfully.
How it was possible to have the architectual knowledge and the brute strength to construct these pyramids thousands of years ago is still a mystery.
The built for eternity phrase has a two fold meaning which speaks not only to the manner in which these pyramids were constructed to endure the tests of time but also speaks to their purpose.
The pyramids are the tombs of the pharoahs of that time. Thought to be their final resting places as they began the journey into the afterlife, the hoped for eternity that was waiting for them on the other side of life on earth.
And it struck me that each one of us is also built for eternity. The way, the manner that God shapes our lives and the life of this church as we celebrate 135 years. The manner in which God shapes us to withstand the tests, the trials of life ensure that we are still standing. Shaped, molded, built in strength and endurance, built for faithfulness, built for eternity.
And built with purpose. Built for the eternal life that has been promised to us. Built for the day that we stand before God and hear the words well done my good and faithful servant. Built for eternity.
