Introduction
Attention:
Thankful to Bob for opportunity to speak
My job = hanging out w/ and teaching students
Students know I love questions
Here’s one for you:
How many of you like golf?
Have never played (unless Mario Golf or Wii Sports counts, but I doubt it).
But I know someone who has
Call Lincoln up on stage
Brought his clubs with him today
Three types:
Woods
Irons
Putters
Woods
Used at beginning
Covers a large amount of ground
Irons
Require more finesse and accuracy
But still cover a good bit of distance.
Putters.
Amateurs fall to practice
Sad,bc most important
Short distances; once in the green
Why tell this?
Three main types of Biblical teaching (Platt)
Sermons = woods
Lots of people and cover a lot of ground
But not really relationship based.
Small groups = irons
More personal than sermons bc opportunity for feedback and dialogue.
One-on-one discipleship = putter.
Personal & messy
Often failed to practice = REALLY unfortunate.
This lesson = one-on-one discipleship.
2 Timothy 2:1-2
Need:
Believers need to here
Have never participated
Jesus wants to change
Need an answer to: “okay, I’m saved, but now what? How do I grow?”
Aren’t believer = need to hear
The life and purpose God intends
Body
The Big Idea: Engage in discipleship
The Big Question: How can I engage in discipleship?
Through grace
1 You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus,
Context is King
From Paul to Timothy
Timothy = Paul’s protégé
Paul probably led his family to Christ in Lystra (Acts 14)
Timothy joined Paul on second missionary journey.
Talk more about relationship later
Why letter sent?
Paul = Roman prison > Impending execution
Paul sends to Timothy during final moments
Heresy spreading at Ephesus
Probably an early form of Gnostism
Causing problems
2 Timothy = Paul’s final challenge
Now, focus-in on verse
The command = “be strengthened” or “be strong”
Why?
List of imperatives in Chapter 1 that require strength
First imperative summarizes them all
6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands,
Important bc false teaching
Timothy letting fire die = the church dying
Needs strength
Where found? (look back at main verse)
1 You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus,
The grace of Christ
Not in Timothy himself
False teachers > self strength
From without rather than from within
Grace enabled Timothy to do these commands
Also Grace = Foundation for Engaging in Discipleship
No one deserves to pour in or be poured in to
Grace equips us to engage
Growing in what we have received
Sharing what we have received with out
Strengthened Continually
Monday and Tuesday = Sunday and Wednesday.
Lifelong process
Illustration:
Ask: Who likes to garden?
Death of a succulent
Don’t grow without water
Can’t grow in discipleship apart from His grace
Its all because of His grace
Application:
Discipled and discipling = feeling tired
Get out of that mindset?
Rest in His grace.
Give you strength to engage
Transition Statement: Grace empowers us to engage first, in being discipled
The Big Question: How can I engage in discipleship?
Through grace
Through getting it
Explanation:
2 and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.
Timothy heard from Paul
What hear?
The Gospel!
“Jesus in my place!”
Sinner,
Bridge
Jesus
Cross
Wrath
Resurrection > death defeated
Why Timothy hear Gospel from Paul? bc discipleship!
Paul “passed on” Gospel to Timothy by meeting one-on-one
So, Timothy challenged to recall discipleship
The call to continue to learn and grow
Remembrance = continued growth
Why did Paul disciple Timothy?
So that Timothy could disciple others! (more later)
Would Timothy be effective without? Nope!
Disciplers need to be discipled
Never grow out of!
Everybody needs to learn & grow always!
How help someone else if not growing myself?
But… Can disciple while being discipled? Absolutelty!
Don’t wait until you’ve “arrived,” just seek own development too
Disciplers get discipled.
Engage in discipleship = “Get it”
Illustration:
Ask: How many teachers do we have in the room?
Ask: What else do you have to be in order to be a good teacher?
A learner
Continual process
Disciplers get discipled (continually)
Application:
Ever been discipled 1-on-1?
What will it take?
Think of people you could ask
Commit = write their name down!
Connect right after church
Transition Statement: Discipleship isn’t only something for us to receive; it is also something for us to give
The Big Question: How can I engage in discipleship?
Through grace
Through getting it
Through giving it
Explanation:
2 and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.
Timothy’s need to equip others
“Faithful men” = already believers
Different from evangelism!
Evan vitally important, but so is discipleship!
“Every Christian leader needs to be looking for some faithful believers who can do the same.” -David Platt
Biggest weaknesses in today’s church = lack of 2 Timothy 2:2 ministry
Not practiced often. Why?
Two reasons (David Platt):
Relationships (they take time)
Sermons take awhile to prepare, but relationships take longer
Relationships = messy & costly. But worth it
Viewpoint of “bonus work”
More secondary than primary
Couldn’t be more wrong
Directly mentioned in Great Commission
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Which part is one-on-one discipelship?
“Go and make disciples.”
Evangelism
Don’t get discipled before becoming a disciple
“Teaching them”
THAT’S 2 Timothy 2:2 ministry.
Teaching others to follow what Jesus said
Sermons like this can be helpful, but discipleship is necessary
Can’t hold everyone accountable in this setting
No other way to do successful accountability apart from this
What observing?
37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
Discipleship = helping people love Jesus and everyone else
Learning to love best in the context of relationships
Created as relational beings
In our DNA
Example: 2020
Samie and I going three months without seeing each other
Also, friends (favorite coffee shop shut down)
Even introverts struggled!
Everyone,has social needs
Seek to meet through discipleship
But what looks like? (David Platt)
First, careful observation.
List of people
Second, Relationship development.
Spending time with people
Example: Paul taking Timothy on missionary journeys
Third, coaching
Helping people.
Discern their calling
cultivate godly character
Increasing spiritual competency
Studying book of the bible/Christian book
Resources in my office
Illustration
Haven’t always been as excited
Sam Nelson
“Michael, who are you discipling?”
My response
LWBC
Interim youth pastor that process that the Lord made it clear to me that this was my life’s calling.
Wouldn’t be here today
All bc I was asked the simple question: “who are you discipling?”
I’ll ask the same question to you
Application:
David Platt: “Have you ever considered the fact that perhaps the greatest thing you might do with your life is to pour into a future leader?”
Are you discipling someone?
Have you ever?
Prayerfully think of some people
Write name down
Contact after service
Conclusion
Visualization:
Pick up the putter.
Reiteration:
Ask Wayne and Beth to come back to stage
Commit to the task
Allow His grace to empower you as you find someone to disciple you, and as you find someone to disciple yourself.
If thought of name, come down and seek the Lord
