The Overpowerer
The Overpowerer
El Sheddai:
El in hebrew means God
the most common interpretation of Shaddai today is “mighty,”
You would get God Almighty out of that
Some interpret Sheddai as sufficient
Either interpretation—mighty or sufficient—works for me, because the Almighty is the God who is enough
He is more than sufficient to meet any need
To nourish and satisfy
The name Shaddai appears 48 times in the Bible, seven times as "El Shaddai"
31 times alone in the book of Job
We first see if used in Genesis with Abraham
At that time He was called Abraham
1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless.
Almighty God:
El Shaddai
When he encountered God it drove him, he literally dove to the ground
That was his response
It wasn’t what’s up bro?
What happened to a culture of Honor?
Behold my covenant is with you:
Abram=exalted Father
Here he is at 99 and he’s been called exalted father his whole life
What kind of life that must’ve looked like
Every time they said his name it was a reminder of what He wasn’t
O cool Tell me about your family?
Meet my wife........And?
3 Then Abram fell on his face, and God talked with him, saying: 4 “As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of many nations. 5 No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you a father of many nations.
FOR I HAVE MADE YOU
7 Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your descendants I will give this land.” And there he built an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him.
Recap:
God reveals himself to Abram
Tells him to get out of his country
Tell him to go to Canaan
Abram has enough faith in God to travel =400 miles on foot to Canaan
Tells Him His descendants will inherit the land He’s in
The amount of Faith he had to have to pick up and move
He’s talking about Canaan or modern day Palastine abouts:
Abram is 75 here
There He built an alter
He built a place to remember God
Abraham at this point is where God had asked him to be
BUT
10 Now there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to dwell there, for the famine was severe in the land.
This is where the story goes off track a bit
He brings him all the way to the place He has for him
And circumstances arise
Instead of trusting in Yahweh
He takes matters into his own hands
You got me this far God but I think this is a far as you’ve seen LOL
11 And it came to pass, when he was close to entering Egypt, that he said to Sarai his wife, “Indeed I know that you are a woman of beautiful countenance. 12 Therefore it will happen, when the Egyptians see you, that they will say, ‘This is his wife’; and they will kill me, but they will let you live. 13 Please say you are my sister, that it may be well with me for your sake, and that I may live because of you.”
Now he really looks dumb
Elevated Father
Is on the wrong side of 50, single and about to lose his sister/Wife to the Egyptians
Again He takes matters into his own hands
Even when Abram had an encounter with God
He takes matters into his own hands and makes a mess of it
This is probably a 1-2 year stay in Egypt
We see for a short time in His life Yahweh is silent here
What does he do?
1 Then Abram went up from Egypt, he and his wife and all that he had, and Lot with him, to the South. 2 Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold. 3 And he went on his journey from the South as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai, 4 to the place of the altar which he had made there at first. And there Abram called on the name of the Lord.
I’m wondering if this was a call of repentance to God?
Then you have the whole Sodom and Gomorah debacle
1 After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.”
2 But Abram said, “Lord God, what will You give me, seeing I go childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”
God reminds Him of his promise
And Abraham calls Him Adonai
But Again he takes matters into His own hands
1 Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. And she had an Egyptian maidservant whose name was Hagar. 2 So Sarai said to Abram, “See now, the Lord has restrained me from bearing children. Please, go in to my maid; perhaps I shall obtain children by her.” And Abram heeded the voice of Sarai.
Don’t listen to your wife!
What would of happened if he had not gone to Egypt and just stayed in the place he was supposed to be?
Some of you might be in a dry place and you think, there must be something better in Egypt
I would much rather be in a dry place where called has called me, then dancing in the rain out of His will
Hagar the Egyptian gets pregnant
They soon realize that it’s not Abram who has the problem its Sarai
We are still to this day seeing a generational hatred that resulted from one man Trying to Help out God’s process
The Angel of the Lord visits Sarai
For sake of time we go back to
1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless. 2 And I will make My covenant between Me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly.” 3 Then Abram fell on his face, and God talked with him, saying: 4 “As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of many nations. 5 No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you a father of many nations. 6 I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you.
El Shaddai
God almighty
the all sufficient one
The one who needs no help
The one who take a man from a line of pagan worshipers
Who could very well have been a pagan worshiper himself before he had an encounter with God
2 And Joshua said to all the people, “Thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘Your fathers, including Terah, the father of Abraham and the father of Nahor, dwelt on the other side of the River in old times; and they served other gods. 3 Then I took your father Abraham from the other side of the River, led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his descendants and gave him Isaac.
And at 100 years old despite all the things that Abram did to help God, He has the child of promise Isaac
One of my favorite translations of El Shaddai is one who overpowers:
The one who creates nature
The one who sets the laws in motion
Is so great and mighty that he is able to make things happen contrary to nature in motion
Causes things to be not as though they were
A God who gave us the ability through JESUS AND HIS HOLY SPRIT TO OVERPOWER THE NEGATIVE IN OUR LIVES
We serve a God who:
Despite your past
What you were before
How you’ve acted
How you viewed yourself
14 that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
All of this has one pre-requisite:
A Faith in God
A Faith in Jesus
13 For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Put your trust in the Almighty God
That He was mighty enough to Raise Jesus from the dead
Alter Call
Want to receive the Baptism of the Holy Sprit
