Opening Statement

So many times we see people say, I am chosen, therefore I will do nothing. God chosen me therefore, I can sleep at home and still get salvation
Today we will study on the Book of Obadiah, and see what Prophet Obadiah say to the people of Jacob/Isreal and how two brothers problem became the problem of two great nations and into today.
Historic Context
Isaac, son of Abraham, and his Wife Rebecca had two twins, Jacob and Esau
Back during this time, Esau was the older brother and Jacob was the younger one.
Esau was liked by Isaac because Isaac likes the hunting spirit in him and the outdoor.
Jacob was liked by his mother because Jacob was not a person who likes what the father had.
Birthrights
The birthrights always goes to the oldest son during this time, and therefore it was Esau. The birthright
Gensis 25:29
Birthrights to the chosen people of God
what is birthright mean? In Hmong
Esau sold his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of soup
Esau did not care for his birth right because his life was greater
--- Application
--- How many of us are like Esau?
Be rich today to die tomorrow
Be millionaire today to die tomorrow
Be rich but bed ridden for rest of life
As we can see here, we value our life more than our faith just as Esau value his life more than his birthright
When Isaac was getting of old age, he told Esau to go and kill a wild animal and they have dinner together. and that is when Isaac will give the birthrights to Esau, but Rebecca got in the way and devise a plan to get it to Jacob. Jacob lie to his father and receive the birthright. This is where we start the hatred among each other. Jacob stole Esau birthrights.
Jacob became Isreal and started his nation, Canaanite
Esau became Edom and started his nation, land around Canaanite
Brother rivalry
Obadiah Vision
Explain Jacob land and Esau land
where does the book of Obadiah fit in time.
Fast forward to the people and Obadiah
The book of Obadiah breaks down into three sections.
Obadiah 1–9 CSB
The vision of Obadiah. This is what the Lord God has said about Edom: We have heard a message from the Lord; an envoy has been sent among the nations: “Rise up, and let’s go to war against her.” Look, I will make you insignificant among the nations; you will be deeply despised. Your arrogant heart has deceived you, you who live in clefts of the rock in your home on the heights, who say to yourself, “Who can bring me down to the ground?” Though you seem to soar like an eagle and make your nest among the stars, even from there I will bring you down. This is the Lord’s declaration. If thieves came to you, if marauders by night— how ravaged you would be!— wouldn’t they steal only what they wanted? If grape harvesters came to you, wouldn’t they leave a few grapes? How Esau will be pillaged, his hidden treasures searched out! Everyone who has a treaty with you will drive you to the border; everyone at peace with you will deceive and conquer you. Those who eat your bread will set a trap for you. He will be unaware of it. In that day— this is the Lord’s declaration— will I not eliminate the wise ones of Edom and those who understand from the hill country of Esau? Teman, your warriors will be terrified so that everyone from the hill country of Esau will be destroyed by slaughter.
What does God say to the Edomite?
- They are rich
-They build on high
-They are stronger
Verse 4 - watch them soar like an eagle
- But no matter what they are, God will bring them down
Application
-No matter how successful we get
No matter how rich we get
God can bring us down if we do not have the heart for him
what was the Edomite doing against the Israelite?
Obadiah 10–14 CSB
You will be covered with shame and destroyed forever because of violence done to your brother Jacob. On the day you stood aloof, on the day strangers captured his wealth, while foreigners entered his city gate and cast lots for Jerusalem, you were just like one of them. Do not gloat over your brother in the day of his calamity; do not rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their destruction; do not boastfully mock in the day of distress. Do not enter my people’s city gate in the day of their disaster. Yes, you—do not gloat over their misery in the day of their disaster, and do not appropriate their possessions in the day of their disaster. Do not stand at the crossroads to cut off their fugitives, and do not hand over their survivors in the day of distress.
What does Edomite do?
They rejoin when Isreal was struggling
they had a chance to love on another
but they came to cheer on the enemy
they may themselves look better than the people of Jacob
they gloated in themselves
being glad that their brother is falling
they would no help their people run from the enemies
they expose the location of where they are
Application
We celebrate when we see our brothers fail or struggle
We find the joy in saying we are better people
Instead of helping our brother or sister in christ, we expose them and expose their failures
BUT.....We should not compete for prestige or who ministry,
events- we compete
tithing -
what you do for God
compare to others,
Transition, rivalry is wrong,
Remind them that Jacob and Esau made up. Therefore the country should love on another.
Transition: rivalry among Christians is wrong because this is not the example that Jacob & Esau set.
Call back to when Esau & Jacob reunited in Genesis. They were reconciled. Esau no longer hated Jacob & welcome Jacob like a brother. He missed Jacob & loved Jacob. They no longer were rivals. They had no reason to compete for blessings or resources, because God had blessed both with enough. This was the example that Jacob & Esau set.
The Edomites & Israelites should have loved one another from then on.
Unfortunately their rivalry continued between their descendants all the way to Obadiah’s time.
Transition to final prophecy against Edom.
Obadiah 15–21 CSB
For the day of the Lord is near, against all the nations. As you have done, it will be done to you; what you deserve will return on your own head. As you have drunk on my holy mountain, so all the nations will drink continually. They will drink and gulp down and be as though they had never been. But there will be a deliverance on Mount Zion, and it will be holy; the house of Jacob will dispossess those who dispossessed them. Then the house of Jacob will be a blazing fire, and the house of Joseph, a burning flame, but the house of Esau will be stubble; Jacob will set them on fire and consume Edom. Therefore no survivor will remain of the house of Esau, for the Lord has spoken. People from the Negev will possess the hill country of Esau; those from the Judean foothills will possess the land of the Philistines. They will possess the territories of Ephraim and Samaria, while Benjamin will possess Gilead. The exiles of the Israelites who are in Halah and who are among the Canaanites as far as Zarephath as well as the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad will possess the cities of the Negev. Saviors will ascend Mount Zion to rule over the hill country of Esau, and the kingdom will be the Lord’s.
Obadiah prophecy fulfillment but…. Ever prophecy have two prophecy
One for that time and one for the future.
this one have been fulfill, and now we look at the one in the future.
King herald - king over Israelite - Jews
The day of the Lord
Judgement day
Application:
Christians need to show brotherly love to one another. (you can fill in the blanks)
We need to…
We need to…
We need to…
Exhortation:
Failure to show brotherly love leads to loss of inheritance
If you are not a true believer, you lose the opportunity to be saved
If you are a true believer you can’t lose your salvation
BUT… you lose out on all the blessings that God had intended for you
In this age (the present)
Fellowship, friendship, love, a good name, honor, etc…
In the next age (eternity)
Treasure in heaven
Crowns
Eternal glory
One the final day, God will judge all who does not love God people. This is beyond just the people of Jacob and Esau, but all.
We are not the people of Jacob, but was bought in through Christ, and therefore anyone who is against us, will suffer the same fate as the edomite
exhortation
add what xf say….
show brotherly love to others
forgive each other.
forgive
no grudge
Failure to love one another
lost your inehertience
true believer trust him
you loose the opportunity to be save
blessing in fellowship with one another.
if there no agape love, there no love
4. Eternity
no treasure in heaven
eternal glory
Conclusion
Jacob and Esau brother hatred
Jacob and Esau made up
the people did not and Christ brings all together
