Intro - Compassion on the Cast Down
When I was a little kid,
My mom watched my younger cousins
marty- give you an Idea of the type of kid he was
marty stuck legos up his nose.
true story----- dr had to have them removed.
one day , my mom picked marty up and threw out her back.
she was hunched over for months.
She was completely helpless
couldnt do anything.
not only was she in physical pain
but she was in emotional and spiritual pain.
today, we will learn about a woman who was crippled for 18 years.
and how her encounter with Jesus changed her life forever.
open your bibles to luke 13:10
Now He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. And behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bent over and could in no way raise herself up. But when Jesus saw her, He called her to Him and said to her, “Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity.” And He laid His hands on her, and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.

Jesus teaching on sabbath.
Sabbath-------Saturday- a jewish holy day of rest .
while Jesus was teaching on this sabbath day
He spots a woman who had a spirit of infirmity
explain- demonic spirit caused a physical disability.
specifically one- permenantly bent over
all disability not from demons.
sin in the world.
yet we can not deny that satan is the cause of a many disabilities in the mind and body.
I wouldnt call this demonic posession, but demonic opression.
she was a believer----daughter of abraham....in the synagouge
helpless and could not raise herself up
in the same way without God we can not help ourselves
And Jesus calls her to Himself ‘
proclaims she is loosed from her disability
Lays His comforting hands on her
and immediately she straightens up and praises God
This brings us to our first point
Satan will try to cast down your soul
Satan will try to cast down your soul
the disability that this woman had
made her life excidingly difficult.
Think about someone you know who has a disability
How hard is life for them.
On the surface many times they seem joyful on the outside
but what is going on in the secret place of the heart.
Satan has had his way with this woman for 18 years.
longer than most of you are alive.
Q. how does she live
eat, prepare meals,
who takes care of her?
no doubt her life was more physically demanding than yours.
but maybe you have something in common with her.
Q.Maybe your spirit has been cast down like hers?
satan has 2 main goals
prevent
discourage
But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.
satan blinding-preventing
satan also wants to discourage the believer
This is why we are told to take up the whole armor of God
above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
satan will be throwing darts
Q. Does satan have you cast down today?
this may be Satans work to discourage you in the faith.
or to prevent you from surrendering your life to Jesus.
I may never have my spine twisted so bad that I cant even look up
But I have had my spirit cast down in this way.
In that by my own strength I could not lift myself up.
Story-depressed, wondering what the purpose of life was
purpose was to know God, serve him, and be loved by Him
Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; For I shall yet praise Him, The help of my countenance and my God.
Being cast down in your soul takes on many forms
doubt
depression
anger
pain
many times it has do do with a person who has wronged you
Many times it has to do with your circumstances.
and sometimes you cant identify why your soul is cast down.
What has you cast down today?
disabled women
18 years she has been cast down
I am certain she had wrestled with the goodness of God
why are things are the way they are?
dear friend when you are in a season of discouragment
your asking why are things the way they are,
do not let your feelings dictate who God is.
The word of God dictates who God is.
Has a christian hurt you?
dont blame God----- that was sinful man
Give that man grace.
and trust in God
has evil come your way?
God is not evil ,
He has purpose in your suffering,, but is not the author of evil.
are your circumstances troubling you?
keep coming back to Gods house and word
even if it takes 18 years
we see the woman kept coming to the synagogue.
despite her bad circumstances
she kept her hope in God.
Vs 12 says when Jesus saw her , He called her to Him.
Jesus saw her------moved with compassion.
and healed her on the sabbath.
Self righteousness will lead to heartlessness
Self righteousness will lead to heartlessness
But the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath; and he said to the crowd, “There are six days on which men ought to work; therefore come and be healed on them, and not on the Sabbath day.”

we see God introduce sabbath very early in genesis
And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.
God created the world and everything in it in 6 days
on the 7th he rests.
and seperates it as a holy day.
He then commands the nation Israel to set the day apart for rest
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates.
Saturday was special to the jewish people.
in a similar way that Sunday is special to the Church.
however Sunday is not the christian sabbath.
the sabbath day has its fulfillment in Christ who becomes our sabbath rest.
but during this time
Christ had not yet fulfilled the law by His sacrifice.
So the laws regarding the sabbath had to be kept perfectly by Jesus
Many religious men added rules to this commandment.
This is what the ruler of the synagouge has done.
Now what is the opposite of compassion?
Indifference......heartlesness.

brings charge against Jesus for breaking sabath.
Jesus did not break the sabath.
sabath is to be seperated to God and made holy
and the holy of holies made a woman well bringing glory to God.
The self righteous attitude of the jewish leader
brought about a heartless reaction.
Q. What was the intention of God to command a sabbath days rest.
And He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.
Meaning God gave the sabbath as a gift of rest
not as a means of righteousness.
Every command given by God is for your good
and His glory.
The ruler missed the intention of the sabath
He used it to elevate mans righteousness
over Gods heart that she would be healed.
picture a starving child in africa-
ruler would have said wait until sunday to feed her.
God is compasionate with the cast down
God is compasionate with the cast down
The Lord then answered him and said, “Hypocrite! Does not each one of you on the Sabbath loose his ox or donkey from the stall, and lead it away to water it? So ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound—think of it—for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath?” And when He said these things, all His adversaries were put to shame; and all the multitude rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by Him.
Jesus answers the ruler -
Hypocrite-
(explain), say your this, but your really that
on the sabath you-untie donkey drink
Why? love your animals
permits this kind of work on the sabath day.
now if you take your ox out to the field to work the crops on the sabath
thats a different story.
but in the same way that they would loose an ox and lead it to water.
Jesus takes this daughter of Abraham
and He looses her from satans chains
and leads her to water
and this water is himself...
but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”
Jesus has compassion on this woman
He heals her
and she most certainly comes to faith in Jesus.
Jesus showed the compassion of our triune God throughout His ministry
When He saw the possessed He cast out demons
when He saw the disabled He healed them
when lazarus died He raised him back to life
jesus wept
Compassion- means to have mercy, to feel sympathy, to have pity.
Jesus has compassion on the cast down.
Jesus sympathizes with you.
if your cast down and in need
you need to know that Jesus cares about you.
When you weep, He weeps with you
When you struggle, His heart is experiencing the same thing with you
He feels your pain and He is compassionate with your circumstances.
Story mike - God feels my pain with me ------mike says praise God
There is a reality about this story
Jesus healed this woman
Does this mean that if your sick or disabled that Jesus will heal you in your lifetime?
No.
Many christians are disabled and never get healed miraculously.
Sometimes God does.
but physical healing is not the primary way of God showing his compassion.
Physical healing is an external picture of what God does to the person heart who puts his trust in Him.
Jesus was proving He was God when He was healing throughout His ministry.
He was establishing the message of salvation through Him alone.
and when you put your faith in Him
He Heals your spirit completely
mans heart is twisted and deformed by nature
when you trust in Jesus
He heals it completely.
I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
this is spiritual healing
this is regeneration.
And one day, every person who has recieved the healing of the heart
in this world
will get a new and glorified body
in the next.

we are all like this woman before we meet Christ
Spiritually speaking the human heart is cast down to the ground
unable to help ourselves
deformed and disabled.
Satan is after everybody
He has the unbelievers bound in chains
And he is continually taking shots to cast down your soul
Satan will also try to make you self righteous
thinking that you are better than everyone else
when in actuallity that type of judgment is a spiritual disability called pride.
while satan is heartless
Jesus is compassionate
But You, O Lord, are a God full of compassion, and gracious, Longsuffering and abundant in mercy and truth.
He is compassionate with you and with your brothers and sisters.
may this lead you to mimic the character of God.
Maybe you have never experienced the compassion of Jesus for yourself?
You may feel like your spirit is cast down and disabled.
Jesus is full of compassion and welcomes you to be healed spiritually today.
