Introduction

Chapters 9-11 deal with a different kind of opposition

Not from individual cities

But from NUMEROUS cities

Chapter 10: 5 Southern Kings

Chapter 11: Northern Kings

Israel’s reputation had spread throughout the land

The Canaanites (2:9-11, 5:1) had heard of their victories and their hearts “melted”

But now, in contrast, there is a LACK of fear because they’ve joined forces to attack Isreal!

Why? Possibly because they heard of their defeat at Ai

What Happened? Achan sinned

Deut 28:15 “15 “But it shall come about, if you do not obey the Lord your God, to observe to do all His commandments and His statutes with which I charge you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you:”

Deut 28:25 “25 “The Lord shall cause you to be defeated before your enemies; you will go out one way against them, but you will flee seven ways before them, and you will be an example of terror to all the kingdoms of the earth.”

The gibeonites expressed the same heart david did in Psalm 84:10

10 For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand outside.

I would rather stand at the threshold of the house of my God

Than dwell in the tents of wickedness.
