Recalculating Lordship
Matthew 7:21-23
INTRODUCTION
ILL– Abscessed front teeth- pretend everything is OK
feel the pain- convince self it isn’t that bad- it will go away.
I go to the dentist– (sound)
So bad by the time I get to dentist the infection has so much pressure he can’t numb.
Pretending everything is OK has serious consequences.
10 years ago--50% of Americans claim to be born again Christians.
(More called themselves Christians)
John McArthur and Billy Graham- less than 50% of Church members.
America was deceiving itself.
Today— growing number of Americans are known as none’s.
They mark “none” when asked about religion.
However, they all believe they are going to heaven.
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’
23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
6 Characteristics of the Deceived.
6 Characteristics of the Deceived.
1. Public Profession
1. Public Profession
“Lord, Lord”= Word for God- address Him as one true God.
Double- spirit of intense zeal- demonstrated devotion.
Jesus is referring to people who have made a public profession of faith for Him.
They are fervent Christian leaders who have claimed to do a lot for Christ.
Publicly zealous- yet deceived.
ILL– “I’m a bird”
I can yell loud as much as I want that I’m a bird- does not make me a bird.
Birds have feathers and fly– I don’t.
2. Surprised Judgment
2. Surprised Judgment
“That day”= day of judgment
“Not everyone”, “many”= shows a separation
Some are genuine and many are not.
“It is appointed unto man once to die and then the judgment.”
Matt 25– Jesus shares of separation of the sheep and goats.
The goats are surprised they are rejected.
3. Good Works (22)
3. Good Works (22)
Prophecy, cast out demons, miracles
Yet true heart is evil.
True fruit of their life is lawlessness.
ILL– TV Evangelists
Many of these false prophets have been revealed for what they truly are.
Jim Baker- first to embrace people with AIDS. First to start Christian news show. First to launch Christian satellite. And First to start Christian theme park.
Doing good things will not get you to heaven.
ILL– Getting into Disney World
Beg the gate keeper all you want.
They won’t let you in without a ticket.
The price has to be paid.
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
4. No Intimate Relationship
4. No Intimate Relationship
“I never knew you”
To know= intimate relationship
Man and wife
God and the Jews
Jesus and the Bride/church
The Good Shepherd knows His sheep and the sheep know Him.
They hear His voice and follow Him.
5. Eternally Separated
5. Eternally Separated
“Depart from me.”= get away from me- I can’t stand to look at you.
Final sentence to hell.
41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
15 And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
6. Habitual Sin
6. Habitual Sin
“Practice lawlessness”= a regular action/ pattern of life.
We all sin after salvation
The deceived are those who continue to live in sin with no desire to repent.
They do not practice the Sermon on the Mount
Life shows lawlessness not characteristics of the saved.
CONCLUSION
One characteristic of the saved= “does the will of the Father”
Fruit- you will know them by their fruit
Salvation and obedience go together.
9 And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him,
A person not willing to repent of present sins probably never has been forgiven of previous sins.
8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
A person living in sin without remorse or repentance cannot be saved.
9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality,
10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
5 For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.
6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.
Do not be Deceived!
Do not be Deceived!
Is Jesus Truly Lord?
