During World War II, Father [Maximilian] Kolbe was imprisoned in the Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz, where he became an inspiration to many of those incarcerated with him. One day a group of prisoners were ordered to parade, and a number were picked out for execution. One of them shouted out that he was a married man with children, and at this Father Kolbe stepped forward and asked if he could take the condemned man’s place. His offer was accepted by the authorities, and he was placed in an underground cell, where he was left to die of starvation. During his final days those who passed by the cell heard him praying and singing hymns.
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
Atonement - means theres was a violation and this is the payment for that violation.
Atonement signifies the means by which the sins of individuals and of humanity in general are “paid for” or “erased”.
So Christ is the atonement. He’s the means under which mans sins are erased.
“Christ Himself is our atonement and the Father is pleased with His sacrifice thats propitiation”
Substitution is the belief that Christ died in our place.
The substitutionary death of Christ is indeed the gospel theres no gospel apart from it.
Essentially Christ died in our place.
Substitutionary death diverts the punishment that rightfully belongs to the sinner and God places it upon Himself.
This is “penal substitution” - the moral law says guilty and thats a verified truth but Christ takes on that guilt upon Himself.
What The Sons death accomplishes?
The death of Christ assures us of the love of God towards the sinner.
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
16 By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
9 In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him.
Love was fully displayed at the cross.
The fact that God loves us this much should motivate the believe to seek Him.
To live for Him
15 and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.
1 Peter 2:11-25
2. The death of Christ is said to be a redemption or ransom paid to the holy demands of God for the sinner and to free the sinner from just condemnation.
The holy demands of God that we weren’t able to meet.
Christ paid our ransom.
Did you know that sin has a price. and that price is death.
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
16 The labor of the righteous leads to life, The wages of the wicked to sin.
One of the words that promote substitutionary death . Is Ransom
28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
6 who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time,
“Ransom for” that word “for” means “instead of” or “on behalf of”
So He died instead of you.
Ransom - what is given in exchange (as payment) for the release of someone held captive.
Its the price of relief.
The death of Christ was a necessary penalty which He bore for the sinner (Rom. 4:25; 2 Cor. 5:21, Gal. 1:4; heb.9:28 ).
In the NT three important greek words of used to express this idea of ransom.
(1) agorazo, meaning "to buy in the market" (agora means "market"). Man in his sin is considered under the sentence of death (John 3:18-19 ; Rom. 6:23), a slave "sold under sin" (Rom. 7:14 ), but in the act of redemption purchased by Christ through the shedding of His blood (1 Cor. 6:20 ; 7:23;
18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin.
20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.
23 You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men.
(2) exagorazo, meaning "to buy out of the market" which adds the thought not only of purchase but removal from sale (Col. 3:13; 4:5; Eph. 5:16; Col. 4:5), indicating that redemption is once for all
3) lutroo, "to let loose" Or "set free" (Luke 24:21; Titus 2:14, | Pet. 1:18). The same idea is found in the noun form lutrosts (Luke 2:38; Heb. 9:12), another similar expression epoiesen lutrosin (Luke 1:08), and another form used frequently, apolutrosis, indicating freeing a slave (Luke 21:28; Rom. 3:24; 8:23; 1 Cor. 1:30; Eph. 1:7, 14;
4:30; Col. 1:14; Heb. 9:15; 11:35).
“The concept of redemption accordingly includes the purchase, removal from sale, and the complete freedom of the ransomed individual through the death of Christ and the application of redemption by the Holy Spirit.”
3. The death of Christ not only redeemed and propitiated a holy God, but provided the basis by which the world was reconciled unto God.
The Greek word katallasso, meaning to reconcile," has the thought of bringing God and man together by thoroughly changing man. It appears in various forms frequently in the New Testament (Rom. 5:10-11, 11:15;
10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.
11 And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.
15 For if their being cast away is the reconciling of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?
11 But even if she does depart, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband. And a husband is not to divorce his wife.
7:11; 3 Cor. 5:18.20; Eph. 2:16; Col. 1:20-21). The rendering in Romans 5:11, where it is translated "atonement in the King James Version, should be translated "reconcilation."
- The concept in reconciliation is not that God changes, but that His relationship to man changes because of the redeeming work is Christ.
- Man himself is forgiven, justified, and raised spiritually on the level where he is reconciled to God.
- The thought is not that God is reconciled to the sinner, that is, adjusted to a sinful estate, but rather that the sinner is adjusted to God's holy character.
- Reconciliation provisionally is for the entire world, just as God redeemed the whole world and is the propitiation for the sins of the whole world (2 Cor. 5:19; 2 Pet. 2:1; I John
2:1-2). So complete and far-reaching is this marvelous provision of God in redemption, propitiation, and reconciliation that the Scriptures state that God is not now imputing sin unto the world (2 Cor. 5:18-19; Eph. 2:16; Col. 2:20).
In the OT the sacrifices where temporal. They covered the sin for a season but the atonement was weak in that it was Gods forbearance that passed over sins in times passed. Romans 3:25 .
What the Sons death accomplishes
This imagery of suffering and dying for others connects Christ’s death to the Suffering Servant of Isaiah 53,
Subsituationary passage who was “wounded for our transgressions … [and] bruised for our iniquities” (Isa 53:5 KJV).
Important for views of atonement in which Christ’s death is a substitution that atones for human sin.
