Lets turn to our text.
Paul just gave an incredible sermon. He started with God delivering Israel out of bondage from the Egyptians, he tied it in with King David correlated it with Jesus and ended it with this:
Acts 13:38 (NKJV)
38 Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through this Man is preached to you the forgiveness of sins;
What does it mean for me that my sins are forgiven?
Forgiveness is the wiping out of an offense from memory; it can be effected only by the one affronted. Once eradicated, the offense no longer conditions the relationship between the offender and the one affronted, and harmony is restored between the two.
One of the greatest needs for humanity is forgiveness because forgiveness eradicates guilt .
I don’t believe in the premise that I can forgive myself.
That means I will have to be the grounds under which I set my our morality.
So invariably I’m in the place of God. God sets the standard of right and wrong He’s the moral law giver. If I become the standard of right and wrong I have the ability to forgive myself.
But if God is the standard He is the one that sets it and the one whom I seek forgiveness because I’ve violated it.
I don’t have no moral backing under which I can forgive myself unless the morality is something that I come up with our more
Forgiveness is apart of the character of God.
Exodus 34:6–7 NKJV
6 And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, 7 keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.”
What enables God to forgive because its apart of His nature.
Jonah 4:2 NKJV
2 So he prayed to the Lord, and said, “Ah, Lord, was not this what I said when I was still in my country? Therefore I fled previously to Tarshish; for I know that You are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, One who relents from doing harm.
Jesus is compassionate, He relents from doing harm.
He’s not vengeful, He’s not like man.
When someone wrongs us we wait for opportunities to get back at them.
Like we are praying on the downfall of others.
Even when we get promoted we look for ways to provoke jealousy. Though we won’t out right say it because of false humility.
Or you front load all your accomplishments knowing they really don’t make you happy.
But forgiveness means you been released of your sin the consequence, the guilt, the condemnation, the shame. When Christ forgives He forgives to the uttermost.
What enables Gods forgiveness ? The blood of Christ
Matthew 26:28 NKJV
28 For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
Acts 2:38 NKJV
38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Colossians 1:14 NKJV
14 in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.
Ephesians 1:7 NKJV
7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace
Jesus forgiveness is different He offers us this forgiveness with no reciprocation in mind.
Mans forgiveness has conditions. If you do this and this I will forgive.
Jesus forgiveness is free
Romans 8:32 NKJV
32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?
We where did in our trespasses and sins . Theres no reciprocation. we couldn’t pay Him for forgiveness because we where died lol
Colossians 2:13 NKJV
13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses,
Gods desire is that we offer forgiveness to others the same way Eph 4:32
Ephesians 4:32 NKJV
32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.
Acts 13:39–41 NKJV
39 and by Him everyone who believes is justified from all things from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses. 40 Beware therefore, lest what has been spoken in the prophets come upon you: 41 Behold, you despisers, Marvel and perish! For I work a work in your days, A work which you will by no means believe, Though one were to declare it to you.’ ”
Acts 13:42–43 (NKJV)
42 So when the Jews went out of the synagogue, the Gentiles begged that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath.
43 Now when the congregation had broken up, many of the Jews and devout proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.
They where favorably impressed by what Paul said.
Pauls message was to continue and rely on the grace of God.
Its not clear if everyone was saved at this point but he told them to continue .
You heard the message of salvation so continue in it.
Acts 11:23 (NKJV)
23 When he came and had seen the grace of God, he was glad, and encouraged them all that with purpose of heart they should continue with the Lord.
Acts 14:22 (NKJV)
22 strengthening the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and saying, “We must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of God.”
Continue in the grace of God.
I remember I went to a PAstor about a issue I deemed to be serious and that Pastor told me “you don’t need me you need God and walked away.”
Also one time I went in his office about a curtain subject, asked me did I talk to God I said no he said talk to Him first then talk to me.
Acts 13:44–45 NKJV
44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city came together to hear the word of God. 45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy; and contradicting and blaspheming, they opposed the things spoken by Paul.
The whole city came together to hear the word of God
Acts 13:46–47 NKJV
46 Then Paul and Barnabas grew bold and said, “It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken to you first; but since you reject it, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles. 47 For so the Lord has commanded us: ‘I have set you as a light to the Gentiles, That you should be for salvation to the ends of the earth.’ ”
The deliberate rejection of God lies at the heart of human sin. It is seen in rebellion against God’s authority, purpose and instruction and results in the rejection of God’s servants and, ultimately, in the rejection of his Son.
Matthew 23:37 NKJV
37 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!
