Intro

I want to base my message today on Colossians 3. We always hear that word tossed around in our service, specially if you have been a part of the Christian Academy on Sunday mornings, you’ve at one point or another have heard of this word. But what is it, at times I feel as though we get to a point where, if we are not careful, we could start using biblical terms without biblical mean or a biblical interpretation, so what ends up happening is that these biblical truths start turning into cliches. The reality is that Santification is Gods will for our life’s. Between the time of our salvation at the very moment we were regenerated to the moment we see out Lord in heaven, the will of God is for us to be sanctified.
1 Thessalonians 4:3 NASB 2020
For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality;
Its a very important doctrine to get right, and it’s if very important to the Lord that we are progressively sanctified, so much that he willed it to be so. It should also be important to us.
Colossians 3:1–10 NASB 2020
Therefore, if you have been raised with Christ, keep seeking the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on the things that are above, not on the things that are on earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory. Therefore, treat the parts of your earthly body as dead to sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. 6 For it is because of these things that the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, 7 and in them you also once walked, when you were living in them. 8 But now you also, rid yourselves of all of them: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene speech from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, since you stripped off the old self with its evil practices, 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created it—

Set Up

As we get familiar with the Aspotle Paul’s writing. We are going to notice that before he introduces correction in behavior, he fist address the doctrinal . We find that in this letter specifically (Chapter 1&2) he demonstrates powerfully the supremacy and the sufficiency of the lord Jesus Christ. On Chapter 2 he lays out the realities of His person, is devine glory, that he is God in human flesh, his atoning work , he has demonstrated that all who are believers in him are complete in Him. That in him we have everything that we need to feel adequate. We don’t need vision, angels, rituals, or human wisdom and practices. That we have now died and risen with Christ, and we are now a new creature. In Christ we are complete.

Therefore

As we come to chapter 3 we find another Characteristic of Paul’s writings, and that is the “Therefore”. We find it at the beginning of verse 1, and at the beginning of verse 5. And thats particular of Paul. He introduces doctrine(when he speak truth Christ or about us, and what it means to belong to God in Christ) to then the behavior or conduct of the believer. So because of who Christ is, and what Christ as done, and because of the fact that we are in Christ and complete in him, because if these realities, Therefore, we must live consistently with that identity, and there is a standard that is expected from life of the believer.
That as verse 17 says.
Colossians 3:17 NASB 2020
Whatever you do in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.
Very thing we do in word, everything that we do in deed should be consistent with who we are in Christ, and presented as thanks giving to God the Father. Heavenly minds Verses 1-4.

Earthly Reality

Now with those beautiful truths that Paul lays out for us, reality will tells, that’s fine. We need to do that, we long to do that, and for some of us we actually strive to do that. We have died with him, risen, and are seated with him, and we are empowered by the Holy Spirit to live righteously. Paul comes down to earth with the second “Therefore” in verse 5. Becasuse the reality is, is that if we are going to live this Christian life, we are going to have to deal with what remains on earth of our sinfulness.
And that will require a very urgent and consistent change in actions. (Eleborate)
Colossians 3:5–9 NASB 2020
