Believe
Believe
The Purpose of the Gospel is to Reveal so that we (The readers) will believe-
But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
It fits perfect in the Bible with is the revelation of God , His Will, and His redemption- for us who believe
God’s Word-
God’s Word-
John 11:1–16 (CSB)
Now a man was sick—Lazarus from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair, and it was her brother Lazarus who was sick. So the sisters sent a message to him: “Lord, the one you love is sick.”
When Jesus heard it, he said, “This sickness will not end in death but is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” Now Jesus loved Martha, her sister, and Lazarus. So when he heard that he was sick, he stayed two more days in the place where he was. Then after that, he said to the disciples, “Let’s go to Judea again.”
“Rabbi,” the disciples told him, “just now the Jews tried to stone you, and you’re going there again?”
“Aren’t there twelve hours in a day?” Jesus answered. “If anyone walks during the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world. But if anyone walks during the night, he does stumble, because the light is not in him.”
He said this, and then he told them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I’m on my way to wake him up.”
Then the disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will get well.”
Jesus, however, was speaking about his death, but they thought he was speaking about natural sleep. So Jesus then told them plainly, “Lazarus has died. I’m glad for you that I wasn’t there so that you may believe. But let’s go to him.”
Then Thomas (called “Twin”) said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s go too so that we may die with him.”
When God speaks it is powerful and effective-
Isaiah 55:11 (CSB)
so my word that comes from my mouth
will not return to me empty,
but it will accomplish what I please
and will prosper in what I send it to do.”
The word of God will accomplish the will of God, and the word will prosper
The word will prosper-
Jesus Said “This will not end in Death”
It didn’t matter what the people said
It didn’t matter what devil wanted to do
It didn’t even matter that Lazarus was already dead
When God Speaks, His word is prosperous
Creation Shows us just how powerful the word of the Lord is!
- God Simply said “let there be” and everything was accomplished.
All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness,
This Bible is the Word of God- It is sure and everything in it will be accomplished
God’s Timing-
God’s Timing-
He Stayed two more Days
He knew He was Dead (John 11:14)
Martha’s response “if you had been here” (John 11:21)
If you would have acted sooner
Mary’s response “If you had been here” (John 11:32)
But the purpose wasn’t so because Jesus didn’t care- It says “Jesus Love Martha, her Sister and Lazarus”
It wasn’t because He didn’t know- Jesus tells the disciple when Lazarus dies
It wasn’t because He couldn’t do the work required
It wasn’t because He was lacking
It was
John 11:4 (CSB)
When Jesus heard it, he said, “This sickness will not end in death but is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”
It was for the Glory of God to be revealed-
Jesus was gonna show them that He was the Resurrection and the Life
Jesus was gonna show them that death could stop the will of God
See the final enemy of Man is death- and Jesus was gonna reveal that even death Has no control of Him.
“But is for the Glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”
The worst situation imaginable was going to bring Glory to God, and glorify the Son of God.
It ends with Glory-God being glorified, Jesus being Glorified
Glorified- To bring praise- To attribute High rank and value; to Be of exceptional value
It looked bad but it ended in praise!
When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. Bethany was near Jerusalem (less than two miles away). Many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother. As soon as Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him, but Mary remained seated in the house.
Then Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother wouldn’t have died. Yet even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.”
“Your brother will rise again,” Jesus told her.
Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me, even if he dies, will live. Everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
“Yes, Lord,” she told him, “I believe you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who comes into the world.”
Having said this, she went back and called her sister Mary, saying in private, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.”
As soon as Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. Jesus had not yet come into the village but was still in the place where Martha had met him. The Jews who were with her in the house consoling her saw that Mary got up quickly and went out. They followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to cry there.
As soon as Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and told him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother wouldn’t have died!”
When Jesus saw her crying, and the Jews who had come with her crying, he was deeply moved in his spirit and troubled. “Where have you put him?” he asked.
“Lord,” they told him, “come and see.”
Jesus wept.
So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” But some of them said, “Couldn’t he who opened the blind man’s eyes also have kept this man from dying?”
Believe- and Trust
Believe- and Trust
449You believe in God for your soul. Believe in him about your property. Believe in God about your sick wife or your dying child. Believe in God about your losses and bad debts and declining business.—21.149
Charles Spurgeon
Believed Used Ninety-nine times in the Gospel of john-
Matthew used it 10 times
Mark used it 10 times
Luke used it 9 times
But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
What does it look like to believe?
Fatherless Abraham made up His mind to consider Himself a father- upon hearing God’s word to Him (Genesis 17:4-5)
Shadrach Meshach, and Abednego- Made up there minds that God was a deliver of those who walk righteously (Ps 34:19
One who is righteous has many adversities,
but the Lord rescues him from them all.
Daniel Believed would stop praying to the God who hears
Joshua held onto Gods promise so much that when He lost one out of seven fights he said “Whats the deal God?”
Ezekiel is told to “Prophesy to the bones”- To prophesy is to speak the Words of God-
Those bones responded to the Word of the Lord
Believe (John 11:15; 25-27; 40) - pisteuo (πιστεύω, 4100), “to believe,” also “to be persuaded of,” and hence, “to place confidence in, to trust,” signifies, in this sense of the word, reliance upon, not mere credence.11 Vine, W. E., Merrill F. Unger, and William White Jr. 1996. In Vine’s Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words, 2:61. Nashville, TN: T. Nelson.
Believe- the theme of John’s gospel: To reveal and to Believe
Reveal God, and Jesus Christ
Believe in Him and His works in turn equals receiving Salvation.
John 20:31
The whole Bible is Written so that WE will Believe
To believe is to walk towards the fire knowing that God still delivers
Martha sees the problem- “He has been dead four Days”
Its natural to see the problem and make it the outcome
But Jesus says, “Didn’t I say that is you believed you would see the glory of God?”
what Things have we allowed to end that God wanted us to Believe and have faith in?
The Words of Jesus are Life- and Powerful
The Words of Jesus are Life- and Powerful
John 11:43–44 (CSB)
After he said this, he shouted with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out bound hand and foot with linen strips and with his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unwrap him and let him go.”
Why does Jesus say, “Let Him God?”
Let-
Vine’s Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words Alone (Let Alone)
aphiemi (ἀφίημι, 863) signifies “to send away, set free”; also “to let alone,”
Even death and the Grave listen to Jesus.
What things has God spoken, what promises has he made to us, What part of His nature has He told us about,
Yet the circumstance have become the Outcome?
I am prepared to believe whatever it says, and to take it believing it to be the Word of God. For if it is not all true, it is not worth one solitary penny to me.
