Honoring God with Our Finances

Introduction:

Money is often seen as a taboo topic, but it plays a significant role in our lives. More importantly, it reflects what we truly value. As we dive into biblical money principles today, let's remember that money, in itself, is neutral. It's a tool that shows where our heart truly lies. Jesus talked about money because it exposes what we prioritize.

1. Live on a Written Budget

The Bible encourages us to be good stewards of our resources.
Proverbs 21:20 tells us
Proverbs 21:20 NIV
20 The wise store up choice food and olive oil, but fools gulp theirs down.
Living on a written budget is a practical way to be wise stewards of our finances.
It allows us to allocate our resources intentionally, ensuring that we prioritize what truly matters.

2. Avoid Debt

Proverbs 22:7 reminds us, "The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender."
Proverbs 22:7 NIV
7 The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender.
Debt can enslave us and hinder our ability to honor God with our money.
Avoiding debt is a step towards financial freedom, allowing us to serve God rather than be enslaved to financial obligations.

3. Foster High-Quality Relationships

1 Corinthians 15:33 advises us, "Do not be deceived: 'Evil company corrupts good habits.'"
1 Corinthians 15:33 NIV
33 Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.”
The company we keep can influence our financial decisions.
Surrounding ourselves with those who share our values and financial wisdom can help us make better choices with our money.

4. Save and Invest

Proverbs 21:20 also points out the importance of storing resources. Saving and investing wisely are biblical principles. We should prepare for the future while trusting in God's provision. It's not about hoarding but being responsible and forward-thinking.

5. Be Incredibly Generous

2 Corinthians 9:7 reminds us that "God loves a cheerful giver."
Generosity is a core principle of biblical stewardship.
When we give cheerfully and generously, we align our hearts with God's heart of love and generosity.

The Heart of the Matter

As we explore these principles, it's crucial to remember that the love of money can become a barrier to our obedience to God.
Money itself is neutral, but when it takes precedence over our love for God and others, it becomes a stumbling block.
Jesus warned, "No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money" (Matthew 6:24 NLT).
Our spending habits reveal our true priorities.
Are we serving God or money?

Conclusion

Money matters because it reflects our values and priorities.
As we journey through this series, let's reflect on how we use our money and whether it aligns with our faith.
Remember that you can seek wisdom from God and trusted individuals to make financial decisions that honor God.
In the upcoming days, we will delve deeper into these principles and discover how to steward our finances well, cultivate an abundance mindset, and reduce financial worries.
