Zechariah 1:18-2:13 Zooming in on what God Is going to do.
Intro: Maps where are we in the story of redemption,
3 Sermon in Zechariah, - 1 week return to me and I will return to you. Week 2. A vision of a better future.
Overview outline. PPT
It’s argued by many smart people that Zechariah has 8 visions at night, and he does, but I my humble opinion, it seems like they build on one another, and today it seems as if the 2-3 vision is also elaborate on what was said in the 1 vision. What will God do?
Let’s read.
Verse 18: Zechariah lifted his eyes and saw: 4 horns. Horns symbolize kingdoms and powers, pride.
Verse 19. Zechariah, still has the angle/messenger from God to ask so he does. The angle responds that the 4 horns are the ones that has scattered, Juda, Israel and Jerusalem. The powers and kingdoms that God used to Judge his people. Okay that is not so great news… But then, the next part of the vison, The Lord showed Zec 4 craftsmen… (Verse 20).
Zec asks what are they here for? The angel repeats what the horns are and that the craftsmen are going to terrify and cast down the horns, of the nations, that used their power to scatter Judah. A sign of deliverance and God judging the nations as he said in verse 15.
Then I Chapter 2 verse 1. Zec again lifts his eyes; and saw a man with a measuring line (EZ + RV 11) in his hand. He is going somewhere.
Verse 2 Zac asks where are you going? The man responds:” to measure Jerusalem width and length”.
In verse 3 the angle /the explaining one, comes forward and another angle comes forward to meet the explaining angle. And say in verse 4 “Run, say to that young man / measuring line: “Jerusalem shall be inhabited, so full og people and animals, that there will be no wall around it, it will be so very prosperous.
Verse 5. [What about safety? The wall was protection…] God declares “I will be a wall of fire all around, and I will be the glory in Jerusalem’s midst. (Don’t worry about the enemies, rebuild the temple God will protect).
Verse 6 Then a cry: Get up flee from the north, said the Lord, I have spread you North, East, West, South by the wind, because of your sins, but now Up Escape to Zion, (Part of Jerusalem) this is said to the exiles in Babylon, the north land, why
Verse 8 The Lord of hosts in his glory said he who touches you touches the apple of his eye, - a call back to Duet, 32:10 the song of Moses, that Juda is God’s chosen people that God will protect and keep.
Veres 9 explains how, Zec /God will shake his hand over the enemies, and they will be plunder for the people that served the nations, -Then you will know that the Lord of hosts ha send me…
Then now and then (Verse 10). Rejoice and sing worship, God the lord of hosts, because the Lord will come and dell in your midst, says the Lord. (That is why we worship).
In 11. There is hope for all the nations, they will join themselves to the Lord, and the Lord said they shall be my people. And I will dwell in your midst and that the Lord of hosts has sent me to you.. Jesus? How can the Lord send the Lord?
Veres 12 The Lord will inherit Juda and his portion in the holy land and will again choose Jerusalem.
Verse 13. Be quiet, all the earth, before God because he is getting up to come to us…
Okay, then what does that mean? First vision about the horns, and the craftsmen, God is going to judge the nations that scattered Judah, Isael and Jerusalem. Gods’ judgement, like the first vision talked about.
That might be encouraging for the oppressed people to know. (I the first sermon I talked about all the Good there is in God judging).
The 2 vision, a man with a measuring line, a sign that Jerusalem will be rebuild, not only rebuild but will overflow with people animal’s and riches, not only that God promises to be a wall of fire all around. – and that I will be the glory in her midst.
The next part a call to flee from the North, it is time to come back, Escape to Zion, don’t dwell with the daughter of Babylon. (It is time to come back to the land and to the Lord after the Lord scattered them). Then in 8-9 Zec say that God send him, and he will shake his hand, and the servants of Jews enemies shall plunder their masters. And then the people will know that the Lord of hosts has send Zac. – (Close present).
Response Therefore, sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion, because God promises to come dwell with his people in their midst, and not only with the Jews but many nations shall join themselves to the Lord – and shall be his people. God repats I will dwell in your midst. Then Zec, say you shall know that the LORD of hosts has sent me to you. (I am not lying this will happen).
2:12-13. Another affirmation that God will come and inherit Judah, and his land and will again choose Jerusalem, - so be silent, all flesh, (you might hear that God is on his way). God will do this.
Motivation to rebuild the temple…
Then what has this to do with us?
Well, what did you learn about God? And about Jesus? About Zac?
Blessings to all the nations…
God made man, to dwell with, sin causes, separation, and God makes away to come dwell with us again, we see shadows in the OT, comes with his glory to dwell in the tabernacle, later the temple, - even later in person, in Jesus Christ, the one that made it possible for God to dwell, with people again.
Gospel – Jesus made the way, life, death, resurrection. This is also what God said via Zechariah, I will judge your enemies, I will call you back to the land, Other nations will come to me and I will be their God, not only that I will again dwell in your mids.
A call to rejoice sing, in response to who God is and that he will come and dwell with his people.
Lonely, left by God, sin, shame wrath of God, - in Jesus we can be joined to be God children.
Protection, provision, a call to do Gods will, and trust Him even when oppression and injustices is very visible.
The light shines brightness in darkness, but if we hide in the dark, - stay in the north with our riches, and accomplishments, because we don’t know or trust that God will lead us, guide us in to true life in his son Jesus, we will not do what we were created to walk with him, by the power of the Holy Spirt.
