What happens?
What happens?
That Day
Christ has been teaching all day from the Seat of the Boat.
He has been teaching parables as He has started to remove the light from those who aren’t ready to listen.
After the public part of the ministry they go to shore and ask Jesus to explain the parables.
They are given knowledge of the mysteries of the Kingdom of God.
After the explanation, they are still surrounded by a large crowd...
He comes to shore, sends the multitude away, goes to house and explains to the disciples the message.
Then Jesus sent the multitude away and went into the house. And His disciples came to Him, saying, “Explain to us the parable of the tares of the field.”
As they prepare for his departure several followers profess there allegiance and are challenged at the cost of following Him.
Many have not left, they are outside waiting for Him.
Why were they not invited in?
They were not truly following Him.
Matthew 8:18-22 “And when Jesus saw great multitudes about Him, He gave a command to depart to the other side. Then a certain scribe came and said to Him, “Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go.” And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” Then another of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” But Jesus said to him, “Follow Me, and let the dead bury their own dead.””
Continual teaching about Salvation.
Counting the Cost. (Matt. 10:38 & Matt. 16:24)
He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.
b. The temptation of comfort, and the desire for wealth both interfere with following Jesus.
c. Christ always taught that there are only two ways, only two choices, only two groups. He teaching holds us in tension. We are either God’s alone, or we are still serving and worshiping ourselves.
The Crossing
They get into the boat to cross over and leave the crowd behind.
Other little boats follow.
The Problem
And suddenly a great tempest arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves. But He was asleep.
Suddenly, great tempest, arose (came down) ,
Luke uses the term (came down) as if it came from Heaven against them. (Looking at the wind and storm.) Matt 9:54 call down fire from heaven, Rev. 13:13 when the false prophet will call down fire.
Mark and Matthew use the term, arouse. (happened)
So the the boat was covered with the waves.
They are being drenched as the wave break over them, covering them and filling the boat.
This is no small tempest, but a raging storm that arrives almost before they can flee to shore.
But He was asleep. Mark adds “in the stern on a pillow”.
They are in danger, Christ is sleeping on a pillow.
They wake Him, crying for help.
Each gospel uses a little bit different start but ends with “we are perishing!”
General term for the one in charge, not the term Lord (kurios) Master / Slave.
Christ’s Response
Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.
He first rebukes both the wind and the sea.
Mark tells us what He said, Peace, the wind? Be still, the waves?
and the wind ceased and there was a great calm....
The Question they must answer.
But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?”
Their Response:
And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!”
Why does this happen?
Why does this happen?
After the feeding of the 5000 men, Mark tells us that the disciples did not understand the miracles of the loaves, because their hearts was hardened. (Mark 6:50-52)
They had watched miracles without end until it was common place and they didn’t even think and consider.
So Jesus walks on the water to them and they are amazed beyond measure.
So here as well, they had heard the parables and then the explanation and then the two followers who wanted to follow the Lord “in their own way”.
If any man demanded this obedience of us, we would be right in rejecting Him, But who was Jesus? He was God!
Fully man in His tiredness.
Yet never not Fully God with the Power of God withing Him.
Their view of Jesus needed to be brought back to true.
Jesus had become small to them. He needed to be God.
God will not take a lower place than what He deserves.
For us.
It is recorded in 3 of the gospels alone with the parables.
It isn’t an add on, but a thought to challenge us.
Are our own hearts too hard to hear what was said?
Who is the One who taught?
Will we listen to Him with a heart yielded to Him?
Will we count our lives as lost for the Kingdom of God, following Him?
What can I learn from this?
What can I learn from this?
There are others following us as we follow Christ. (other little boats). What we do matters. We are responsible for how we lead others.
Christ will not take any other place than Lord of our lives.
Trails might come to make us cry out to God. To help us grow.
This isn’t from a lack of care, or a failure to predict or protect.
It is actually a loving father helping us to cry out to Him, to allow us to see and to have our hearts softened.
May we remember to worship Christ. Be Still My Soul:
Be still, my soul: the Lord is on your side
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain
Leave to thy God to order and provide
In every change He faithful will remain
Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heavenly friend
Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.
Be still, my soul: the waves and wind still know
His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below
