THE WAR INSIDE

Romans 7:13 CSB
Therefore, did what is good become death to me? Absolutely not! But, sin, in order to be recognized as sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that through the commandment, sin might become sinful beyond measure.
The problem must be recognized in order to be fixed.
Have you ever seen car crash tests?
Who to they do these test?
They need to recognize any problems in order to fix them.
The law does the same thing for us. It allow us to recognized the problem in order to fix it.
Romans 7:14 CSB
For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold as a slave under sin.
This is way it is so hard!!
slave under sin
The is right and I’m guilty
Romans 7:15–19 CSB
For I do not understand what I am doing, because I do not practice what I want to do, but I do what I hate. Now if I do what I do not want to do, I agree with the law that it is good. So now I am no longer the one doing it, but it is sin living in me. For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh. For the desire to do what is good is with me, but there is no ability to do it. For I do not do the good that I want to do, but I practice the evil that I do not want to do.
Paul says the quiet part out loud.
Paul openly share his struggle and the war within.
When we hear this I would take a guess to say that everyone here can identify with what Paul has share about his life.
“I do not understand what I am doing”
It seem as if we are fighting a losing battle, but Paul will share soon how to fight back.
Romans 7:20 CSB
Now if I do what I do not want, I am no longer the one that does it, but it is the sin that lives in me.
The physical is over coming the spiritual.
Paul isn’t saying it is not his fault.
Paul is saying that his desirer is not matching up with the new man he is in Christ.
Romans 7:21–23 CSB
So I discover this law: When I want to do what is good, evil is present with me. For in my inner self I delight in God’s law, but I see a different law in the parts of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and taking me prisoner to the law of sin in the parts of my body.
Waging war
Romans 7:24 CSB
What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?
Wretched = in the Greek is translate wretched and worn out through hard labor.
Way is it such a struggle?
“Who will rescue me from this body of death?”
Sometime it is hard to admit that we need rescue!
Romans 7:25 CSB
Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with my mind I myself am serving the law of God, but with my flesh, the law of sin.
Thanks be to GOD through Jesus Christ our LORD!!!
Paul share who is going to rescue him.
“from this body of death” In this time a punishment that was carried out was to chain a dead body to a person and make them live out their days like that.
Sometimes it feels like we are dragging our old self around try to break free.
Why does Paul end this verse the way he does?
The struggle doesn’t stop when we come to Christ but when we do HE fights on our behalf.
There is victory over sin in Christ and Christ alone.
This is way we need a daily relationship with Christ.
