Last weekend,
Sermon was:
“Why is Lordship necessary?”
2 things we discovered
1. Lordship settles the POSITION issue
2. Lordship settles the PERMISSION issue
1. POSITION ISSUE
1. POSITION ISSUE
who is going to be # 1
Who is going to be in control.
2. PERSMISSION ISSUE
2. PERSMISSION ISSUE
Does God have a right
to walk into my life
and take control of it?
What place should He have in it?
Today add
couple more reasons
Lordship is Necessary
3. PROFESSION ISSUE
3. PROFESSION ISSUE
The Lordship issue
settles the
PROFESSION issue
of my life.
Our Profession is
what we claim
(profess) to be.
I assume that
everyone here
professes to be
a Christian.
Or you wouldn’t be here.
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
Jesus says,
there is a profession issue.
People claim to
be Christians
but are not.
Lordship resolves
this problem.
In other words,
when we submit
to the Lordship of Jesus Christ,
it is no longer just talk,
but action.
It is no longer
nodding our head,
doing something else
but obedience.
It is no longer saying
“He is Lord”
with our lips,
it is saying
“He is Lord”
with our life.
Jesus teaches Lordship
yet two groups
surprised at teaching.
JESUS IS SURPRISED
JESUS IS SURPRISED
“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?
Jesus himself is
surprised at people
who make a profession
without living it.
Jesus is saying:
"How can you
keep calling me Lord?
you aren’t doing
what I’m telling you to do.”
He is saying,
“I’m surprised.
It doesn’t make sense.
How can I be your Lord,
if you don’t obeying me?”
Next verse give
the antedote for poison
of false profession
Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like:
3 Steps to Lordship
3 Steps to Lordship
1) Comes to me.
1) Comes to me.
Stage one,
recognize need
see brokenness
desire savior
come with
broken/humble heart.
2) Hear my words.
2) Hear my words.
Listen to
the truth.
He gives
solution to
all sin problems.
3) Acts upon them.
3) Acts upon them.
Choose to apply it
to your life!
While alive
Jesus had large crowds
followed him everywhere.
few were converted.
Just there
for entertainment
for excitement
for miracles
for community
not true Christians.
They frequently did
first two steps
come
listen
Rarely chose
3rd step.
As we can see,
third step is where
rubber meets road.
Proves the heart.
Other steps
you can do
with false impression.
Final step
you won’t do
unless sincere
2ND SURPRISE
2ND SURPRISE
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
PROFESSING CHRISTIANS ARE SURPRISED
PROFESSING CHRISTIANS ARE SURPRISED
What???
I thought we
would be saved.
but they are lost.
They came
They listened
They acted.
Why are they not saved?
They performed
external forms
for other to see.
But I was a deacon!
I visited the sick!
I helped at communion
I was a greeter
I came to church early
smiled
gave bulletins...
What is Jesus
teaching?
A. Saying the right words will not get me into heaven.
A. Saying the right words will not get me into heaven.
We can claim
what we want
doesn’t prove
spiritual condition
of the heart.
B. Doing good works will not get me into the heaven.
B. Doing good works will not get me into the heaven.
They are
doing right thing
but still lost.
Why?
external forms
for others to see
When others are not watching
true character is see.
C. Obeying God’s will. This will get you into heaven.
C. Obeying God’s will. This will get you into heaven.
Living the faith
while nobody is looking.
Earnestly seeking
God’s plan
(listening).
Choose to order
ever aspect of life
with God’s plan.
Billy Graham tells the wonderful story about a group of people—about a dozen—from a Southern state, decide to go to New York City to see the play My Fair Lady. They took a train up to New York City, got on to Broadway, but it was sold out. They had bragged to all their friends back home, and now all of a sudden, they can’t see it, and they were a little bit discouraged. As they were standing outside the theater, the people are coming out of the previous performance, were throwing their ticket stubs down. And this group of 12 gets an idea. They gather up all the ticket stubs that they can. And they bought the program book of My Fair Lady, and the musical recording of all the numbers, and they went back to their rooms, and they learned all the numbers. And they went back to their home and they showed the ticket stubs, and they showed the programs, and they sang the songs. But, oh the emptiness and the hollowness as they tried to say something and be something, that deep down they knew they hadn’t seen.
Many Christians today
playing the same game!
Learning the songs,
memorizing the program
claiming to hold the ticket stub
but still never seen Christ.
S.M. Lockeridge, said there are 3 classes of people.
Those who neither call Him Lord, nor do the things He says.
Those who call Him Lord, but do not do the things He says.
Those who call Him Lord, and do the things that He says.
Today we must ask:
what category do I belong?
Two Builders
Two Builders
After Jesus says
we must act upon
what He says,
parable 2 builders:
“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”
Jesus is carpenter
building illustration
One builder
harder work
build on rock!
satisfied in end
One builder
takes shortcuts
build on sand
leads to disappointment
Every Christian Life
fits into one category
or the other.
We Choose!
What is difference
between two options?
Obedience.
Remember:
EITHER GOD IS LORD OF ALL, OR HE IS NOT LORD AT ALL.
EITHER GOD IS LORD OF ALL, OR HE IS NOT LORD AT ALL.
Lordship settles the position issue
Lordship settles the position issue
Who is going to be # 1?
Lordship settles the permission
Lordship settles the permission
Who has a right to control my life?
Lordship settles the profession issue
Lordship settles the profession issue
Who is going to enter God’s kingdom?
Finally:
#4. Lordship settles the possession issue
#4. Lordship settles the possession issue
Who owns the things in my life.
What does God own?
Firstly, Me.
1. He owns me.
1. He owns me.
Before I can talk
about the things
in my life,
must talk about me.
God owns me!
for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
He owns me.
for 2 reasons.
1. He created me.
2. Through the cross, redeemed me.
I am twice His.
He made me.
He bought me
(with His own life).
He has total
sovereignty of my life.
He can do anything with me.
2. He owns my possessions.
2. He owns my possessions.
Psalm 24:1 (ESV)
The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein,
Dennis the Menace walking out of church one morning, a shock of horror on his mother’s face and embarrassment on his dad’s face as the little guy looks up at the pastor and says, ‘‘What are you going to do with the dollar my dad gave you today?”
Dennis had problem.
Same problem
many of us have.
Dennis thought
what his dad had,
was his dad’s.
It is not his dad’s.
It never was.
It is all God’s!
Psalm 24:1 “The earth is the Lord’s, and EVERYTHING in it...”
When we realize this,
tithes and offerings
become easy.
It’s His
return 10% to him.
graciously give him more
He lets me keep
all the rest
for his purposes!
Juan Carlos Ortiz’s book, The Call to Discipleship, he says
“The bible says the kingdom of God is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he finds a pearl of real worth, he sells everything he has to buy the pearl. Now I understand that Jesus is the pearl of great price and we as humans are the merchants. So when we find Jesus it costs man everything. Jesus has happiness, joy, peace, healing, security, eternity. Man marvels at such a pearl and says, Oh, I want that pearl. How much does it cost? The seller says, It costs dearly. Well, how much? It is very expensive. Well, do you think I can buy it? Well of course, anybody can. How can anybody buy it if it is expensive? The seller says, it costs everything you have. Therefore, everybody can buy it. They just have to give God everything. OK, I’ll buy it. Well, what do you have? Well I have $10,000 in the bank. OK, He’ll take that. What else do you have? Well, not much. I have a few dollars in my pocket. How much? Well, $30 - $40 - $120. OK, that’s fine. What else do you have? Well, I don’t have anything else, that is all. Where do you live? Well, I live in my house. Oh, He’ll take that too. You mean the house? If He has my house, I suppose I’ll have to sleep in the garage. Oh, He’d like to have that one also! Well, If I gave Him the garage, I’ll have to sleep in my car! How many do you have? Two. Good, He’ll take both of them. Wow! You’ve taken everything. I have nothing left. Well, are you alone in the world? No. I have a wife and 2 children. Oh, He’ll take that too, sir. You mean, He is going to take my wife and 2 kids? I have nothing else. I’m alone. I’m left. Oh; He’ll take you too. Everything becomes His. Wife, children, house, garage, cars, money, clothing, everything. And you too. Now, you can use all those things, but don’t forget who owns them. When I need any of those things you are using, you must give them back without hesitation, because they are mine. They are not yours.
EITHER GOD IS LORD OF ALL, OR HE IS NOT LORD AT ALL.
EITHER GOD IS LORD OF ALL, OR HE IS NOT LORD AT ALL.
If you asked me,
what is greatest test
of Lordship in life?
Easy...
God answered it:
Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.
God says,
test me!
Greatest test
of Lordship is:
possessions.
How we use those
proved truth of
where heart is.
It’s a great story. It is about Ivan the Great. 15th century Russian Czar. In fact the Soviet Union as we have known it, was basically put in place by Ivan the Great. He was a warrior. He conquered kingdoms. In fact, he was too busy battling to have a wife. His counselors became concerned and said; you’ve got to get married because you need an heir to the throne. And Ivan the Great said, I want to do battle, you go find a wife. So they did! They went down to Greece and they found the daughter of the King of Greece. Beautiful, beautiful girl. And they said, We found the wife for you. But there is one problem. If you are going to marry her, you have to be Greek Orthodox. Ivan the Great said, I can be Greek Orthodox. Now the king of Greece was thrilled, because that meant that Ivan the Great wasn’t going to take his territory. So they sent a tutor up, not only for Ivan the Great to become Greek Orthodox, but for his 500 soldiers, the closest men around him. Finally they went down to Greece for the marriage, but before the marriage they had to be baptized into the Greek Orthodox Church. So they waded out into the Mediterranean Sea. There are 500 soldiers walking into the water, with their medals and armor. And they got into the water. And all of a sudden the King of Greece says, we’ve got a problem. The problem was, in the Greek Orthodox Church, you could not be a warrior and be a member of the Greek Orthodox Church. So they had a hasty called diplomatic meeting while everyone was in the water. How are we going to work this out? And they came up with a very simple answer. When the Greek Orthodox priest baptized them; right before they immersed them, the soldiers all pulled out their swords and put them high in the air, and they put their arm which they used for their sword high in the air, and never immersed it, and put the rest of their body under the water. And they had, what history has called, the unbaptized arm.
Brothers and Sisters
you don’t want that
unbaptized body part.
Remember:
HE IS EITHER LORD OF ALL, OR HE IS NOT LORD AT ALL.
HE IS EITHER LORD OF ALL, OR HE IS NOT LORD AT ALL.
