One of the major problems with the Body of Messiah’s perspective of the angry, vindictive, judgmental G-d of the Old Testament vs the loving, gracious, merciful G-d of the New Testament is that the average believer in Yeshua has lost the reverence, fear, and awe of the Almighty G-d.
Principle: Our discipleship should be rooted in a holy fear of the L-rd, not in terror of consequences.
(Repeat)
Parasha Nitzavim-Vayelekh 5783
“You are standing today, all of you, before Adonai your God—the heads of your tribes, your elders, your officials, all the men of Israel,
your children, your wives, and the outsider within your camp (from your woodchopper to your water carrier).
Each of you is to cross over into the covenant of Adonai your God that He is cutting with you today, and into His oath.
“This is in order to confirm you today as His people. So He will be your God, just as He promised you and just as He swore to your fathers—to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob.
Not with you alone am I cutting this covenant and this oath,
but with whomever is standing here with us today before Adonai our God and with whomever is not here with us today.
Parasha Nitzavim-Vayelekh 5783
“Now when someone hears the words of this oath and in his heart considers himself blessed, thinking, ‘Shalom will be mine, even though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart’—thus sweeping away the moist with the dry—
Adonai will be unwilling to forgive him. For then the anger of Adonai and His jealousy will smoke against that person. So all the oath that is written in this scroll will settle on him, and Adonai will blot out his name from under the heavens.
Adonai will single him out from all the tribes of Israel for calamity, according to all the oaths of the covenant written in this scroll of the Torah.
Parasha Nitzavim-Vayelekh 5783
Principle: Our discipleship should be rooted in a holy fear of the L-rd, not in terror of consequences.
Parasha Nitzavim-Vayelekh 5783
“See, I have set before you today life and good, and death and evil.
What I am commanding you today is to love Adonai your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His mitzvot, statutes and ordinances. Then you will live and multiply, and Adonai your God will bless you in the land you are going in to possess.
But if your heart turns away and you do not listen, but are drawn away and bow down to other gods and worship them,
I tell you today that you will certainly perish! You will not prolong your days on the land, where you are about to cross over the Jordan to go in to possess.
“I call the heavens and the earth to witness about you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Therefore choose life so that you and your descendants may live,
by loving Adonai your God, listening to His voice, and clinging to Him. For He is your life and the length of your days, that you may dwell on the land that Adonai swore to your fathers—to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob—to give them.
Parasha Nitzavim-Vayelekh 5783
“Now therefore, fear Adonai and worship Him in sincerity and in truth. Get rid of the gods that your fathers had worshipped beyond the River and in Egypt, and worship Adonai.
If it seems bad to you to worship Adonai, then choose for yourselves today whom you will serve—whether the gods that your fathers worshipped that were beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will worship Adonai!”

Principle: Our discipleship should be rooted in a holy fear of the L-rd, not in terror of consequences.
Parasha Nitzavim-Vayelekh 5783
“So now, O Israel, what does Adonai your God require of you, but to fear Adonai your God, to walk in all His ways and love Him, and to serve Adonai your God with all your heart and with all your soul,
to keep the mitzvot of Adonai and His statutes that I am commanding you today, for your own good?
Behold, to Adonai your God belong the heavens and the highest of heavens, the earth and all that is in it.
Only on your fathers did Adonai set His affection to love them, and He chose their descendants after them—you—from all the peoples, as is the case this day.
Parasha Nitzavim-Vayelekh 5783
Holy fear:
Hebrew- Yarei
Greek- Phobos
Now on that same day in the evening, He says to them, “Let’s cross over to the other side.”
After leaving the crowd, they take Him along in the boat, just as He was. And other boats were with Him.
A great windstorm arises, and the waves were rushing into the boat. The boat was beginning to fill up.
But Yeshua was in the back of the boat, sleeping on a pillow. They wake Him up and say to Him, “Teacher, don’t you care that we are perishing?”
So He woke up and rebuked the wind. And He said to the sea, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind stopped, and it became totally calm.
And He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Even now you have no faith?”
They were struck with awe and said to one another, “Who is this? Even the wind and the sea obey Him!”
In verse 40 Yeshua accuses the disciples of being afraid, the Greek word used here is the word deilos, which is a fear of loss—loss of life, fear of something dangerous or deadly, etc…
Whereas, in verse 41 Yeshua says as is translated here, “they were struck with awe…” The Greek word used here also means fear, but it is the word phobos which is synonymous with the Hebrew word Yarei. This is a reverent fear, a holy fear.
Parasha Nitzavim-Vayelekh 5783
So Messiah’s community throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had shalom and was built up. Walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Ruach ha-Kodesh, it kept multiplying.
This is after Paul comes to faith, after those that heard of the atrocities he was guilty of against the Body of Messiah heard about his faith in Yeshua and witnessed his teaching in Yeshua’s Name.
They were walking in phobos (holy fear) and they were comforted in the Ruach HaKodesh, which Yeshua says in John 15:26 would come to be our helper, our comforter.
Principle: Our discipleship should be rooted in a holy fear of the L-rd, not in terror of consequences.
