Do You Love Jesus Emotionally or Devotionally? (John 21:15-19)
Do You Love Jesus Emotionally or Devotionally? (John 21:15-19)
Jesus asks Peter, “Do you love me?”
This is agape love. (unconditional)
Peter replies, “Lord, you know I love you!”
The Greek for love here is phileo (brotherly love)
Peter is basically telling the Lord that he “likes” him.
Just as I like Taco Bell, or Reese’s Cups, or sitting in my recliner after work.
These things make me excited, but eventually my needs are met and excitement wears off, and those things leave my mind.
This world has confused love with emotion. But in the Word of God, love is a whole different story.
When we leave this revival, will this week help us to serve Christ with emotion, or devotion?
The Communion(vs.15)
The Communion(vs.15)
They had just dined with Jesus (had fellowship).
We’ve dined and had fellowship with Christ this week. God has met every night and helped us with our needs.
Though we falter and fail, Christ is still faithful and wants fellowship with us!
1 John 1:1-4 “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.”
The Condition of Peter (vs.15)
The Condition of Peter (vs.15)
Christ had given Simon the surname Peter (Mark 3:16 “And Simon he surnamed Peter;” )
This shows two sides to the born-again believer.
Simon (flesh)
Peter (inward man)
Christ doesn’t call for Peter, He calls for Simon!
When Simon prevails over Peter, flesh overtakes the inward man.
Luke 5:1–8 (KJV 1900)
And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon’s, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship. Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.
Simon was going off emotion from toiling all night.
When he done what Jesus said, he realized how small and wrong he was.
In Luke 22, Peter was on a spiritual high and trust in himself. (The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.) Peter even cut off Malchus ear, but when emotions ran high, Peter’s devotion ran away. He stood around the fire before Calvary and denied the Lord three times.
Peter reverted back to his old fisherman ways (John 21:3).
Peter’s condition led others out of serving God (John 21:2-3).
The Comment of Peter (vs.16)
The Comment of Peter (vs.16)
Somehow, Peter thought he could fool the Lord into thinking he was fully devoted to Him.
God knows the sin were trying to hide.
Sin hinders our walk.
When Peter realized it was Jesus on the shore, he clothes himself and cast himself into the sea.
Sin brings shame (Adam and Eve)(nakedness)
Sin brings separation (cast himself)(Jonah and the whale)
John outrun Peter to the sepulchre in (John 20)
WE NEED TO STOP BEING FAKE AND MAKE THINGS RIGHT WITH GOD. STOP TRYING TO FOOL MEN AND FOLLOW GOD!
The Crucifixion of Peter (vs.18-19)
The Crucifixion of Peter (vs.18-19)
For us to be devoted to Christ, we must be crucified. (Not physically, but spiritually.)
Galatians 2:20 “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”
Luke 9:23 “And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”
Philippians 2:5-8 “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.”
Do you think Christ felt like leaving heaven?
Do you think Christ felt like living in a wicked world?
Do you think Christ felt like dying for our sins?
Do you think if felt good when Christ was getting scourged?
Do you think it felt good when Christ was hanging on the Cross?
Do you think it felt good to watch those that He loved mock Him, spit on Him, beat Him, crucify Him?
JESUS CHRIST WAS DEVOTED TO THE PLAN OF REDEMPTION THROUGH CALVARY, IRREGARDLESS OF FEELINGS. WHY WOULDN’T WE WANT TO BE DEVOTED TO HIM IRREGARDLESS OF OUR FEELINGS! UNCONDITIONAL LOVE SHOULD LEAD TO UNCONDITIONAL LABOR IN THE LORD!!!!
WHEN THE WORLD WAS AT ITS DARKEST, CHRIST WAS DEVOTED.
WHEN THE WORLD WAS NOT HOLY, CHRIST WAS NOT HESITANT.
WHEN THE WORLD WAS NOT LOVING, CHRIST WAS LOYAL.
WHEN THE WORLD WAS UNWANTING OF CHRIST, CHRIST WAS UNWAVERING.
WHEN THE WORLD ABHORRED CHRIST, CHRIST WAS IN ACTION.
WHEN THE WORLD WAS DISGUSTED, CHRIST WAS ON DUTY.
WHEN THE WORLD WAS FALTERING, CHRIST WAS FAITHFUL.
WHEN THE WORLD WAS LOATHING, CHRIST WAS LOVING.
WHEN THE WORLD WAS CONDEMNED, CHRIST WAS CONCERNED.
WHEN THE WORLD WAS REBUKING, CHRIST WAS REDEEMING.
WHEN THE WORLD WAS HOSTILE, CHRIST WAS HELPING.
CHRIST FELT THE WHOLE WEIGHT OF EVERY SIN OF MANKIND ON HIMSELF THAT DAY AND HE WAS FAITHFUL AND DEVOTED TO DO THE PLAN OF THE FATHER!!!!!!!!!
John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Romans 8:38-39 “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
You can’t crucify yourself. You’re going to have to yield yourself to someone and let them use you, that person is Christ. Yield yourselves as instruments of righteousness.
Romans 12:1-2 “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
Devotion - an attachment to someone or something that is manifested by constant attention, to yield your heart and affections to God.
