We encounter people all the time who find whatever they are doing or have been doing is not working. They complain of a hard and unfruitful life; a life that is unfulfilling and full of despair. Often times, the Christian will respond with, "If you tried those things and they did not work, why not try God?" Today, I want to explored this through the lens of Scripture to aid us in understanding, God is not something to be tried but someone who is needed.
What does Scripture say about the human heart?
What does Scripture say about the human heart?
Created to imitate God (Gen 1:26)
Knows good and evil (Gen 3:4-5; 22)
Every inclination of thought of the human heart is continually evil (Gen 6:5; 8:21; Ps 14:1-3)
Heart deceitful above all things (Jer 17:9)
No one is good except God (Mk 10:18)
No one is righteous (Ro 3:9-18)
Examples of people who did it on their own: 1) Adam and Eve, 2)Abram and Sarai, 3) Isaac, 4) Rebekah and Jacob; 5) Moses, and 6) David
How can human goodness still be considered evil?
If the human heart is evil, what is the cure?
If the human heart is evil, what is the cure?
God (Jer 17:10)
But how?
But how?
Giving of a new heart and spirit (Eze 36:26-27)
Through Jesus Christ (Ro 3:21-31; 5:6-8; Ro 10:5-13)
Created anew (Eph 2:1-10)
Example of one who tried everything and then found their solution in Jesus: Woman with issue of the blood (Mt 9:18-26; Mk 5:21-34; Lk 8:41-56)
Conclusion
Conclusion
Therefore, we do not try God but people need Jesus because without Jesus there one remains in rebellion against God following their own path that will lead to destruction. It is the one who try God who will enjoy Him but the one who tastes and see the LORD is good.
