LESSONS learned from the Lord:

I. The Practice of the Master’s Men. V.46

46 Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest.

Their conclusion. “greatest”

They do this 3 times:

Each time the way to the front of the line in Heaven is to be in the back of the line on earth.

Their contenders. “them”

When you reason without the Lord, you become the subject.

Matthew 16:7

And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have taken no bread.

When you reason without the Lord, it may be because you have never been converted.

Matthew 18:1–3

1 At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?

2 And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them,

3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

What Jesus saw.

And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart,

Jesus perceives the lost peoples intentions.

Luke 5:22

But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts?

Pharisees” are the context here

Jesus derailed them again in

Luke 7:39-40

39 Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.

40 And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Master, say on.

Jesus knows our goings on as well.

Psalm 139:2

Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.

Jesus is God! He has the same attributes found in

Jeremiah 17:10

I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

Jesus will set things in order.

Revelation 2:23

And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.

What Jesus did.

took a child, and set him by him,

The child is placed. “set him by him”

The child is planted. “by him”

The disciples still misunderstood later in

Matthew 19:13–15

13 Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them.

14 But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven. 15 And he laid his hands on them, and departed thence.

To get them to hear His Word.

We must listen.

And said unto them,

What is more important, what someone told you or what God said?

What is the final authority in your life, your feelings or the Bible?

What is your guide? His word (Psalm 119:105) or signs?

We must learn.

Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me:

Do you receive the brethren? Diotrephes didn’t. (3 John 9)

Do you receive the people that make professions of faith? “Well we’ll see” shows you are bitter and jaded stemming from an unforgiving spirit.

To get them to do His Word.

The greatness God has for you with His Bible.

and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me:

That conversion is to a person, not an organization through a ritual. It is the conversion to an inner kingdom (18:19) through Jesus Christ Himself.

The doctrinal application.

John 1:1–5, 14

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 The same was in the beginning with God.

3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

The practical application.

John 1:12

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

The goal God has for you with His Bible.

for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.
