Introduction:
What is your worldview? Before you answer, let me tell you how the dictionary defines worldview. Worldview is your philosophy of life or conception of the world.
Every person has a worldview. You can have a political worldview. If you have a political worldview, you believe politics is the answer. You can have a financial worldview. If you a financial worldview, you believe money is the answer. If you have a religious worldview, you believe religion is the answer. You can have a moral worldview. If you have a moral worldview, you believe morality is the answer, but none of those worldviews offer lasting solutions.
The only lasting solutions can be found through a Biblical worldview.
Just exactly, what is a Biblical worldview? Well, let me define it for you.
I. It is God who defines sin.
I. It is God who defines sin.
Having a Biblical worldview begins with the absolute fact that in the beginning God created. Genesis 1:1 tells us that because the basis for a Biblical worldview is that simple.
You must believe that God was before time, and in time, He created the heavens and earth. If you deny that absolute fact or doubt that absolute fact, you do not have a Biblical worldview, and you need to get saved so the Holy Spirit can reveal that truth to you.
Since God created and is the Creator, He has the authority to demand obedience. In it’s simplest definition, sin is disobedience to God. (Genesis 2:16-17)
Genesis 2:16-17 “And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree of the garden, but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for on the day you eat from it, you will certainly die.””
It is that simple. God has defined sin as disobedience. In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve were free to do as they desired except for one thing. God told them that they could not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. It was not necessary for Adam and Eve to know from good and evil. They were to just trust God that they did not know difference.
Since Adam and Eve disobeyed God, God had to define what sin was.
God defined sin in His Law as outlined in the 10 Commandments. (Exodus 20)
You are familiar. You shall not steal. You shall not kill. You shall not lie. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not have anything that you place before God. To fully understand sin, you must read the entire Bible because sin is defined throughout.
Let me give you some examples of sin that cause people to question God’s definition of sin.
A. Homosexuality (Leviticus 18:22)
A. Homosexuality (Leviticus 18:22)
Leviticus 18:22 “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.”
We live in an age that many people have the worldview that homosexuality is normal, that it is to be accepted. Nothing is normal that God calls an abomination.
People want to argue that people are born homosexuals. People are mis-gendered at birth. Dear friend, that is a lie. If a person is born a male, God intended for that person to be a male. Dear friend, people are not born homosexuals. People are born with a disobedient nature, a nature that will sin, and that sin “worsens” as people give in more to their disobedient nature.
It is not me defining homosexuality as an abomination. It is God, and if God is the Creator, He has the authority to do so.
B. Lack of Submission (Romans 13:1-2, Ephesians 5:22-23, Ephesians 6:5-9, 1 Samuel 15:23)
B. Lack of Submission (Romans 13:1-2, Ephesians 5:22-23, Ephesians 6:5-9, 1 Samuel 15:23)
Romans 13:1-2 “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.”
Ephesians 5:22-23 “Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior.”
Ephesians 6:5-9 “Bondservants (Employees), obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, with a sincere heart, as you would Christ, not by the way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man, knowing that whatever good anyone does, this he will receive back from the Lord, whether he is a bondservant or is free. Masters, do the same to them, and stop your threatening, knowing that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and that there is no partiality with him.”
1 Samuel 15:23 “For rebellion is as the sin of divination (witchcraft), and presumption is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has also rejected you from being king.””
We are commanded by God to be submissive. If we are not submissive, we are sinning. Victory in your Christian life depends on submission. Wives, if you are not submissive to your husband, you are sinning. Husbands, if you are not loving your wife as Christ loved the church, how can she be submissive to you?
C. Blasphemy (Matthew 12:31-32)
C. Blasphemy (Matthew 12:31-32)
Matthew 12:31-32 “Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.”
The one sin that I guess is the worst sin of all is blasphemy. Blasphemy is rejecting the call to salvation by the Holy Spirit. Every person here is a sinner, and at some point in your life or right now, the Holy Spirit has convicted you that you are a sinner, and if you reject the Holy Spirit, that sin cannot be forgiven.
Jesus said that you could speak evil of Him and that sin could be forgiven, but if you blaspheme the Holy Spirit, you will not be forgiven.
Blasphemy is the sin of rejecting the Holy Spirit as we have said. God might let you get by with it once, twice, three times, but eventually, that rejection will stop being forgiven, and you will die and go to hell.
The idea of rejection being the ultimate sin strikes many people today as being unfair. Many think that they can just get saved at any point in their lives. Technically, this is true. You can be saved at any time, at any time the Holy Spirit calls you.
But if you keep rejecting that call, there is no guarantee that call will keep coming.
II. It is God who judged sin.
II. It is God who judged sin.
Because God is holy, sin has to be judged. Since God is holy, sin separates man from Him. Why? (Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23)
Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”
Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Because you and I are sinners, we separated from God, and we deserve to die, and we will die.
Romans 6:23 says something interesting. It says that the wages of my sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life. Wait a minute! How is that possible? If I am going to die, how can I live forever with God?
For you to have eternal life with God, God had to judge your sins in a way that those sins could never be brought up again. In the Old Testament, goats, lambs, sheep, and other things were offered for sins, but none of those could give eternal life with God.
For you and I to have eternal life, God had to judge sin so that it would be taken care of forever. To do that, to take care of sin forever, God had to send His Son, Jesus Christ, to earth to die for my sins. Literally, Jesus was sent to this world to die in my place, as my substitute, so that I could live forever with God.
For Jesus to accomplish that, He had to be without sin. That brings up a problem because the Bible says this.
Romans 5:12 “Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—”
Man, we have a problem! Because Adam sinned, we all became sinners because we are all genetically tied to Adam. We all have Adam’s nature to sin. (Romans 5:12)
Because you and I are mankind, it would take a Man to redeem us, but that Man would also have to be God because only God can give eternal life. Do you want some good news? (Luke 1:37)
Luke 1:37 “For nothing will be impossible with God.””
Nothing with God is impossible. To judge sin so that you and I could have eternal life, God sent His Son Jesus to earth to be born of a virgin named Mary. He had no human father because if He had a human father, He would have been sinful.
This is an absolute if you want to have a Biblical worldview. Jesus Christ is not half God and half Man. Jesus Christ is completely God, and Jesus Christ is completely Man. He had to God to give eternal life, and He had to be Man to die for man.
God, however, did not judge sin simply by sending Jesus to earth. Jesus coming to earth could no more take care of my sin than I could jump over this church. Why? Hebrews 9:22
Hebrews 9:22 (ESV) Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.
By living and being born on earth, Jesus would not take care of our sins. It would take the purified blood of Jesus Christ to pay for sins if a person wants to have eternal life. For sins to be judged, Jesus Christ had to die. (John 3:16)
John 3:16 ““For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
Friend, it took the death of Jesus Christ on the cruel, cruel cross of Calvary to make it possible for you and I to have eternal life. The judgment of sin required every drop of His precious blood. (1 Peter 1:18-19)
1 Peter 1:18-19 “knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.”
And let me tell you it took every drop of that precious blood. God the Father spared no judgment in judging sin even though that judgment was being poured out on His Son, Jesus. (Romans 8:32)
It is an absolute if you want to have a Biblical worldview. It is God who defines sin, and it is God who judged sin one time at Calvary, and that judgment was poured out on His Son. You must accept that in order to have a Biblical worldview. God has done all He can for you. Your sins have been covered, but that is not the end of the story.
III. It is God who will judge the sinner.
III. It is God who will judge the sinner.
“Jimmy, you just said that God judged sin by judging Jesus Christ. If that is true, why is a sinner judged?”
This is the final hurdle to climb if you want to have a Biblical worldview. The world will tell you that it does not matter what you believe as long as you believe something. The world will tell you that all you have to do is good deeds to get to heaven. The world will tell you that it does not matter anyway because the grave is the final destination for everyone.
There is one detail I have left out. Did you know something miraculous happened three days after Jesus died? Do you know what that was? Jesus Christ was resurrected. (1 Corinthians 15:3-4)
1 Corinthians 15:3-4 “For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,”
The Bible clearly states in every book of the New Testament that Jesus Christ died for your sins, and that Jesus Christ was resurrected, and dear friend that was the separator.
Jesus Christ was not only born of a virgin. Jesus Christ not only lived a sinless life. Jesus Christ not only died a cruel death for your sins. Jesus Christ is alive today. Jesus Christ died as the judgement of sin, and He was brought back to life so that you can have eternal life, and the Bible calls that the blessed hope. (Titus 2:13)
Over 500 witness saw the resurrected Jesus. The Bible tells us that He is alive, and I know He is alive because He is living in me. Because Jesus Christ is alive, you can only have eternal life if you believe with all your heart, soul, and mind what I just said about Him. (Romans 10:9-10) (Colossians 2:13-15)
Romans 10:9-10 “because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.”
If you want to have eternal life, you must believe that Jesus Christ died for your sins and was raised from the dead. You do not have to speak in tongues, handle deadly serpents, or stand on your head. You must believe. The Bible explains perfectly what Jesus did? (Colossians 2:13-15)
Colossians 2:13-15 “And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.”
You had a debt charged to your name. It was a legal debt, but Jesus Christ cancelled your debt and all its lawful demands with His blood. He took your debt and nailed it to His cross, and when He came out of that grave, He sealed the deal. He could not have done it any other way. (John 14:6)
John 14:6 “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
Tragically, because that is the only way, if you reject the Way of Jesus, you will be judged, and you will be judged according to everything Jesus died to cover. (Revelation 20:11-12) Do you know what is written in those books that Jesus, God the Son, will judge you for? The things He died to cover.
Revelation 20:11-12 “Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done.”
Can I ask you a question? Do you have a Biblical worldview? Are saved from sin’s judgment? You cannot have a Biblical worldview if you reject Jesus. The Bible says in Romans 10:13 that whoever calls on the name of Jesus will be saved. All you have to do is believe and call on His name. When you call on His name, come forward and confess that decision before this church, and you will be on your way to having a Biblical world view.
