Intro

Tug of War
you are not alone, the lesson that the Hebrews forget so often

Recap of Genesis

we left off with the story of Joseph
he had faith in God and God was with him throughout his life despite all that happened to him
he was able to save his family and the lives of many more because he listened to God
the Israelites are in Egypt and growing

A New Pharaoh

Historians figure that around this time there was a civil war and a merging of a North and South kingdom of Egypt
the new leader and his compatriots would not have known or cared of the exploits of Joseph and the reason why his people were allowed to live and roam and work in Egypt
being a conquered people and being different than those whom they live in and around leads them to become enslaved
the king doesn’t want this large group of people siding with invaders from the East and they are considerable in number and useful for labor
scripture will list the time as being around 400 years after Joseph, a perfect number of generations
but this people remembers the God of their fathers and that he is one who keeps his word and so they cry out to him

A New Leader

Moses’ birth is relatively short for all the screen time it gets in veggie tales
cast away by his parents because the Pharaoh wanted all Hebrew boys killed
saved by his daughter and the mother gets to know that her son lives
feels drawn to protect his own people even though he was raised as an Egyptian
is led to flee despite his good intentions and lives with the sojourners and marries in
the people cry out and the God who appeared as fire to make a promise will appear as fire as he begins to fulfill it
Moses is a man with many questions for a God whom he likely seldom heard of
God is patient for the most part and lets Moses know the most important thing
the one who is will be with him

Application

the beginning of a theme that will continue until Jesus comes
Jesus coming is even reminiscent of this story in many ways
the people of Israel have been oppressed for roughly 400 years, a perfect amount of generations
God always hears them call out to him and even though they almost never deserve it, he is faithful and devoted to his creation
God hears and God sees and God keeps his promises just as he did in Genesis so he will do afterward and so he does today
