The Mission of John the Baptist V.19-28
JB one of 6 people in Gosp Jn who gave witness that J is G. Nathaniel(Jn 1:49), Peter(Jn. 6:69), blind man who was healed(Jn. 9:35-38), Martha(Jn. 11:27), and Thomas(Jn. 20:28). Jn begins recording 4 days of life of JB, J, and disciples. On first day(Jn. 1:19-24), committee of Jewish leaders interrogate JB. These men every right to investigate JB and ministry, since custodians guardians of faith. Ask JB several Q’s which JB clearly answered.
Q#1: “Who are you” logical question, Promised Messiah? Prophet Elijah to come before Messiah appeared(Mal. 4:5)? Greats crowds had gathered to hear JB, and many baptized. JB did no miracles, perhaps ppl though he promised Messiah. Answer: JB denied being Elijah, Messiah. JB had nothing to say about himself because he sent to talk about J. J is the Word, JB was “a voice” and you cannot see a voice. V.23 JB pointed back to Isaiah 40:1-3 prophecy, affirming he is fulfillment.
V.24 Jewish leaders know who JB so now Q#2: “Why are you baptizing?” JB got authority to baptize not from men, but heaven, because commissioned by God. Context: Jewish religious leaders in that day baptized Gentiles who wanted to adopt Jewish faith, but JB was baptizing Jews. V.26 JB explain his baptism water, but Messiah come baptize w/spiritual baptism. Again, JB made it clear he not establishing new religion or try exalt himself. He pointing ppl to Savior, Son of God(Jn. 1:34). Learn latter it was through baptism that J would be presented to ppl of Israel.
