4 Ways We Lead
4 Ways We Lead
Pastor Joel Johnson
We can learn skills of Leadership from the World, but we can see the heart of Leadership from Christ
Since the beginning of time God has been looking for people who he can trust
Leadership ultimately comes down to integrity and faithfulness
Can God trust you with what he’s asking you to do?
I hope the answer is yes
Let me ask you a question
Who is the wisest king who Ever lived? Don’t say Trump
Solomon
Does anyone know how his life ended up?
1 But King Solomon loved many foreign women, as well as the daughter of Pharaoh: women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites—2 from the nations of whom the Lord had said to the children of Israel, “You shall not intermarry with them, nor they with you. Surely they will turn away your hearts after their gods.” Solomon clung to these in love. 3 And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart. 4 For it was so, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned his heart after other gods; and his heart was not loyal to the Lord his God, as was the heart of his father David. 5 For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. 6 Solomon did evil in the sight of the Lord, and did not fully follow the Lord, as did his father David. 7 Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, on the hill that is east of Jerusalem, and for Molech the abomination of the people of Ammon. 8 And he did likewise for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and sacrificed to their gods.
9 So the Lord became angry with Solomon, because his heart had turned from the Lord God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice,
I want you to think about this:
there’s chapters of the Bible written about How great Men and woman were in the old testament
We will be looking at many examples of leadership in the Bible Old testament and New
What’s one thing that was missing from all the Old testament Heroes?
Romans 8:9–11 (NKJV)
9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. 10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
God has equipped us with His Spirit to be leaders:
In our homes
With our spouses
Our Kids
Our businesses
Our school
Communities
We’re called to be leaders
When I was growing up my mom and dad saw leadership potential in me
My dad would have me read John Maxwell books
Christian athletes books of leaders
I was a decently shy child growing up
I still take a while to open up around people
but I honestly would rather lead by example than by speaking about it
Today I was praying for this class and kind of unpacking my thoughts
I was thinking back to why I never wanted to be vocal about stuff
Or lead by talking to people or talking about leading
I remember on a baseball team I was on my senior Year of high school
Tad telling me that I never stepped up and lead like I was supposed to
I’m sitting there like, well I lead the team in batting average, I lead the team in slugging percentage, I lead the team in doubles, Home runs, I’m the best looking son of gun out here
I’m thinking back on it and saying why wasn’t more vocal about the direction of the team
Why wasn’t I more vocal about telling people to step up
Why wasn’t I more vocal about my Faith?
I heard the Holy Spirit say just today
You didn’t want accountability
Know this If you’re going to Be a leader you will be held accountable:
Not only by God but others around you
Leaders are held to a higher standard than other
The world has confused platforms for influence
People that should have no business telling us what to do are
The bad part is, that we listen
Gerald Brooks says “ When you become a leader, you lose the right to think about yourself”
The worlds style of leadership draws people to themselves, Christian leadership leads people to God
A lot of this class is going to teach you how to lead yourself
Craig Groshel says “Everyone wins when the leader gets better”
Tonight we’re going to talk about 4 ways we must lead(We might talk about teams if we have time):
As leaders we have to be more than one dimensional thinkers
Leadership takes discipline and commitment
We must alway keep in mind that God didn’t call us to be important but to be faithful
In order to be a successful leader:
We lead inwardly- create balance
In order to lead effectively we must create balance in our lives
For us Christians balance is vertical
It starts with our relationship with God
Nothing in our lives can come into order without God being first
15 However, the report went around concerning Him all the more; and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by Him of their infirmities.
16 So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed.
17 Now it happened on a certain day, as He was teaching, that there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by, who had come out of every town of Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present to heal them. 18 Then behold, men brought on a bed a man who was paralyzed, whom they sought to bring in and lay before Him. 19 And when they could not find how they might bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the housetop and let him down with his bed through the tiling into the midst before Jesus.
20 When He saw their faith, He said to him, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.”
21 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
22 But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, He answered and said to them, “Why are you reasoning in your hearts? 23 Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise up and walk’? 24 But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins”—He said to the man who was paralyzed, “I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.”
25 Immediately he rose up before them, took up what he had been lying on, and departed to his own house, glorifying God.
To lead others, we have to lead ourselves
You cannot take somewhere you’ve never been
It’s impossible to get other people to see your vision if you can’t paint the picture for them
18 Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint;
But happy is he who keeps the law.
How can you achieve goals without vision:
What is your vision for this year?
This month
This week
Today
Have a purpose for Today
Inward leadership is often times ignored because no one else sees it
I would venture to say that what you do when no one sees it, is probably the most important decisions you make
1 “To the angel of the church of Ephesus write,
‘These things says He who holds the seven stars in His right hand, who walks in the midst of the seven golden lampstands: 2 “I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you cannot bear those who are evil. And you have tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars; 3 and you have persevered and have patience, and have labored for My name’s sake and have not become weary. 4 Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. 5 Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent.
I used this scripture for a different reason on Sunday
and that you cannot bear those who are evil
It’s easy to hate things that are evil
Hitler? yeah Great guy
Nobody likes things that are evil and they tolerate it
It gets even harder when it comes to sin
We hate sin in other people
Sometimes its easier to tolerate sin around us or people we know
But do you tolerate sin in your own life?
Do you tolerate sin when it comes to entertainment?
We like to tell off people or judge people on sins they’re committing
Are we holding ourselves to an even higher standard when it comes to the little things we make excuses for?
Eventually what’s inside you comes out of you
Inward leadership identifies itself with
Focus, Faithfulness and Faith
1 Now it happened, when David and his men came to Ziklag, on the third day, that the Amalekites had invaded the South and Ziklag, attacked Ziklag and burned it with fire, 2 and had taken captive the women and those who were there, from small to great; they did not kill anyone, but carried them away and went their way. 3 So David and his men came to the city, and there it was, burned with fire; and their wives, their sons, and their daughters had been taken captive. 4 Then David and the people who were with him lifted up their voices and wept, until they had no more power to weep. 5 And David’s two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite, had been taken captive. 6 Now David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God.
7 Then David said to Abiathar the priest, Ahimelech’s son, “Please bring the ephod here to me.” And Abiathar brought the ephod to David. 8 So David inquired of the Lord, saying, “Shall I pursue this troop? Shall I overtake them?”
And He answered him, “Pursue, for you shall surely overtake them and without fail recover all.”
David has a problem!
The only way to lead inwardly is relying on God
Where do you go when you have problems?
When I have anger issues or anything issues
What is your go to for problem solving?
We have to daily spend time leading ourselves:
God word
Prayer
Listening to the Holy Spirit
Present 3 of the 5 questions as a group
Who have been successful leaders in your past?
What are qualities you can identify in those people?
What is the most attractive quality in Leaders you look up too?
Are you better at leading others or yourself?
What is the hardest area for you to lead yourself in?
2. Lead Laterally
We create credibility by serving
We lead people on the same level as us
Lead where we don’t have leverage
Are you willing to do what you’re asking other people to do?
24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 25 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. 26 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
He says this well before Matthew 27 when he takes us a literal cross and gives up his life
Come prepared!
Show up on time
I hate the idea that you get to a certain point that it’s ok to not value other peoples time
Leadership breaks down when people think that can’t count on you(Be a person someone can count on)
Leadership breaks down when people think they can’t talk to you (Listen to others)
When someone asks to meet with me
I’m on time
We lead by Serving:
We operate through servant-leadership. No one is above preforming a task. This church has been and will continue to be built by chair stackers.
1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.
2 And supper being ended, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray Him,
He was motivated by love
Jesus was able to wash the disciples feet cause he was confident in his leadership
Insecure people cling to titles, while true leaders wash feet
3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God,
He was confidence in his calling
We serve the call NOT THE GIFTINGS
How does it build the kingdom, how does it help others?
As a leader you will never outgrow the role of being a servant
Pick up trash, clean your own toilet!
There is no calling you can posses which will allow to skip out on the work
How can you be better at servant leadership?
What are small things you can serve your job, your church or your family better?
Do you have a harder time giving or following orders?
How can you be better at listening to others around you?
Or you someone others can count on? How do you know?
3. We lead upwardly
Leadership towards those who are above you
How do you honor those in authority or leadership above you
Who are you learning from
You should constantly be learning how to improve yourself
We all need to be under spiritual authority from God and another Person or People
Who is mentoring you?
Who is telling you no
Who is bringing correction in you life
This is probably the hardest relationship to have for me
Sometimes this looks like just having someone to get advice from
This relationship is hard cause I feel like its a take only relationship
Leadership without accountability becomes abusive
Humble yourself
6 But He gives more grace. Therefore He says:
“God resists the proud,
But gives grace to the humble.”
6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time,
Humble yourself or you will be humbled
Demonstrate Humility and a positive attitude
Humility involves actions:
respect
not saying everything you think
attitude dictates actions
SHUT UP AND LISTEN
Find someone in your life who can tell you no!
Not just your wife!
5 And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons:
“My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord,
Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him;
6 For whom the Lord loves He chastens,
And scourges every son whom He receives.”
7 If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? 8 But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. 9 Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness. 11 Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
Do you have a mentor in your life?
How do you take correction?
When people correct you do you think they have your best interest in mind?
What do you do to grow yourself mentally and spiritually?
Have you ever been humbled?
4. Lead Downwardly
Probably what most people think leadership is
Most people think of leadership is telling them what to do
The Bible talks about this type of leadership the least
Men spends the most time talking about this type of Leadership
It’s easier to talk about this type of leadership than it is to actually do it
This type of leadership is just telling people what to do- it’s developing people so they can do
When you delegate tasks, you create followers. When you delegate authority, you create leaders.
Most leaders are trying to figure out the right strategy. The best leaders are obsessed with empowering the right people.
Let people fail and learn from their mistakes
Leadership is really showing people how to think
Micromanaging is the lowest form of leadership
Teach people what is expected before inspecting
Getting mad at things I see that others don’t
We teach them how to see things
We show them How we want them done
Be a person People want to follow
Jesus spent his whole ministry showing people the heart of the Father
