Brief recap of v.1-6
The point of this was to prove
that if Paul has no confidence in the flesh
neither should we
Paul is going to continue from that thought
of rejecting the flesh, having no confidence in the flesh”
and instead having full confidence in Jesus
that He is enough
“sufficient”
Last time we were in Philippians we were encouraged
to rejoice in the Lord
because we need
no confidence in the flesh
because Jesus did it all!
so rejoice!
Paul ended that section with
the point that if anyone could be self righteous
(depending on the flesh to be right with God)
it was him
as verses 5-6 list out all his gains and efforts to self-righteousness
glance at it
His self righteousness is now trash.
he has counted his self righteousness as loss, for Christ
its a loss for the excellence of he knowledge of Jesus
now its counted as trash
v.10
v.10
10 that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death,
this that i may know
is connected to the other “that i may gain Christ” in verse 8
where we see that what that gain in Christ is:
To Know Him
2. The Power of His resurrection
3. The Fellowship of His sufferings.
Extra
Extra
when we gain Christ:
know Him, the power of His resurrection, sharing in His suffering,
conformed to His death. attain resurrection.
that is a goal a race
then later an upward call
which is the glory that comes from the resurrection
but the whole point of this section is found in verse 10
10 that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death,
hold on to this as this is the goal of the passage:
to know … (ginosko)
Christ in a closer way
we will come back to this
as the verses above will show us
how to know Christ
deeper and closer.
that is a “so that”
it is where I got the title for this morning.
“That I may know”
because that that is why our section is here.
everything before verse 10
in verses 7-9 is for this in verse 10:
Recent maybe good:
Recent maybe good:
What freedom found here!
36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.
Jesus did the work!
Thats why we praise Him
Thats why we thank Him
Thats why we serve Him with joy
so as the theme of Philippians goes:
rejoice in the Lord!
Jesus is all we need!
What a gain He is
Because of Jesus we are righteous
we are right with God
sons and daughters of God
we can truely know Jesus
Were connected to God
His Spirit works in our lives.
Now that we have zoomed into this passage
lets zoom out and look at this passage
this time in the NLT
because I think it brings it all together
7 I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. 8 Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ 9 and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith.
3 things that i may know:
Know Him
Know the power of His resurrection
Know the fellowship of His sufferings.
this greek word for know (ginosko - experience knowledge)
one thing to know steak is good,
its another taste it and know by expereincing it
So the goals of Paul in our section is to know by expereince:
to know by experience Christ, His resurrection sufferings
2 of the 3 sound great right?
we will get back to this more
the point here is that
the Paul is seeking know Christ deeper and closer,
in expereince.
1 Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus,
12 that you would walk worthy of God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.
14 to which He called you by our gospel, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
10 But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.
30 Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.
He does the work
we run toward it
we press toward it
maybe share this ilustration:
In thinking of this section II thought of someone who couldn't pay the price to go to Disneyland went to home depot and said i can make my own Disneyland. and he he starts laboring hard to build his own Disneyland. Then Walt Disney hearing about this visits the man and sees all the piles of wood, he barely has any construction going, maybe a little slide, and rickety wooden cart for a coaster. Walt then just says you dont need to do all this work, and decides to give him a life time pass to Disneyland.
How foolish would it be if the man then tried to bring his lumber piles, and
half finished cart to DisneyLand with him.
It is all trash.
Its insulting to Disney
to think your wooden box has any value at
Disney land
the cast members will just throw it in the trash
just thank Walt and enjoy.
because of Jesus I once was lost
but now I am found.
before you might have found me
doing my best but coming short
before you would have seen me in places I should be
because Jesus saved me
I am found in Jesus
where will you find me? In Christ
its not about me any more
that He is ours and we are His.
we are together.
this week that I may gain (v.7-9)
Next time were in Philippians that I may know (v.10)
We either are trying to stand on our own
or we cry out to Jesus “save me”
The Bible is very clear
trying to stand on your own leads to death
no slide
Romans 3:10 (NKJV)
10...“There is none righteous, no, not one...
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
In Jesus we receive a righteous we cannot ever earn.
that brings us to a relationship with God
way beyond what I could have gained by my own efforts!
gaining Christ is not a one-time achievement but a lifelong journey. It's about becoming more like Him, sharing His love with others, and living out His teachings in our daily lives. Let us embrace this challenge and press on toward the goal of knowing Christ more intimately, for in Him, we find the truest and most fulfilling treasure of all. May God bless you as you take up this challenge and seek to gain Christ in all you do."
