-doxology = expressions of praise to God that speak of his glory, honor, and power
28 Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength!
29 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before him! Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness;
-ending of most of the epistles in the new testament
11 whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
-serves as a transition: (Romans 11:36)
-saved by grace through faith, Jew and Gentile are one in Christ, pray that they are both strengthened in Christ as the church - this is all for the glory of God - then moves to how the gospel affects our relationships
-Paul’s point - all the glory in salvation, unifying of the church is for the glory of God
-3 reasons the glory goes to God alone:
God Alone is to be Praised
God Alone is to be Praised
-Now to Him
1 Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!
-Paul acknowledged that only God deserves all the praise
5 What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, as the Lord assigned to each.
-Think of the hymns we sing:
-How Great Thou Art
-Majesty, declare His majesty
-Now what led Paul to this praise? Well we need to look at what Paul had been praying for the Ephesians throughout the letter:
18 having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints,
19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might
16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being,
17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love,
18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth,
19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
Alistiar Begg - all doxology, all praise, begins with who and what God is.
-To Him, who is the Him?
-the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the God who has made Himself known to us, the God who has saved us by His grace, the God who has made both Jews and Gentiles one in Christ - this is the one in Whom Paul praised
-How do you view God?
-The way you see God determines the way you approach Him
-When you see God for who He is, then you understand the reason to praise Him, we who were dead in our trespasses and sins have been made alive together with Christ
-And the reason we praise God alone, because:
God Alone Empowers Us
God Alone Empowers Us
-Notice what Paul wrote: God is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think
-we cannot comprehend all that God has done for us in Christ
-This is not a reference to health and wealth, but it is an assurance of what Paul has already prayed for: that their hearts would be enlightened to the truth, that they would know the greatness of God and be strengthened
-Notice this power is at work within us
-we know the powerful God, who works in us and through us
-What is that power that is at work within us?
-The power that saved us, we were dead and made alive together with Christ
-The power that strengthens us helping us to be rooted in Christ, to grow unto maturity in Christ
16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being,
32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?
-celebrating 125 years because the all-powerful God has worked through his servants through the years and that same powerful God is at work within you
-How can you continue in your walk with Christ? How can this church continue to minister to this community for years to come until the Lord returns?
-by the power of God
-So we praise and give Him glory because He is at work among us
-We praise God alone because God alone empowers us and it results in:
God Alone is Glorified in the Church
God Alone is Glorified in the Church
-God’s glory is displayed in the church, what does this mean?
-It means that God has chosen to display His greatness through the church
-Think with me for a few moments:
-we, the church, proclaim the gospel, the good news of salvation - which is we were dead in our trespasses and God made us alive together with Christ we have been saved by grace through faith
-we, the church, bring glory to God by helping each other grow in Christ (Eph 3)
-we, the church, bring glory to God when we are united to worship Him, think about the context of this letter in chapter two Paul wrote about how there was no longer a dividing wall of hostility between the Jews and Gentiles, they are now one in Christ
-God is glorified in the church when we worship Him, forgive those who have wronged us, when we repent of sin
-And notice that God is glorified in the church through Christ our Lord throughout all generations
-God is glorified in this church not just now but in past generations and in the generations to come
-Kendra and I have had the most difficult year of our lives, we were in a church where the focus was on preferences and selfishness rather than the glory of God, many within the leadership of the church could care less about what the Bible teaches they just wanted power, why am I telling you this? We must be careful that we never make it about us, that it should always be about Jesus
Alistair Begg - It’s all about God. May God forgive us every time we think that it is actually about us.
-The question is:
-Are you living for the glory of God - have you surrendered to Jesus Christ as Savior - He is the only way
-Is it your desire as the church to glorify Christ above all else?
